VW Releases The Full Monte On The New GTI
In 1976 the Mk I Golf GTI was launched as a low volume addition to the Golf range. Thirty two years, five generations and 1.7 million sales after that car established the breed, the sixth generation of the GTI has been unveiled in concept form ahead of its public debut next month at the Paris Motor Show. The core attributes of the original GTI – sharp dynamics, style and practicality – remain in the new GTI concept. Yet the new car uses the latest advances in drivetrain and chassis technology designed to enhance rather than detract from the purity of the driving experience.

The strut-type front and multi-link rear suspension architecture from the conventional Golf are adopted in modified form on the GTI. Specially tuned springs, dampers and anti-roll bars are joined, for the first time on the GTI, by the option of Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) which comprises adjustable pneumatic dampers. With three settings ranging from ‘comfort’ to ‘normal’ and ‘sport’ the ACC system also remaps the steering and throttle response to give a vehicle that can strike a balance between sharp dynamics and body control and comfort while driving in urban areas or on motorways.

For the first time the new GTI features an electronic limited slip differential (XDS) linked to a sophisticated ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) system in order to maximise traction and improve responses.

Powering the GTI concept is the 2.0-litre four cylinder TSI engine currently seen in the Sciroccodeveloping 210 PS (207hp) – an increase of 10 PS over the Mk V GTI. Despite this gain the new engine is both more efficient, returning 37.6 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 178 g/km of CO2 compared to 189 g/km for the outgoing car. 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes 7.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 148 mph making it the fastest standard production GTI yet produced.

A team of three designers are responsible for the new GTI concept: Walter de Silva (Director, Group Design), Klaus Bischoff (Director, Brand Design) and Marc Lichte (Director, Exterior Design). The new car bears clear visual links with the original. ‘We wanted a consistently clear GTI design, a car that has power, but style as well,’ commented Walter de Silva.

This is apparent in the red grille surround that echoes the original, along with the horizontal grille fins and elegant yet purposeful new headlights featuring individual lamp pods behind a translucent cover. In profile the side skirts of the Mk V Golf that extended the length of the sill are replaced by subtle wraparound versions that extend only partially along the lower edge of the vehicle. At the rear a set of GTI smoked rear light lenses are joined by a rear diffuser channelling air from beneath the vehicle that’s in turn framed by a pair of chrome tailpipes.

The distinctive 18-inch ‘telephone dial’ wheels from the Mk V GTI make a reappearance, albeit in subtly evolved form on the Mk VI GTI concept. Finished in milled silver with gloss black inserts, the new wheels are reminiscent of those first fitted to the GTI W12-650 concept.

Continuing the unique modifications to the GTI over the conventional Golf is a new interior. Drawing on the all-new interior of the Mk VI Golf the GTI features a flat-bottomed steering wheel finished in black leather with contrasting red stitching. A set of contoured sports seats finished in grey tartan cloth reminiscent of the Mk I and Mk V models are joined by unique instruments and gloss black dashboard and door trim inserts framed by silver highlights.

As with all Golf models the new GTI concept is fitted with a high level of standard equipment including seven airbags, a CD stereo, climate control and ESP.

The GTI concept is intended as a first step towards the Golf GTI which will start production in spring 2009. UK sales are expected to start in early summer, with prices and specifications announced closer to this date.

"undefeated king of hatchbacks.."

I guess you've never heard of the Mazdaspeed3. For the same kind of money you get a car with 60+ more hp, sharper steering, sharper handling, better breaking, no turbo lag, short throw shifter, Limited slip, better looking, more reliable, and it'll smoke the GTI like it wasn't even moving, hell, it'll outperform the R32.

Mazdaspeed3 = precision instrument -> scalpel
GTI = blunt instrument -> hockey stick

auto001.

I have not seen any serious motoring hack that has not sung the praises of the GTI as the best all rounder.

Top Gear track time for the R32 1.30.4 same as the Aston Martin DB7 GT and 1.4 seconds faster than Mazda RX8. (No test of the 3). But I doubt your 3 would get close.

auto001 "I guess you've never heard of the Mazdaspeed3"

Oh, I did. How could I not? The whole Internet is full of images and video clips of Mazdaspeed turbocharged engines that smoke like locomotives. Reliable??? The Mazdaspeed is going to set a record for biggest number of engine failures. I should not even mention the massive recall for engine mounts and for the dashboard falling in owner's lap while driving.

