Video: Hyundai takes shots at Mercedes and BMW in Super Bowl ads
You’re probably as pumped as us to watch the Super Bowl this Sunday and if you love cars like we do than you’re probably excited about the car commercials that will air during the game. Besides Audi’s Godfather themed commercial look out for Hyundai’s two 30-second spots during the third and fourth quarter.
This will be Hyundai’s first Super Bowl commercial since 1989 since they had nothing to talk about for the last 19 years. Now Hyundai is pumped and excited about their brand new rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan, the Hyundai Genesis.
The ads will take a shot at BMW and Mercedes-Benz with comments like ‘More spacious than a BMW 7-Series. Priced like a 3-Series.’

I'm not even going to bother with this one. The Genesis has caused so many flame wars everyone is sick of it. The same arguments 25 times in one week gets old.

I can see why Hyundai is mentioning BMW and Benz in this add. It is not because they want customers who are choosing between 7-series and an S-Class to give up both and come running to buy a Genesis.
They are marketing this car directly towards conservative middle class people who are looking to move up from something like a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry into something with a bit "more".
Hyundai puts on the air of "Lexusish" products when they know full well they are not yet there. They are trying to claw their way up the "automotive image" ladder and they are doing it, in my opinion, in the best possible way:
They are putting a huge amount of effort into building products that improve tremendously with each passing generation.
Let's not forget that only 2 decades ago Hyundai blessed us with such shocking devices as the Hyundai Pony. And now they are introducing a sub 40k full size luxury car with competitive styling, very solid engine choices, and an unmatched warranty.
Honestly, one would be hard pressed to think of ANY company that has come that far and improved that much in such a short period of time, let alone a car manufacturer.
I admit that Hyundai has a ways to go to catch the established luxury brands, but I give props where it is due. I think Hyundai is doing an excellent job of offering ever improving products with outstanding warranty at unbeatable prices.
When the Genesis is released I hope it does very well. It's not because I don't like the established brands, or because I'm some sort of fanboy. It is because as an engineer in the automotive industry, I like to see good products, solid engineering, and continuous improvement and that is something that Hyundai is doing very well.

Lexus is not on the same level as BMW or Mercedes. They're a class above them as is generally accepted and stated by most motoring journalists. Hyundai is doing the right thing attacking their true competitors.

Oh please. Lexus is NOT a class above BMW and Mercedes.
These two brands are Tier-1. BMW and Mercedes both create designs that heavily influence the auto industry. Why else have Toy/Lex ripped off many of their design cues?
Also, BMW and Mercedes both have higher reputations performance wise. Look at their M and AMG divisions.
Your point can be proved further invalid:
Hyundai took a shot at Lexus with their Veracruz against the RX. So using your logic, I guess Hyundai did a right thing attacking their true competitor.

"Don't you mean BMWs take design cues from the auto industry? Like how the tail lights on the 135i came from a 1994 Hyundai Elantra, or how the 335i tail lights came from an 1999 Infiniti G20?? Or how the current 7 series' infamous bangled butt first appeared on the 1995 Dodge Stratus???"
Proof please. Otherwise, these are libelous statements. Bahahahahahaha!!!

"Lexus is not on the same level as BMW or Mercedes. They're a class above them as is generally accepted and stated by most motoring journalists."
You're right, that's why my X5 feels so much better than the two RXs we had, and that's why I paid $20K more for it than I did for the Lexus.

Are you retarded??? Lexus a class ABOVE BMW and Mercedes? What are you smoking? No automotive journalist would ever say or agree to such a stupid statement. Lexus just got into the $100k sedan game. Mercedes has $200k cars and BMW makes the Rolls Royce. Get a clue. stop being a Lexus dumbass. Lexus makes nice cars, but you're going too far.

People buying this Hyundai don't consider a Lexus which is a class above BMW or Benz. Didn't you hear what Clarkson said?

Please give me a source or link to when Clarkson stated that "Lexus is a class above BMW or Benz"
Thats right you can't find any. Stop making up BS.
Clarkson hates Lexus, thats a known fact.
With the latest review of the IS-F, he stated that the IS-F is the only Lexus that did not completely bore him, however, he did not say that it was better than the M3 or the C63.

taking shots or not but anyway Genesis is good car from Hyundai. It really should be appreciated. It's not Hyundai's fault that Advirtisments nowadys have to attack another brand. So they are just doing what is the trend/ fashion of advirtisement nowadys.
Again Genesis is a really good car and if it's really going to be 30K then that's a steal.

A steal? No, a compromise yes.
A steal would be a BMW or Mercedes 30K off. I think you have your definition of "a steal" referring to (an incredibly good bargain)a little mixed up. Dont forget its a Hyundai. They still have to walk the walk not talk the talk.

autoeng,
Acura was all that before they decided to raise their prices. Hyundai is barking up the wrong tree by mentioning BMW/MB since people will be turned off once they see its a Hyundai.
It would be more intelligent for Hyundai to just say "Redefining luxury".
Most Camry\Accord buyers don't load up their cars with all the options, so why would they pony up between $5-10K for a car that comes with a bunch of stuff they can get on a Toyota/Accord for the same money?

Audi is already saying "redefining luxury."
Except they can back it up...
The Genesis is a great car, and I think this ad fits it well.

BTW, Acura didn't "decide" to raise its prices.
That's what happens with inflation.
It's also because as Honda moves further upmarket, Acura needs to differentiate itself. Their cars are still good values in the eyes of consumers.

I liked the ad. When my wife saw it during the game she was shocked and couldn't believe that was a Hyundai. And I think that is the response that Hyundai is looking for. They're trying to shake things up and start up these arguments because it only gets them noticed even more. But this time they have a solid product to back them up. But more power to Hyundai and good luck. In this business competition is always good.
