Volkswagen Focuses On Toyota As Their Biggest Competitor
W plans 12 new models over the next three years to accomplish this goal, raising global deliveries from its record six million vehicles this year to eight million in 2010.

A remake of the Scirocco sports hatchback, a minivan built in cooperation with Chrysler LLC, and the Tiguan crossover are three of the planned models.

However it’s likely the car based on the recently unveiled up! concept will add a significant portion of the new sales, especially as developing countries such as India and China begin to exert their collective buying power. Volkswagen is already a sales leader in the crucial Chinese market.

With profit forecasts looking up thanks to unspecified cost-cutting measures, VW hopes to increase production by 10% per year for the near future.

I have to say- Toyota is everyone's biggest competitor at this point.

However, it's nice to see VW focusing. They should do less "toy" projects and instead get their bread-and-butter to be much better than the competition. Right now, their cars are only a lot better. They need to be more than that, and how about North American-built cars for the US and Canada, that are actually reliable?

I couldn't agree more, projects like the Veyron and Phaeton are impressive but show a lack of focus on VW's part. They need to focus on their bread and butter products like the Golf and Passat. With Porsche's know-how i've no doubt they can do this.

If they built more reliable cars they'd be seen as a bigger threat. They definitely have the styling aspect down.

my friend had a VW cabriolet with 500K on it and all he did to the engine was routine maintenance. VW makes reliable cars!

Toyota is not BMW or Mercedes biggest competitor at anything other than sales # and who wants a car that has as many on the road as the camry?

no german make is a competitor to toyota with respect to reliability.

vws are NOT reliable. friend of mine has a new Bug. her window switch craps out every now and then. forcing her to drive with the window WIDE OPEN in rain AND SNOW and -20 weather in the winter.

the engines always start, but german cars have TERRIBLE electrics/electronics.

that's MINUS 20 fahrenheit. and sometimes it gets down to the minus 30s and minus 40s here in interior alaska.

(but not much lately, what with global warming.)

vws do so poorly here, the local franchise was allowed to lapse and there is NO DEALER here anymore. audi got run out of town years ago. as did bmw and saab.
mb only still survives as the local store also has a mazda franchise.

I am sure there are many horror stories about VW reliability. That reputation is what keeps VW at the back of the pack against the big Japanese car companies.

the jetta needs a facelift-looks loosely like the corolla. VW needs to build a plant in NA to lower cost on its USDM cars, biggest sellers of VW would help.
