Volkswagen Announces Jetta TDI Pricing
Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced pricing for their eagerly anticipated Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen starting at $21,990 and $23,590, respectively. Fuel efficiency, performance and convenience all come standard with the 50-state compliant Jetta sedan and SportWagen TDI, which meet the most stringent emissions standards in California and the world. Both models will be available this August.

“Our clean diesel vehicles offer consumers a true value with the fuel efficiency that drivers are looking for while providing power, utility and performance,” said Mark Barnes, COO, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “The Jetta TDI’s offer a no compromise alternative fuel driving experience.”

While the Environmental Protection Agency estimates the Jetta TDI at an economical 29 mpg City and 40 mpg Highway, Volkswagen went a step further to show the true fuel economy of the Jetta TDI. Leading third-party certifier, AMCI, has tested the Jetta TDI and found it performed 24 percent better in real world conditions, achieving 38 mpg in the City and 44 mpg on the Highway.*

The Jetta TDI’s come standard with Volkswagen’s Prevent and Preserve Safety System, consisting of numerous standard safety features. Jetta TDI’s include six airbags, with optional rear side airbags, and like all 2009 model year Volkswagens, Jetta TDI’s also feature standard Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) for added safety.
Also standard for 2009 is Volkswagen’s carefree maintenance program, with this program there are no charges for the scheduled maintenance described in the vehicle’s maintenance booklet for the length of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty—three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Volkswagen of America, Inc.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. recently announced Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard equipment on all its 2009 vehicles. As a result, Volkswagen is one of the only original equipment manufacturers to offer an electronic stability control system on their entire product line – ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) deadline requiring vehicles in the 2012 model year to include stability control systems. Volkswagen’s ESP technology works in conjunction with anti-lock brakes and helps reduce loss of control and rollovers to avoid crashes. NHTSA predicts nearly 10,000 lives could be saved each year if automakers included stability systems as standard equipment.

Founded in 1955, Volkswagen of America, Inc. is headquartered in Herndon, Va. It is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen is one of the world’s largest producers of passenger cars and Europe’s largest automaker. Volkswagen sells the Rabbit, New Beetle, New Beetle convertible, GTI, Jetta, GLI, Passat, Passat wagon, Eos, Tiguan and Touareg through approximately 600 independent U.S. dealers. Visit Volkswagen of America online at vw.com.

Should a picture of an old TDI make us anxious for the new one? I mean...does this help us visualize the new one? don't see the point. Consistent prices.

Ok, that is a great price for Jetta with that kind of mileage.

They could have at least photoshopped a TDI emblem on to a new Jetta.

On top of that. With diesel exceeding $5 a gallon the price advantage for going the same amount of miles on regular gas has become almost nil and therefore not worth the addition expense of owning a diesel or paying the premium for it. Your savings for going the same distant become less than $10 for the distance, and in my state it is less than $5 average for driving the same distance. Equate that to the extra $$$ for buying the diesel to begin with, you are basically not gaining anything special other than leaving the guy behind you with his windows down, a horrible, nauseous smell.

Horrible smell??? This ain't your daddy's tractor. Is a clean diesel that is 50 states compliant. Plus, it gets 40 PMG combined and has a huge amount of torque available at low RPM which makes it a really strong, responsive car for every day driving. This car is actually FUN to drive next to being economical. Add the fact that it costs only 2000 dollars more than a comparably equipped gasoline powered Jetta and you have a winner.

Anybody else think that the US government is trying to kill the growth of diesels? I feel like this is just another example - making new diesels sound less efficient.

I don't think they had a choice. They tried and they are still trying to protect the American car industry that is in trouble more than ever. America never built fuel efficient cars and especially fuel efficient diesel cars so things look really tragic now especially with the increase in gasoline prices.
They always counted on the American Consumer to not be interested in fuel efficient cars. It worked, but only up to know.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. When it arrives the car magazines will do real-world mileage comparisons against the hybrids and the diesels will do very well and then when VW introduces the stop/start function with their diesels I don't think the hybrids will have a chance.

