Volkswagen Polo “Cleaner Than A Toyota Prius”
Volkswagen is claiming that the new Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion is cleaner than the Toyota Prius. The company is saying that the Polo BlueMotion emits 102g/km, which is 2g/km less than Toyota’s electric hybrid, the Prius. The Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion uses a three cylinder 1.4 direct injection turbodiesel engine that gives it the ability to do 72.4 mpg and a 0-60 mph time of 12.4 seconds. With a top speed of 109 mph, the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion isn’t the fastest vehicle, nontheless it is efficient. The car is expected to go on sale in the UK next year. Read Article

Its the VW "A2 without Leather & wood". Audi has sold a special A2 model (I think its called the "4-liter" car because its rated at only 4 liters fuel consumption per 100km, or about 80 MPG, giving it excemptions for both sales tax and licensing fees in Germany) for years now.
Compared to the base A2, the 4-liter has a lot more aluminum in the suspension and body parts to reduce weight.

Here's a used one on Audi's German site: (very long link) http://vtp.audi.com/awdwbek/controller.do?act=offer&sid=2&selfAction=&tab=&sortBy=&sortOrder=&page=&v=0&ixList=4¬epad=&lines=&compare=&ixCheck=

Yes, it looks better than the Prius, but I don't know if my 6'5" bod would fit inside. However, knowing VW, its probably spacious (in a special, "micro-car" sort of way ;)

It's a shame that VW doesn't have a car like this for the US market. Great economy and I'm sure better than a Prius.

Let's see, why would anyone choose a Prius over this?
Because it is.....
Larger
More stylish
Able to accelerate through an intersection before the light turns red again.

Seriously, if you're comparing a car the size of a grain of salt to a Prius you might as well throw in that it beats a Suburban in MPG and emissions as well.

There are dozens of cars that get better mileage than the Prius, countless mroe that accelerate faster, are roomier, or are more luxurious. These constant comparisons only show how amazing the Prius is. Because the Prius combines style, roominess, amenities, speed, mileage, and clean emissions, all at a reasonable price. NOBODY else offers a package that complete.

And it certainly isn't cheap.

No, its purpose is to offer no compromises. A mid sized family sedan that offers reasonable performance, great fuel ecomonomy and great emissions. And it looks great, I dont care what any haters say. The Polo cannot be compared to it, because it is 2 classes smaller. $ people would be cramped. The Prius seats 5, with cargo. All at about 25K in US.

1970toyotamarc, what are you talking about? The Prius is the definition of compromises. It's a hybrid (tradeoff), the dashboard is in the center (compromise), the engine is crappy (compromise), it's small (compromise), it's ugly (compromise), it handles like crap (steering and braking), and really not last and certainly not least, it's a Toyota (too big of a compromise).

I would certainly pay 1/3 more because the Prius:

1. Has more room, I like to have space to put things and still bring some friends along
2. Has way more features and is more luxurious.
3. ABS and VSC
4. Is more reliable

So they have a year to gouge before the next Prius arrives and embarasses them...again.

So Germany's latest and greatest can barely beat the Prius. Wow.

Who cares, both can sit one person comfortably. That is how people commute. Both can sit 2 comfortably. Rarely do people actually use the back seat to get to work.

Toyota only gets beaten by all these ridiculous comparisons. You know a Prius is slow as molasses compared to a 911...PRIUS MUST SUCK
Prius can't haul shit, compared to a Suburban...PRIUS MUST SUCK
Prius uses more gas the a bicycle...PRIUS MUST SUCK.

Get my point?

There is nothing that compares to the no compromise vehicle Prius right now except Toyota's own Camry hybrid. (The Attima will compare when it comes out, since it's virtually a Camry hybrid)

But for those saying this thing looks far better, now might be an appropriate time to remove your head from your anal area.

