VW first company migrating over to DSG?
Volkswagen product chief Wolfgang Bernhard is placing a lot of faith in the VW Group's DSG gearboxes. DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox), described as two gearboxes in one (one clutch operates odd-numbered gears and reverse; the other, even gears) has been in place on VW models since 2003, and Bernhard sees it as the future transmission for the company's transverse-engined vehicles.

It's incredible how well the DSG works. It will make regular automatics obsolete.

The DSG in my GLI works just fine, very fun, so far, trouble free. Hope that they can make DSG in V8s.

Altough the DSG is a great transmission I stil think the Multitronic( CVT ) is the best tranimission. It is one continiously variable gear witch allows the engine to run at one, ideal, RPM rate. If you need power it immediately switches the RPM to the point of max power and stays there until you get your foot of the gas, continously getting the maximum out of the engine.
I drive a diesel A4 multitronic pretty often and I must say I love it.
The downside to the transmission is that it isn't suited for high torque engines.

I looked and saw the DSG issues you referred to, however I saw only 4 posts and the rest were always referring to the original post. So I think the jury may still be out regarding that issue. Still an issue is an issue, however I think 10% is a way over statement.

DSG (S tronic. not sure why the name change)is an awesome transmission. Audi will have a 7 speed one on the A5. This one will handle a lot more torque. BMW lovers are jealous as the DSG is much superior to the SMG.

DSG is my only hope as my wife resuses to drive a traditional manual shift car and I can't get a second parking spot in my Edmonton condo where we currently live.

DSG is indeed the future.
And may I point out that DSG is simply an improved version of SMG.

A lot of blogs and even main manufacturer weblogs fail to point out that the Bugatti Veyron has a Ricardo DSG and not a BorgWarner/VW/Audi DSG.

The difference between Ricardo and BorgWarner DSGs is easy to understand. Ricardo can support 1001 horses.

BorgWarner's DSG works fine with VW and Audi sedans - but most probably will not work well on even the Audi RS4 as is today - although I hope that it eventually becomes standard on the RS4's 400 plus horses.

I dream of a Porsche Carrera GT with a Ricardo/Bugatti Veyron DSG!!! Porsche is supposedly designing a 7 speed DSG in house for ALL their cars as standard.

Goodbye to the old, antiquated SMG. Stick shift using DSG is the future - like it or not, it will be the standard for 'good' cars. Anything without it would be either hyper-exotic or just golf carts.

DSG is badass, you get some steering wheel paddle shifters (you can get this option in any new VW Jetta or Golf) and you'll never want to drive a regular stick shift or automatic transmission ever again.

It's basically two gearboxes working simultaneously, one clutch engages while the other disengages (faster shifting). I.E. lets say you're accelerating in 3rd gear, 4th gear is already running and up to speed in the second gearbox waiting to be engaged.

The DSG in VWs includes Sport mode, Tiptronics, and Drive (or Normal mode).

I'll be sportin around with the paddle shit tiptronics or in Sport mode, and when the traffic gets heavier I just chill out and put it in Drive.

So far no problems with my DSG Transmission.
