Upcoming Audi RS5 to receive the same engine found on the R8

Nice! But I am a bit confused, why offer the same engine in the R8 with less hp and fuel economy?

With a base kerb weight of 3 891 lbs (1 768 KG'S)on the S5 and 450 bhp (337 KW's), it should have a power to weight ratio of 190. The M3 has a P/W ratio of 187, so, without a serious diet, the RS5 will be marginally faster than the M3. One thing's for certain, it will be a lot more expensive.

This engine was in the RS4 first, then in the R8. What's cheap about a 420-450hp 4.2l V8? If that's too cheap for you they have a V10 R8 coming out....oh wait why am I trying to be reasonable..

David969 must not realize that the engine in the R8 is from the RS4. So how is dropping the SAME engine from a four door sedan of the last gen A4 in to the coupe verson of the new gen A4, cheapening the image of the R8. When it was originally found in the A4, A6, and A8? That logic is flawed.

This will come with Audi's Drive Select (ADS) and sport differential as standard so the weight and torque distribution will be vastly improved. Also, there will be the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox and a high-revving V8 with 450 horsepower.

My call is $75K for this thing considering the previous generation RS4 was already in the mid $60s and this will have the hugely expensive ADS and sport differential systems as standard.

Beautiful car. Hopefully they won't make that silly tilt-only sunroof standard, so someone with my build (tall, long-waisted) will be able to fit in it.

Sounds fishy. Audi has yet to prove they can pull well over 100hp/liter out of a N/A engine. Not to mention they seem to be going back to forced induction (09 S4).

henbmw, the Auid 4.2 liter in the RS4/R8 is rated at 420 HP, I think that puts them in the 100hp/liter club. Plus with a less restrictive exhaust and intake, you'll might see a 20-25 hp gain. So that is roughly 440 HP. So that engine could in theory "pull well over 100hp/liter"

I'm sure the RS5 will be a great car, but it's a little early to presume anything just because of a non-official horsepower figure. It's not just about power figures, the RS5 will be much heavier than an M3. A C63 AMG has more horsepower than the M3 or RS5 (and a LOT more torque) and while it's marginally quicker than an M3 in a straightline the M3 is still faster around a track. A CTS-V has a TON more horespower and torque than an M3 (or the RS5) and is only a few seconds quicker around the Nurburgring than the M3 is. Maybe the RS5 will outperform the M3, maybe it won't. This doesn't tell us anything other than that it will have a few more hp.

The mistake isn't putting the same V8 that was in the RS4 into the RS5, the mistake was putting that engine in the R8 in the first place. A nicely equipped R8 currently stickers at around 130K. Ridiculous. The less expensive '09 Carrera S will easily out perform the 09 V8 R8. And the upcoming V10 version of the R8 is priced in the 160K range or higher depending on equipment.

So what? An even less expensive GT-R or Z06 will also outperform both of those, and which one would most people rather own? The R8. Why? Because it's exclusive. Because it looks like a million bucks. Because it's not a Nissan or Chevy or 911 (which as great as they are there are a zillion of out there and they all look pretty much the same). There's more to cars than speed.
