I hooked up my accelerator to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.

Video: 2009 Toyota Corolla vs 2008 Honda Civic and Mazda3
If the sales figures in May are any evidence that consumers are shifting to smaller cars, we are about to see a huge change in buying behavior when it comes to the automotive industry. The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla both came in on top selling a total of 53,299 and 52,826 respectively. Both, along with the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord, took the number one spot for the top-selling vehicles from the Ford F-Series.
Now if you’re in the market like many other consumers for a small car and are confused about which one to take home, check out this latest consumer comparison test from Edmunds comparing the all new 2009 Toyota Corolla, 2008 Honda Civic and the Mazda3. Each car is priced within a $500 range of each other.
Refresher:
2009 Toyota Corolla: Two engine variants including a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine that produces 132 horsepower and a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower.
2008 Honda Civic: 1.8L 4-cylinder engine producing 140-hp.
2008 Mazda3: Two engine options including 2.0L 4-cylinder engine producing 148-hp and 2.3 liter engine producing 156-hp.

For 2007 the Civic was no.1 for safety, handling, and gas mielage.Has that changed for 2008? I doubt it, although the corola looks way better but I think it would be safe to say it is exactly the same exept it looks way better, why wouldn't they improve the safety or the engine sludge for the corola? I concidered the Mazda 3 but I didn't like the crash test results for rear seat passengers (your children).Honda is still no 1!

New Mazda 3 is coming out end of this year probably. The current 3 is a nice car, especially in hatch form, and the Mazdaspeed 3 is crazy fast. I'd take one over a Civic anyday. The new Corolla is a nice update, but nothing crazy here. They didn't do enough to it this time to impress me. I like my 05 Matrix which is based on the Corolla platform with the 1.8. Nice engine. The Civic is not my cup of tea, not really into the look and styling. It is nice, but I am just not fond of it for some reason.
I almost bought the 3 but went with the Matrix because Mazda didn't offer an AWD variant.

Interesting video, but I only counted 5 participants. In my opinion not really enough to gauge user opinion on these cars.
I'd be interested in a bigger study with equivalent trim models for comparison (i.e. not just Corolla 1.8, but 2.4 as well. Not just Mazda 3 2.3, but 2.0 as well... just to level the playing field).
Of the three though, my preference is the Mazda.

I really like the exterior of the mazda3s but the dash is a total turn off. The civic I love both inside and out. I can't see how anyone who is honest with themselves could say that the placement of the speedometer in the civic isn't an improvement.

The Honda Civic Looks, Drives and Performs Exactly As A Modern Compact Sedan Should, With The Mazda3 Following Closely Behind...
The 2009 Corolla, On The Other Hand, Is Little More Than A Mild Re-Style Of The Previously 'Dull-As-Dirt Vehicle' Being Pas-Off As As Something Entirely New.
This 2009 Model Does Absolutely Nothing To Push The Category Forward In Any Meaningful Way, And I Still Can't Believe That After All The Development Time That Went Into This Vehicle (Including A Back To The Drawing-Board After The Release Of The Current Civic), That This Is The Very Best Toyota Could Do - A Major Disappointment In Every Way.

the mazda is the top of my list, the civic is a good daily commuter, same with corolla but simply just a basic appliance.
