What's the point of this vehicle for VW? They should invest in producing better quality and more reliable everyday cars, which is their bread and butter.

You beat me to the punch on this one. What in the heck are they thinking? They can't sale the current 07 Touaregs let alone the 08's. And now their adding more power to one of the worlds most unreliable automobiles. Funny thing, it usually wasn't the engine that had the problems in the Touareg.

Didn't VW just announce another recall for "exploding engines" or something? Ever wonder how reliable a VW would be if you took off the actual VW emblem. Maybe they've just got some really really bad ju-ju associated with it.

Actually, the Touareg is a pretty nice upscale/near-luxury SUV. Very few brands can compete with its interior and offered options, especially when looking at the V8 model. And don't even mention the V10 TDI...

Who needs this?

Performance SUVs are an oxymoron if you ask me. Nobody needs a gas guzzling 300+ horsepower V8 just to drive to work or bring the kids to school. I'm against overpowered SUVs in general. To me, the ideal SUV is a midsized truck with an economical 6-cylinder diesel engine under the hood. That's all you really need for everyday driving - and it can also be enjoyable.

A few years ago I was in Austria and we rented a Mercedes ML270 CDI. I'm not sure of the power output but it certainly wasn't slow. 0-60 in about 10 or so seconds. Perfectly adequate. Moreover, the fuel economy was amazing, especially on the highways at steady speed.

I have to agree. full-size performance SUVs don't make any sense to me while I'd keep high-revving performance and utility of a SUV seperate.

That's roughly 305HP and 550ft/lb of torque.

Yes, those are roughly the stats for the current V10 TDI.

The R50's numbers don't appear on the article.

Sorry dannyboy2! The R50 has not more Power! I think Volkswagen can`t sale the W12 Gas Guzzler. Now there is the V10 Diesel the High-End Car. This SUV is to heavy => 3 tons is not sporty. It`s only a SUV Truck. A sporty SAV is only the BMW 3.0SD with twinturbo power. 286PS and 2.2 tons is faster than the heavy VW. And for further time there comes the GM V8 4.5 litre Diesel with 350PS and 700ft/lb of torque. The weight is only 2.4 tons. The V8 engine is the all new Top Diesel for big SUV in USA. Please forget the VW Truck. The Audi Q7 V12 ist never coming! It`s a to heavy engine and the SUV is to heavy. It`s a 3,2 tons Truck not a SUV. Never a SAV.

Only VW could make an SUV with a 300 horsepower diesel V10 look like a chick car.

I LOVE it!! I really like the new VW styling, it looks very chique and upmarket. This R50 will be the spiritual successor to the W12 and W12 Sport.

It's good to hear that mighty V10 TDI is still alive!!

The old V10 did had some transmission problems but it should be solved by now considering they ditched the Aisin gearbox for the ZF.
