VW Passat Undergos Investigation After Fires
Volkswagen AG's 2000 to 2003 Passat cars are being investigated by a U.S. safety agency after 19 reports of fires that may be caused by malfunctioning ignition coils.
The inquiry may affect about 346,000 gasoline-powered Passats with four- and six-cylinder engines, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said today on its Web site. The fires were in the engine compartment, the instrument-panel area and on the underside of the cars near the catalytic converter, the agency said. No injuries were reported.
NHTSA began a preliminary investigation, the first step in its safety-review process. About half of those initial inquiries result in a recall.

I wonder what all the German will have to say about this.
Put simply, German cars are not reliable.

Interestingly enough these are the EXACT same coils that were recalled quite a few years back.
It appears that many owners never took them back in for replacement? A good note to any owner, if the car is recalled, you probably need to take it in even if you are not experiencing any issues.

It's not the first car to catch fire. The door in my new 1972 Imperial that I sold to a friend when the first Middle-East oil crisis erupted caught fire due to an electrical short and another friend had a Pontiac Fiero that caught fire in the engine compartment.

"Lexus," it was an R8 V10 IN TESTING that overheated ON THE NÜRBURGRING. It wasn't just an R8 on a dealer lot that you can buy- and obviously, Audi would fix whatever malfunction occured before the car goes into production.

It doesn't matter if the car was in testing or not, it shouldn't happen.

I pick neither. There's no excuse for a car cathicng on fire just like that. It doesn't matter if it's 2 or 10 and it doesn't matter if it happened in the US or Japan or Europe. It should not happen.

The fact is you called me a liar and a retard (odd coming from you).

Isn't this old news? I'd assume they use the same ignition coils that caught fire in the Jettas.

Wow! and I thought the Big three or now the big two reliability was worst, what next? This is really going to hurt VW/Audi image and sales number for sure. And I don't care what the name of the brand, it will hurt your image for sure.

Funny that when it happened to toyota it didnt hurt their image.... proves that people who buy them, worship them.
Probably because toyota is the god of all cars and can automatically repair itself.

Audi A6 and Passat B5 have being made in China since 2000. A6 and Passat are frequently reported catch fire. These cars catch fire by rear ending others, normal urban driving and parking after driving. So insurance has single out fire coverage for additional cost.