The car is a pile of s**t, "the fail" how is called in the enthusiast world. A failed attempt by Mazda to challenge the undefeated, I repeat undefeated king of hatchbacks, the GTI.

Mazdaspeed 3 has no turbo lag??? Ha, ha, ha. You just made yourself look like a fool. Mazdaspeed 3 suffers of severe turbo lag. The car has absolutely no power up to 3000 RPM while the GTI has maximum torque at 1800 RPM. Mazdaspeed 3 is ugly like sin, has severe turbo lag, the worst manual transmission, is noisy as hell when cruising at highway speeds, is a gas guzler it has more reliability problems than all the cars in that segment put together and worst of all is BORING to drive. And you compare that with the mighty GTI?

Go drive the car buddy before you embarass yourself on car forums.

from a review:

" Drive the aforementioned GTI or ST, and you feel like you're an integral part of the car.

Drive the Mazdaspeed 3, and you could just as well be having an out-of-body experience. You can see that it's you driving, but the involvement just isn't there. "

Star, I would pick the GTI too if I wanted a ride that was molasses slow with bouncy ride and handling... just give it to me for free :)

Does it bother you that much that a Mazada will beat the pants off the VW in every performance test? and don't talk reliability, never in the history of human existence has a bipedal utter the words "VW" and "reliable" in the same sentence, just check any of the reliability ratings, VW's are always near the bottom with the French, I'll bet a Tata Nano (aka India's People's Car) will be more reliable than the VW.

You claim to drive all these different cars all the time... I get it now...

The GTI has, without question, the best ride/handling balance you could possibly get in a hatchback. If you want more power sooo bad, tune it. The MS3 is great for straight-line power but other than that the GTI stomps it.

MKV grille would look good on this too.

Push button start would be sweht.

Your comment is based on ????

I am on my second GTI (2206, now 2008). I cannot believe people write this crap. Where do you get it from? show me one report or test of a Golf that complains of rattles and squeaks. I have not read one and from personal experience I can tell you that the GTI is as solid as my previous Audi's.

The MkV GTI has excellent word-of-mouth concerning its reliability. No reason the think the MkVI is going to be worse.
I love the wheels. The black inserts insure that you'll be able to go at least a week before brake dust makes them look horrible. And that steering wheel is one of the best in production cars, period.
Let's see... I had a MkII and a MkIV. Perhaps the time has come for an MkVI.

gooch,

don't know why but the GTI has very, very little brake dust. My wheels are 'clean' after a week of driving. My Passat 3.6 on the other hand......same as prvious Audis, black after a couple of days. Not sure what it is with the GTI brakes but I like them.

Have you owned a VW E36er? I wonder when I read comments on cars that don't match up to the cars. I have owned over 4 VWs over the years and I must say rattles and squeaks were never an issue in any one I ever owned. a 1993 Golf I had did have 2 issues, one was an immobilizer that failed to turn off and another was an air flow system issue. The other 3 (one is one of my 2 cars) have never had an issue, much less rattles or squeaks...so which one did you own that did that? Or is this just some hearsay?

Steve27t,

Both my GTIs dusted terribly until I replaced the pads with Repco (for the 1986) and Axxis (which is the same thing as Repco, for the 2001) MetalMaster pads. These pads were great on both cars.
You're right; I have not seen dust be a problem on the MkV GTIs I've seen. Maybe they changed the brake pad supplier.

WHAT!!!??? Are you talking about the Audi A4 2.0 (B7) with 200 hp that OUTPERFORMS the IS 250 (V6)? Or are you talking about UNDERPOWERED RS6 with 580 hp? You're probably not talking about Lexus NOT having anything in the 10 or 12 cylinder engines... It would be nice for you to do some research b4 opening your crap hole.

LexSucksLexSucks - 9/25/2008 3:45:27 PM
-4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
No, I’m talking about the A4 3.2 that was just released and already has the weakest engine in its class. 265hp when all the other cars that it competes against have 300.

Out performs an IS250? LOL!! That isn’t anything worth braging about. Any car could outperform an IS250.