I have to laugh about the Toyota benefits with safety features like ABS mentioned.
This has not been an option on a VW for years, as these safety features are standard on ALL VWs sold in the US, along with 4-wheel disc brakes (even on the vans) and have been for years.
However, for Toyota, ABS is an option, and 4-wheel discs aren't even available for some models.
A lowly Chevy Cavalier has better brakes than any Camry.

And what about that Matrix, with the brakes that have to be replaced in 1 year?
The dealers say this is normal, but they don't want their customers to talk to owners of other car makes.
I drive a Mexican built VW with 210,000 kms (130,000 miles) with the original clutch, exhaust, and I just replaced the original brake pads a few months ago. (2nd battery, 4 sets of tires)
Suspension is tight as new. And if you compare a '98 Beetle to a '98 Camry, I have a higher safety rating for side impacts (getting T-boned by an SUV is your worst scenario in city traffic).

The Prius is a good car (although not necessarily environmentally friendly when you consider manufacturing and disposal), but don't ever get into a safety argument against any kind of European car. They invented almost every safety feature (except laminated glass: GM) on modern cars.

One anecdotal experience with a car does not match up against a proper statistical analysis with thousands of cars. On average, Toyotas are more reliable than VWs. Please do not try and argue this as you will not be taken seriously if you do. VW consistenly finished near the bottom regarding long term reliability.

By the way, Europeans do not have the Monolpoly on Safety.

Wow, for the money of a Prius here in the Netherlands you can buy a VW Golf TDI with 140HP and 320 NM of torque.
And you can still get 60 MPG.

MDalle,
The current Prius is 2sec faster, gets a little less mileage (EPA that doesn't include stop and go) but has the interior space of a mid-size car, yet only coughs up 2 more g/km. The Lupo won't be out for atleast another year and it can barely beat the current Prius, let alone the next one.

Chewy,
Ever hear of HOV lanes for carpooling? 2-5 people per car. I don't know how many ppl fit in the Lupo front seat, but the Prius has ample room in the back...for commuting/car pooling.

Heyhuub,
Popular Mechanics clocked the TDI at over 10 seconds, a smidge slower than the Prius (not noticeable but definitely not 9 sec).

Very few people actually car pool. The Jetta used a 100 hp/177 lb-ft torque version. The new one will have 140 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque, and the engine has made up to 170. That version would whoop up on the Prius silly. And the current EPA test does have simulated stop and go without the actual stop and go, so the Prius runs on battery power that is unlikely in the real world. We will see how the common rail Jetta is rated when it comes out, for one thing it will definately have more performance than the Prius.

huu76huu76 - 12/14/2006 11:35:25 PM
0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Yes Chewy, we will see. Just like we saw the Jetta NOT get better mileage than the Prius...real world.

We will also see the Prius run cleaner.

and we'll see how buyers here like paying 20-30% more to fill up their car while getting the same mileage as their hybrid neighbours.

Wrong about EPA, an article a few days back just stated EPA doesn't take into effect stop/go driving yet.

If not for Europe subsidizing diesel, they'd be relugated to delivery trucks and buses long ago.

Very few ppl car pool? Maybe in Europe. Carpooling has been on the rise since we lost the days of $0.60/L and everyone started moving to the burbs. Then again, it's different when you can't drive through your country in two hours.

I have two things for you Chewy, they weren't reported by users from the internet.

Pages 6 and 7, Prius out does TDI in city and highway, real world.
http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/new_cars/1215782.html?page=1

http://auto.consumerguide.com/articles/index.cfm/act/featuredarticles/article/FA_CG_FUEL_CHAMPS.html

The 2nd article shows the Prius out did the TDI (w/ manual) but since it's interior room is the same as a mid-size car, they excluded it. Imagine that, a bigger car with better fuel economy. On top of that, load up a TDI with the same features as a Prius and there isn't much of a price difference.

These were "experts" to did the test, not people who can report whatever they want on the internet (like what your report uses).

Heyhuub,
Gas is taxed much higher than diesel. That's subsidization. In N.America, they're taxed about the same thereby leaving the market to decide. Diesel acceptance in Europe is artificial.