There is a similar test with the old Jetta TDI.

Once the Diesel gets the Start/Stop system it will be almost perfect.

Two words: Nickel Cadmium. Both of them are bad for the environment, and both are found in your holier-than-thou Prius, which by the way looks, rides, and drives a lot worse than a Jetta.

I've said this before in response to your posts, but you haven't seemed to get the message: THINK FOR YOURSELF. DON'T JUST BLINDLY ASSUME THAT EVERYTHING TOYOTA DOES IS PERFECT.

Oops. Looks like I was mistaken. The Prius uses a Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) not Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) battery. Either way it's still bad for the environment.

And unlike some members here I can admit that I made a mistake in my previous post and correct it.

My '98 Beetle TDI will still smoke any Civic or Corolla model off a light, although it was really tricky to launch without lighting the tires. I solved that by replacing the Michelins that came on it with Yokohamas. Then the massive diesel torque stretched and broke motor-mount bolts!

Tractor? Think more like vintage drag-racer.

The new TDI with DSG will embarrass most winged vehicles of Japanese origin!

LOL to all those saying diesels are like a tractor, you have not ventured to Europe and driven some yourself. I have driven a Golf TDI and a BMW Diesel, a 123d that produces roughly 201bhp and 300lb/ft of torque and is faster than most gas powered vehicles. And let me tell you, I never smelled them nor did I really ever hear them. When you lifted the hood, you could hear a bit of the familiar "clack-clack" a diesel makes, but that is its character, much like the old VW Beetle with its air-cooled sound, you don't mistake it. Also folks, you all down diesels, but Toyota has quite a few themselves and even Honda is supposed to bring out a few... so to make it a Japanese/ German thing is idiotic. It's just the Germans have advanced the diesel more than the Japanese and the Japanese have advanced the Hybrid more than the Germans. Personally I think Hydrogen is the way in the future, no poisons, no smells, just clean water vapor....

Just as I predicted last year. Once they know you'll pay the diesel premium, they'll make you pay a clean diesel premium on top of it.
$21,900 for 38/45mpg.

Toyota's Prius is $21,500 and gets 48/45mpg and is still cleaner than the TDI.

If this is the best VW can do, they're in for a shock next year. The current Prius is winding down and getting ready to pass the torch to the Prius III.

So how's that hybrid premium, now that diesel cars cost the same and get equal (at best) mileage while the fuel costs even more.

Nothing helps the environment like burning 1/2 the oil that a diesel, which is exactly what the Prius does.

Fools, the lot of'em.

And don't worry your little peanut brains about the env't and batteries, intelligent people have already taken care of it.
http://www.hybridcars.com/battery-toxicity.html
"the toxicity levels and environmental impact of nickel metal hydride batteries—the type currently used in hybrids—are much lower"

"Toyota offers a $200 bounty to ensure that every battery comes back to the company. In a press release, Toyota states, "Every part of the battery, from the precious metals to the plastic, plates, steel case and the wiring, is recycled"

"Honda collects the battery and transfers it to a preferred recycler to follow their prescribed process..."

"Honda, Toyota and the entire auto industry are pumping millions of dollars into research regarding lithium ion batteries for tomorrow's cars...Fortunately, supplanting lead and nickel batteries with rechargeable lithium batteries is also promising from an environmental perspective"

http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jm/hybridfaq.htm
"Toyota reports that while it has had a battery recycling program for dealers since it sold its first hybrids here in 1999, it has not received a single battery pack. Toyota also says that if a battery pack should need replacing out of warranty, it will be around the same price as a transaxle, or about $3,500." That's in Canadian dollars.

huu, how do you explain the fact that the used, three-year-old Jetta diesel in the Edmunds video that monkeyrun linked to above ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46nMnCt75qI ) emitted 0.19 tons of CO2 on their trip compared to the 2008 Prius which emitted just a little less at 0.18 tons of CO2? Edmunds also made it clear (1:42 mark) that the Prius' big advantage in city driving mileage was because it could automatically shut off the motor. I bet if this old Jetta had that ability, it would have won this mileage comparison so just imagine the mileage (and CO2 emissions) that the new VW diesels will get when they get the stop/start function that VW recently announced.

