Well here it is; in part two of CarMagazine’s test the Nissan GT-R takes the track with a very sleek cameo appearance made by the 2008 BMW M3 Coupe.

Do you even know what the word 'obsolete' means?

The GT-R is a great car and so is the Porsche. Saying anything else would make that person sound like a fool.

Oh yeah.. Obsolete means - No longer in use, Or no longer useful.

Well done Nissan! In the real world, the Porsche Turbo was the greatest of all supercars (at least the ones that middle class people could conceivably afford). Now, the GT-R has not only - at the minimum - just edged out the Turbo, it has done so at a price point that opens up sub 4 second 0-100 km/h performance to a whole new audience.

It's an awesome achievement.

Yes and the bottom line is the GTR is much easier to drive at the limit then the Turbo. That's probably the main reason why it can be driven faster. Porsche insists on that rear engine layout. Can you imagine if they developed the Cayman's chassis to handle turbo power and awd. My guess is that it would take back the crown from the GTR without too much trouble. It's really a shame that Porsche has comitted to protecting the 911's performance at all costs. The Cayman has better balance.

Many people still won't acknowledge that Nissan had several years to pull the 911 apart and benchmark their car against the 911. Give credit to where credit is due...the 911 came first...the Nissan is a result of persuing the performance benchmarks of the 911. I'm sure that Porsche can and will up the ante with the next revision of the 911...then what...the GTR will have to play catch up again. If Nissan was such a leader in the performance car arena...they would have had Porsche by the balls since day 1. The GT-R in my opinion is nothing more than a great comeback...to which I'm sure Porsche will have a response.

That's why companies themselves benchmark the market's leader. In this case, the benchmark was the 911. Nissan aimed and hit the bull's eye. In the marketing world, the GT-R would now be the benchmark in that market. Now, it is Porsche's job to reclaim its benchmark status by beating the GT-R with a meaner 911.

the Skyline GTR has beaten the 911 in the past. older versions set records at nurgurg ring. I knew this GTR would repeat its history and I am a German car fan but truth is truth and I seperate that from my favorite cars and admit truth.

@NeedForSpeed, Since you cant do your own research here it is: On 1993 the Nissan Skyline GTR-R33, became the record holder on the Nurburgring, pretty much beating everyone including Porsche. Anything else?

A very sad and unhappy day for Porsche, and for the years to come. Did Porsche and other Germany car facotries lose their mojo? Look out, Germans!

Hopefully, Porsche will do something about this.

24 Hours of Le Mans

"Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in the history of Le Mans, winning its class more than 50 percent of the time with a combination of LMP1 prototypes and production-based GT2 class racer cars.

"Porsche has scored 16 overall wins at Le Mans, achieved by famous race drivers like Jacky Ickx, Jürgen Barth, Klaus Ludwig, Henri Pescarolo, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Alexander Wurz, Tom Kristensen, Michele Alboreto, Allan McNish and Laurent Aiello for both customer and works teams. Additionally, Porsche works drivers have earned dozens of class victories in GT2 class, most recently Marc Lieb and Mike Rockenfeller together with privateer Leo Hindery in 2005, the 7th consecutive class victory for the Porsche GT3 R/RS/RSR family.

"In 2007 the new Porsche GT3 RSR (Type 997) continued that success. With a six-lap advantage over the second-placed Ferrari, the French customer team IMSA Performance won the GT2 class."

American Le Mans Series:

"In the last nine seasons (1999 - 2007) Porsche has won the manufacturer's title nine times, Porsche customer teams have won seven times, and the driver's title went to Porsche drivers on nine occasions."

I'd be willing to bet a lot that Nissan will not race the GT-R in any major international races where they could come up against Porsche. And few outside of Japan know about any Japan GT races and their under funded Porsche privateer teams.

doubt it, so far every test on the GT-R has proven to best the 911. Whether it be Top gear, Edmundsinsideline, those japanese videos (although they seem to exaggerate)and even carmagazine, everybody who driven the gtr has said the car felt or went faster then the 911. But then again we should expect so, they've been only engineering it for the past 5 years, so its expected it'll do better then the 911 for the time being. Now its porsche turn, the v spec is comin in a year.

True, but even the best gotta retire sometime and let the new step in which is where the R8 and GTR come in. I doubt porsche is gonna sleep into the night, plus the addition of these 2 new rivals is gonna make them work harder to build better cars. So all the porsche fans out there cool down and keep your panties on its not the end of the world

Ideal weight distribution for a racing car is more like 45/55 front/rear. The weight transfer helps increase traction during acceleration and equalizes weight distribution under hard braking.

"However, it is not only vertical centre of gravity position designers are interested in - it must be on the centerline of the car, and its position between the front and rear wheels will determine how the braking and accelerative forces is spread between the two sets of wheels. ***It is good to have the static weight distribution such that the centre of gravity is positioned closer to the rear of the car, as this puts more weight on the rear wheels and provides more traction.***"

http://atlasf1.autosport.com/99/dec15/gray.html

"The 612's ultra-long wheelbase makes it look a bit awkward from some angles, despite the 'Ingrid scallop' used to disguise it, but Ferrari's engineers deemed it vital to approach the target front/rear weight distribution of 45/55. (The final distribution ended up 46/54.) That target was established after extensive testing on the effect of weight distribution on acceleration, handling, and braking, the graphic results of which are illustrated on this page."

So you're saying that Ferrari has won all those Le Mans and F1 races and Nissan hasn't because Ferraris don't handle as well as Nissans?

0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Why do you want to use the Nurburgring lap times as a measure of which car is best when lapping the Nurburgring is basically an amateur motorsport event without factory teams or formal factory backing or official oversight? When manufacturers go racing - real, official, racing with factory teams and huge budgets like in F1 or at Le Mans Ferrari has been WORLD CHAMPION more than most every other manufacturer. Comparing Nurburgring lap times with real racing results is like claiming that the guy who can lift the most weight at a local gym is the official world record holder. I have more respect for manufacturers like Toyota who at least go to Le Mans and F1 to compete than I do for a Nissan that doesn’t get involved with real motorsports.

Ferrari has better things to do than to piss around with the amateurs at the Nürburgring. They race in Formula One, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the American Le Mans series where they were the GT2 class winners last year. Btw, according to Wikipedia there are eleven cars under "Miscellaneous lap times of road cars" that have lapped the Nürburgring faster than the GT-R and there is no mention of a GT-R under any of the official lap times.
