Volkswagen Holds The Sales Line In May With A 0.1% Increase
Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced May 2008 sales of 22,346 units, a 0.1 percent increase over the May 2007 sales of 22, 325 vehicles.   On a year-to-date basis, 2008 Volkswagen sales are 0.6 percent ahead of 2007 sales through May.

A sign that people are ready for top down summer driving is that both the New Beetle convertible and Eos posted strong May sales results. Volkswagen’s innovative coupe-convertible-sunroof Eos posted its best sales month ever with sales of 1,807 units, up 21.2 percent over last May. New Beetle convertible posted sales of 1,809 units, up 20.6 percent compared to May 2007.

The Passat sedan and wagon also posted strong May sales numbers with sales of 3,694 units, up 18.5 percent compared to May 2007.

Let me propose 2 potential reasons, and you can comment on which is more realistic:

#1: makers of "high value" cars are less affected by a recession (unlike Acura, GM, Lexus that are all way down)

OR

#2: VW's "quirky customer base" seems to be resistant to a recession (either they are in positions that aren't affected as much, or they just don't care what the mainstream thinks ... Never Follow :)

OR

#3: your ideas here

comments?

Up is up! In a bad market, I would take anything in the plus rather than minus...

Considering what the rest of the American auto industry is doing, this is quite good.

Who cares... Are these the kind of "headlines" we can expect every time the monthly sales figures are released for EACH manufacturer?