Jetta is a bargain, and NO battery to replace. If ther is one thing vw is good at its making bodies that don't disappear (like Toyota). Want a car for ten years. Buy the Jetta.

the fox or something smaller would be. My dad averages 48 to low 50s in his Jetta TDI. Here in CA the fuel isgetting closer in cost. At this rate 91 will be more.

Wow Toyotq is trying hard to fix the enviromental issue they created. Look up how bad the production of the batteries are and the lower predicted lifespan of a hybrid are on the enviroment.

The demo units (1 per dealer) are supposed to arrive in the last week of June.
Then they can start taking orders (VW is not allowing any orders to be taken yet, although most dealers have a long waiting list already).
The cars are being built and stock-piled because they are certified as a 2009 model, and can't be sold yet (would have to be also certified as 2008 or some BS).
But they will be delivered to dealers to arrive on the first date that they can be legally sold.
Custom orders won't be arriving till December time-frame (and unlike most small Japanese cars, VW specializes in custom-built cars ... in fact, in Europe 60% of production is custom-ordered by the customer)

That's incredible that VW may release start/stop in 2010. The 1999 Prius had this feature already.

tubrospyder,
www.fueleconomy.gov and look up the Prius and Jetta TDI, then count how many barrels of oil each car burns through in a year. (7.4 vs 11.6)

As for the video, the Jetta barely beat the Prius on the highway (03 and 1.3mpg) but got annihilated in the city (by 20mpg). Did you not notice the Jetta also costs 20% more to fuel up as well?
The mpg for the 2005 and the new 2009 Jetta are basically identical.
There's also a big difference between Toyota's Start/Stop vs VW. The Prius can run on electric up to 30km/hr, the moment you hit the gas pedal on the VW, the diesel starts up. You can do that now if you want to, just turn off the engine.
Face it, VW stands no chance against Toyota's next gen synergy drive if it can't even stay close to the current Prius.

Whatthe,
The Jetta used to be a bargain when (Canada) you could get one for $21,000 vs a $29,500 Prius. the current Jetta TDI (not the bluemotion) is $27,500, the new one will probably hit $30,000 CDN.
As in my previous post, the US pricing for TDI and hybrids are now equal except diesel costs more and the Prius gets better mileage.

evilhomer,
The Prius and Jetta are the same class. It has too much interior room to be considered a compact.

Hello Everyone,
For anyone that does not think the VW Diesel is not worth the extra $1000 for the TDI engine, consider that it mentions on the VW website that highway fuel mileage could be in the mid 60s. Imagine traveling 600 miles on 10 gallons of diesel. This still makes sense even if diesel goes up to $10/gallon. Plus people have the option of using bio-diesel and not sending one more dollar to our middle eastern friends. This car is bigger, more powerful, more fun to drive, more efficient, and less expensive than a Prius or Civic Hybrid. -Plus no batteries to replace.

This is awesome news! The VW TDI has the potential to become a big part of the solution. I only hope VW is able to supply enough Jetta TDIs to meet demand. Even if fuel mileage is only 38/44, it is the the best real world economy available. Plus it is big enough for a family of 4, or maybe even a family of 5. Think, better fuel mileage than a Yaris, Smart, Prius, or Mini Cooper, but big enough for a family.

This makes sense!
Jon

Yeah, so. Canada rates the Prius 71city and 67highway mpg, the TDI only rates in the mid 40s.

Diesels are a part of the problem. You don`t become more oil independent by using a fuel that needs more oil to make, the solution is to use less oil which apparently is too difficult to understand for some.
