VW picks Tennessee to build new Camry and Accord rival
Volkswagen confirmed today that its new U.S. plant will be constructed in the southern state of Tennessee. The new Chattanooga site in Tennessee beat out rival bids from Alabama and Michigan because of its cost and logistic advantages, and is expected to first start production as early as 2010.

The announcement came from Lower Saxony minister Christian Wulff, who also sits on the carmaker’s supervisory board.

I think this was one of the reasons VW looked in the US, more educated people to work in these factories.

Actually no it wasn't, VW even said themselves they needed a bit more qualified workers and engineers and the problems in the Puebla Mexico plant was the lack of educated and professionally trained people. Mexico had originally stated they would offer tech courses and such to the people, but never did.

As fo 0to60 I have many friends from TN and let me tell you, Vanderbilt is a great school as well as UTK with many great educational programs. My point was that here in the US, TN had agreed with VW to start specialized courses in teaching production courses, manufacturing courses, etc. The Mexican govt never went through with these original plans (I have an insider friend at VW and he told me this was an issue with some of the quality issues in Mexico...lack of trained workers and they were having to train them on the job,,, not such a good idea, but they had no choice to since they had already spent $100Ms into the plant there)

I wish VW all the best in their efforts. It's pretty sad, though, when someone wants only negative things to happen to people. Kind of reveals the headspace they're in.

From an article this one linked to:

"Automotive News is now reporting that the second sedan could be a cheaper replacement for the Passat, and would likely be developed primarily for the North American market. The sedan would be larger than the Passat so it could compete with the market-leading Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, but it will only cost about $20,000 – considerably less than the $25,000 Passat."

Looks like they're going to under-engineer a Passat to better compete on price with the Camry and Accord.

Well the Passat already has a myriad of features that add to the price and complexity that the buyer doesn't see.

"Hopefully high-speed stability isn't sacrificed."

Hopefully not like first generation Audi TT with their severe high-speed stability problems that caused fatal high-speed crashes .

Still not as bad as those Polish cars though, right?

Right , and not as bad as those east germany cars also ( trabant , wartburg ) . But not big progress , trabant and wartburg were safer at their top speeds - though their top speed was lower due to not sacrifice safety .

It seems the U.S. car buying public would just not buy a Passat in the $27K range in the numbers needed for VW. They drive very well but their reliability couldn't match Accord and Camry (as well as the Malibu or Fusion) coupled with the high cost was a losing proposition for VW.
I'm looking forward to the new Passat and think they made a wise decision about building them in Tennessee - a low cost, quality worker area.

I think price was more important than any reliability concerns. In that market price point and payment are the key factors.

anyone expecting to compete against camry and accord HAS TO GIVE reliability high consideration.

both those cars remain more trouble free at 8 years of age, than ANY rivals only 1/2 as old. and vw has always been LESS reliable than average to begin with.

vw can compete against the malibu and the koreans. they'll never get camcord owners to switch. ever.

What would make a VW-TN vehicle more appealing than a traditional German-made VW?

VW seems to think this will be a magic pill to the VW brand. Yes, it will probably help from a cost perspective, but will it really help VW increase its market share? Not sure.

Building cars in the US will allow VW to avoid the price increases that result from the out of whack exchange rate between the dollar and the Euro. The upshot of this is that the product will be just as well engineered and built, but will be more competitive on price.
