REPOST

Otherwise...

A lot of you don't know how stupendously good the Phaeton was. It was a masterpiece of European elegance and engineering, made into one super-sedan. It was an S-Class beater... but the badge was all wrong.

If any of you drove it and didn't pay attention to the badge, from the driver's seat, you'd probably think it WAS an S-Class!

I hear you - but the reality is that when you spend that much money - you do pay attention to the badge. I never heard anyone say that Phaeton was a bad car - just a case of horrible marketing.

The Phateon is a good car, I expect it to be, however there is too much competition any to many good choices, VW does not have the reputation in this class. Focusing on moving up market is what got Volkwagen in financial trouble before porsche saved them with their cash, this time They may not recover. Also with Bentley and Audi why does VW need to be in the luxury market. Winterhorn and Piech are great engineers but have poor business plans.

Winterkorn has nothing to do with this car.

I don't believe this rumor is true.

Hopefully, Dr. W will turn VWoA around. They need it. When your luxury brand brings in about 2/3 of your profit, there's something wrong.

This is a dumb financial move yes. It has nothing to do with platform sharing because the Phaeton loses money for them. It's just a "because we can do it" vehicle. That's fine if you are flush with cash but VW is only making a profit because of Audi. Audi can build an R8 because they are successful so they can afford a dream/toy car. VW can't even sell Jettas in the US well - why they are wasting more money with this does not make sense. I hope this story proves wrong.

I agree with you 100%, truecarman.

Some companies can afford to make "toys"... at the time, Piech figured VW could.

But he made a few too many toys at once.

The acquisition of Bentley, the development of the Phaeton, the creation of the Bugatti Veyron...

And the Phaeton is the only one that really wasn't worth it, what with the A8 covering that market.

That does not, however, mean it wasn't an amazing car.

Whoops, truecarlover.

I didn't read your entire name, so I just assumed "man" was at the end.

But at least we all know that the VW Phaeton is better than anything the big 3 made for sure.

If you're refering to the big 3 from Germany then you are wrong. IF you're talking about the big 3 from North America then yes you are very very correct. Chrysler, Lincoln, & Cadillac's quality is not up to the level as a VW Phaeton is. Hell it's not even up to par with Acura and Lexus from the Japan market and Audi, BMW, and Mercedes from Germany.

Also the Phaeton is a car built for a niche market. Someone who wants true understated luxury without even the flash of an Audi. I can't wait to see how the second time around for this car will be. I still doubt it will sell no matter how good of a build it is. No matter what the badge that is on that car still makes a difference.