And I’m talking about non "S" or "RS" model Audis. Besides the TT, the regular Audis have always been close to the bottom when it comes to power and performance. The A4 3.2 is no exception. It now staring to effect the "S" models. The new S4 has less power than the older S4 and is anywhere between 71-117 hp down on power.

steve27tsteve27t - 9/25/2008 4:30:50 PM
+4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Moron. get your facts straight. The 3.2 is an old engine in a new model. I believe it will soon get replaced. Some people are obsessed with HP, get real. In Europe most BMW, MERC and Audi models, the majority, get sold with 1.8 or 2.0 engines, diesel or petrol. I am taking A6, 5 series and E class !!! Why? because of the price of gas. Wake up, most people wont be able to afford a gas guzzling 300hp. Especially as the government is destroying the economy as we speak.

LexSucksLexSucks - 9/25/2008 7:57:08 PM
-2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
300hp doesn't have to be a gas guzzler (335/135 new S4). And what are they replacing the 3.2l engine with? enlighten me.

The economy? Most people can afford 300hp cars period.

"The new S4 has less power than the older S4 and is anywhere between 71-117 hp down on power."

I guess you don't understand something--POWER DOES NOT EQUAL SPEED. The new S4 is more than a half-second quicker from 0-60 than the old one. Instead of adding more power to the porky V8, they went with the smart route and used a more efficient engine. The car weighs less, goes faster and gets better MPG in the process.

Although it has less power than my car it is FAR more desirable.

Anybody with experience driving a range of cars knows that German HP gives you a lot more performance than Japanese HP.
I'm not sure why, but you can feel it and measure it. I think its the torque. In an Asian engine, you spend all your time stirring the shifter when you could be accelerating instead (if the car had any torque).
My son's 10-year-old Beetle TDI will consistently beat Civic SI's and Acura's off the lights ... and its rated at 90 HP.

Those that say the Cobalt, Mazdaspeed 3, and Astra VRX, are all better then the GTI, imo are wrong. They've laughed at the torque steer the VRX and the Mazdaspeed produce and shake their heads at the interior plastics of the Cobalt. Power isn't everything when the ride is like ass.

Car journalists put the MkV GTI against the Focus ST, Mazdaspeed 3 and VXR and who came out on top the GTI
Clarkson tested the VXR, Megane and Civic type R and still put the GTI on top.

Lets face it give credit when credit is due and don't plaster fanboi crap around.

Don't think I've ever seen a VW thread go this long. Cool.

De Silva has done a great job streamlining the Golf/GTI look, taking elements from the model before the current one, thinner-looking and more Germanic, IMO. This one is the best yet.

And it's great that we get Audi-design chops on VW. The chrome lip grille look wasn't the best idea. This new face is so subtle and based in VW-history, no one points it out, which is a good thing, I think.

"Ever hear of the Infiniti G35? It's a torque monster"

LOL...you cannot be serious. The G has absolutely no power under 5000 RPM. Torque monster...right...ha, ha, ha...
The IS350 has a little more grunt but is far from anything engineered in Germany. A Mercedes C300 feels a lot more powerful under 5000 RPM than both the Infiniti G35 and the Lexus IS350 while is down about 100 hp. Absolutely every single Japanese car I know had no power at low RPM...at least not compared with the German engineered cars.

So yes, ANY German car will feel a lot more powerful than a Japanese car when the horsepower rating is similar and not only. A 200 HP VW GTI feels a lot more powerful under 4000 RPM than a 330 HP Infiniti G37. The GTI feels definitely quicker around town. On paper the Japanese cars put good numbers but in reality they suffer badly when it comes to driveability.

What to say to someone who says the G35 has no power under 5000 RPM? And then they claim the GTI feels quicker and more powerful than the G35? How do you even address such nonsense? I just turned in a G35 lease a month ago and bought a GTI because I am in grad school and needed a smaller monthly payment. The G35 has gobs more torque than the GTI and is quicker, faster and superior in every way. The VQ engine in the G35 is known as one of the most torquey engines in existence with gobs of low end power. Every single car magazine and automobile media states the same exact thing. You are ignorant of the facts and just made yourself look damn foolish with you ridiculous assertion dumbass.
