These are the sedans that stir men’s souls.

Yeah, yeah, that’s not quite what Thomas Paine said in 1776. But if he’d been with us while we were putting this threesome through its paces, he might have been tempted to devote his literary talents to something other than revolutionary pamphleteering. Might even have signed up for a blitz course in German, to put a finer point on the subtleties of these four-door bullets.

The German language would certainly be appropriate because, when it comes to sedans capable of simultaneously indulging a driver’s hedonism and transporting the spirit, nobody does it better than the denizens of Deutschland. Is it the influence of the autobahn, which continues to be the world’s most demanding high-speed-driving development crucible? Or the handling demands of the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife, the fabled circuit used by German carmakers to test their cars, a track that magnifies any dynamic shortcoming a car may have.

like I said in the other thread, BMW said in advance this was the wrong tranny to have in the car and that they didn't want to make a stick. With the SMG the M5 would have tied the AMG for #1 in all the speed tests and been #1 alone in all the handling, lane change, and skidpad tests. Make mine a 2008 SMG model in four months that has the (much needed and much nicer) new interior, and viola, tops in the test again...

Do you really believe the stuff you are writing. first, the so call is-f thing will try to compete against the M3 RS4 and C63 and not these cars.

Second, are these lexus fans all really dumb or is this all one person who has created 20 accounts and is driving everyone Smart from this website.

Will, until recently all the same cars that are sold here as "Lexus" were sold in Japan as "Toyota". That JUST CHANGED and now they're sold as "Lexus" there but they did that to try and move the brand upscale. Thus far it's been a huge failure, sales have flopped. And that's in their home country. Also, when you put the car up on a lift, even the U.S. ones, and examine the car, you know what you'll find? The parts say "Toyota". So they are still Toyota's. Very nice ones, but still Toyota's.

Not true Will. The Audi A3 and the VW Golf share a wheelbase. The Audi Q7 and the VW Touareg and The Porsche Cayenne share like 20% of parts. BUT the Toyota Camry and the Lexus ES 350 share the same wheelbase, so do the Toyota Highlander and the RX 350/400h, so do the Toytota Land Cruiser and the Lexus LX 460.

The S6 beats the M5 once again. The IS-F is not a competitor to any car in this test. If it ever came out, the GS-F would be the competitor.

bulldogz-

#1. They've succeeded in every luxuy sector? I can name a few that they haven't.

SC430- utter failure. Nothing remarkable about this car, except maybe the price. It's cheap for a reason.

Current GS- besides the hybrid, it has a third-best interior, generally disliked style, and the V8 has always been underpowered. V6 used to be, but GS350 addresses that.

IS- no matter how good the new IS350 is (and I do like it), the sales have been a drop in the bucket compared to 3 Series, A4 and G35 sales.

You must also admit, in fifteen years, it's a lot easier to have mostly successful cars than to have a lot that fail.

I can just anticipate the failure of the IS-F. If Lexus magically masters the art of handling in this car, then you'll prove me wrong. But, honestly, you can't think that this car will suddenly be best-in-class and topple M3 and RS4.

Sure, we can't disprove it now, but you can't prove it, either.

Oh and, #2, if Merc/BMW/Audi were around for 200 years, then the car had to have been invented in 1807.

The first car, the Benz, was created in 1886. Horch, the predecessor to Audi, came in 1899. Audi came in 1910, and BMW followed in 1913.

The S6 has only been out for a short time and the R8 is due out in the summer, so releasing the RS6 too soon would steal some thunder away from those 2 cars. I would think early 2008 for the unveiling of the beast, to let the R8 first settle in.

I think Infiniti has more chance than what ever u call it GS-F, if Infiniti decided to build something like M brand or AMG, still Infiniti will also struggle for some time

I love them all.

S6: understated aggression; I saw the LED lights in person on an S6 in my area, and it's unbelievable

M5: contemporary aggression. Love the wheels, and they just did a great job with the bodykit

E63 AMG: traditional, elegant aggression. The usual fantastic AMG bodykit, combined with the E's class, make it a seductive offering.

I love all three. But based on design, I think I'd take the S6. Beautifully executed interior, as well as an agressive exterior make this my top choice.
Performance wise, all about the M5.

Will RS6 beat M5? We'll have to see.

i've said it before and i will say it again. I love my S6. it might not be as fast as the other two, but i was driving at 8000 feet on dirt and snow and tearing it up today. interior is awesome, and love the looks. waiting to add a R to the badge though.

As usual, the M5 loses due to the idrive and tranny. Anyway all of them are great cars no doubt. I prefer the M5 due to its looks and superb engine and superb handling. I love the looks of the S6 , but I dont think it competes with the M5 and E63 AMG. The RS6 is their true competitor. I dont like the style of the M-B, but the interior is quality and the engine is refinded. I would take any of these anyday.

Bringing Lexus to this discussion is totaly irrelevant and stupid. The IS-F will have a hard time and will get whopped by the german competition. I ll just have to wait and then be proven right.

I agree with you on the M5/S6 thing- it's not really meant to compete, and it's a little unfair that the magazines are saying it's Audi's "answer" to the M5. It isn't, even if it usually comes in second place or even first.

I do like the E-Class's style, though. I would take any of them!

The S6 actually defeats the MB E63 and M5 in the Motor Trend comparison, when it goes up online I will post it. The Audi S6 had the best braking and handling, and was only 1 tenth slower on the track than the BMW M5.

I got both C&D and MotorTrend on the same day. It's interesting reading contrary statements in reviewers opinions side by side. Just goes to show that reviews are about people just as much as cars. The person and car have to match each other which is why so many heated debates run in the car world.
