VW recalls nearly 800,000 cars
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Around 800,000 Volkswagen vehicles have been recalled Monday because of faulty brake lights, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said .

The 790,000 vehicles include Jettas, New Beetles, Golfs, GTIs and R32s.
The specific years and models affected are 1999-2005 Jetta sedans, 2001-2005 Jetta wagons, 1998-2007 New Beetle, 2003-2007 New Beetle Convertibles, 1999-2006 Golfs and GTIs and the 2004 R32, all in the United States.

The malfunctioning brake lights and brake light switches could fail to come on or remain stuck on.

This recall expands on one announced by Europe's No. 1 carmaker last year, when 362,000 Jettas and New Beetles were recalled due to the same defective part.

Volkswagen said that dealers will immediately be prepared to accept service appointments to perform the repair at no charge, but the notification process isn't scheduled to begin until April.

NHTSA did not say if any injuries had been reported linked to the defective brake lights.

I cant tell you how many times I see faulty VW taillights while out driving. Glad to see VW is taking care of this mess. Ive also seen it with Audi taillights.... maybe they will be recalled next.

Glad they're being proactive on this one. Wonder what Audi will do?

This is indicative of the problems of the German auto industry, their suppliers of electronics are sub-standard yet VW, Audi, BMW and MB keep buying from the same old suppliers. Why don't they switch to the same suppliers as Toyota and get greater reliability?

It's apparently for MK4 platform cars, not the new rabbit/jetta/GTI. Most of the bad brake light switches I change on Audis are made by Delphi, FWIW.

Mr. LexusFanatic,

What kind of ignorant bullshit are posting?

Is it me, or are all the Lexus "fans" on this site complete idiots? Seriously. I have not spotted a single Lexus fan who is open minded and respective of other brands.

Toyota builds a better car no doubt. They're just not near as fun to drive. Besides, I've heard numerous accts. of bad cust. service from Toyota too. I've owned a Tundra and drivin a RAV4 now, so I can speak to that for sure.

mitchatlexusofmarin,

Take a look at the posts of your fellow Toyota / Lexus douchebags and then tell me who is being a jerk?

If you seriously believe what LexusFanatic is typing, then you need help, and fast. I can smell a troll from miles away and he is clearly one - like many of the Lexus fanboys on this site.

You can call me a jerk all you like, I don't care. I stand by my principles. This kid is douche.

Ummm 43LE, this spans nearly 7+ years of sales not just 1 year so don't quote inaccurate figures with your percentages. This whole article is being blown out of proportion. At least they are stepping up to the plate and fixing the issue.

Idiots are foolish people. I don't see the Lexus fans on this site as foolish people. They made a great purchase in there Lexus. They probably have different needs and desires out of their car than I, so they purchased what worked out great for them. I do notice a trend of people unable to see past there brand loyalty with a clear mind.

LexusFanatic: You mention that Toyota does a recall because they 'care' about their customers. Who in business doesn't care about their customers. Perpetuating this concept that Toyota is beyond reproach for some inherent reason is asinine. Toyota should be looked at as critically as every manufacturer. They are in business to make money, so is VW. If we were to air out the dirt laundry I am sure we will see there are good people and bad people working at every company.

See beyond your fanaticism, and fundamentalist like ideals about Toyota and see they are in business just like everyone else.. Sometimes in business decisions are made which not everyone agrees upon, and later on company's pay. Toyota has ghosts too.

Josh

p.s. All the above doesn't mean I don't see an overall rocky past 10 years in VW quality. Like Mercedes I think they need to admit some weak points, move on, and improve. Thats my opinion from my self proclaimed limited perspective of the situation.

The recall battle could be fought back and forth. Toyota recalled 160k Prius's (btw compare how many Prius's sold compared to Jetta's)

The important part is they did the recall and are making things right. Good thing it wasn't something more serious, like complete loss of brake lights.

They make shady cars, so what. Look at GM, Ford and Chrysler. The thing about VW, is that people still buy their product because of the awesome marketing and good performing vehicles. Most people don't care about recalls, everybody's got 'em. Some more than other. But I can guarantee the guy buying the R32 is having more fun than the guy in the Corolla S or Civic Si.

You have to compare apples to apples. The Corola S and Civic Si are not in the same price range or performance category as the R32. Compare the r32 to the EVO and STi.

Well, if they couldn't get the "harder stuff" right, don't you think there would be a recall involving that "stuff"? I agree that it is simple and easy to fix, but there's no evidence that they're getting other parts wrong.

I'd compare the GTI to the EVO/STi, not the R32. R32 is more the "GT" of the Golf lineup, while GTI is more youthful. You can easily chip the 2.0T to STi levels of horsepower, all while keeping the end price under $30K.

Too bad it's FWD. Fun with 200hp... but it would get scary after 250.

And, you don't really need to chip the GTI/A3's engine. It's a fantastic powerplant with a fantastic gearbox (DSG), and those two don't need 300hp to perform excellently.

S4 don't compare the EVO/STI with the GTI, they are not even close in terms of performance. Even the R32, which called a "GT", is not close to the EVO/STI. This is simply a silly comparison. I mean the GTI or R32 may be great cars, but not to be compared with the Mitsu or Subie.

So BMW and VW don't have the handling of the Mazda Speed 3?

I think you need a new baseline for your handling judgment. Don't get me wrong Mazda's lineup right now is stellar, and one of the best handling cars of all time has to be the MX5(I owned one :)

But as good as Mazda is, the e90(latest 3 series) has some of the sharpest reflexes of any sedan available. Don't believe me read the reviews. I have driven most new cars in the segment and I agree with those reviews.
VW which has always obviously had a very German approach to handling, has abandoned some of its earlier attributes in some of its new cars. Not the GTi, and R32 though. They are classic VW... just a tad heavier, and a whole lot safer :)

You are going to get called out a lot if you post things which people who have been around the block know to be BS.

Josh

p.s. No way a GTI ever will compare to the EVO/STi cars. The R32 yes, GTI no. The GTI compares better to the Speed 3, Si, and WRX.

I work for a dealership parts department, and you all are just looking a numbers someone posted. Do you take into account that a recall is not always a part or parts that need to be replaced for saftey reasons. Most are module flashes for performance issues or just a basic inspection for precationary reasons. There are even recalls due to a few pages missing from the owners manuals, how many people actually read their owners manual??? My point is you are over reacting about a number. It was stated previously, all manufacturers have recalls, none are perfect and none will be. No manufacturer is 100% reliable or will ever be. Yeah you have a Toyota that lasts 200K+ miles, ever stop to consider that there are Fords, Chevys, and Dodges out there that last just as long. They just didn't feel the need to brag about it. One last thing, fifty years from now do you really think someone will be cruisin there 2001 Toyota to the car show for the nastalgia or design...I think not, most imports are so bland in appearance they all blend together. They do not have the heritage of the big three, some how that is convienently forgotten.

How did this discussion turn from recalls to heritage? No on questions the big three's heritage in the US. I do question the idea that because we know, and understand the big three's heritage that means that it is the only one we should care about?

Asian and European car companies have heritage as well. It is not our heritage but it is still unique, and interesting.

When American was creating nostalgia, everyone else was engineering nostalgia. Lets be nostalgic about Fuel Injection, ABS, AirBags, and high revving, high compression engines. Things that were brought to us by mostly european and japanese companies.

Josh

p.s. In fifty years they won't be driving there 2001 Camry to a car show, but they might be driving there 2008 M3, or 1997 Supra, or 2004 STi. There are plenty of classics being made daily, and it was only the past few years that the Big Three started making classics again. Or should I say remaking previous classics, unable to create original classics anymore.
