Volkswagen Resurrects Plans For Mid Engine Coupe

Volkswagen has resurrected plans for an affordable, mid-engine coupe and roadster tandem as part of an image-building campaign aimed at highlighting the company's design and engineering prowess.

VW chairman Martin Winterkorn is planning to unveil a concept version of the lightweight two-seater at the Los Angeles show in November. If public opinion is positive, the new car could be in showrooms by 2011. It's been styled under Walter de' Silva and borrows from VW's vast parts bin to keep development costs low.

Kind of a weird looking thing but I think it's cool. Some minor tweaks at it would be great.

I see a lot of inspiration from a Bentley in this car.
Pretty cool looking concept though.

The rear tail lights have the same shape as the Bentley GT. Other then that I don't see a lot of similarities. What other parts are you seeing? Just curious....

So many things about this would never go as a production built car (windshield for one). I do find the concept interesting. Looks great with the top down - not so much with it up. Smooth out the back and it might attract a niche market.

You are very true to some extent. Not sure that applies here. I think people that are buying the EOS would be different then buyers of this car. They should offer just the lower priced EOS and have this as a higher priced alternative. Without trying to be negative - I think your logic could be the same with the 128/135 and 328/335 convertibles. No?

bmwdrvrbmwdrvr - 8/14/2008 1:27:15 PM
0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
NO.....a 3 series hardtop convertible is some 8-10,000 or more expensive than the 1 series rag top no there is enough price spread between these 2 cars.... VW group has alot of cars that are based on the same platform, and use the same engines that simply overlap, moreso than anyone else.....not to mention it was also rumoured Audi was getting a version of this car(theres a surprise) while I wont go through the LONG list of cars that overlap at the VW group...if you do enough research you will see there is a ton...thats not normal

who cares? by your title, i gather that you don't drive a vw/audi so why bother with comenting on the brand and what they decide to do? it doesn't bother me that bangles designs are ugly because i'm simply not interested.

pretty ignorrant comment......so by your logic you cant comment on a car you dont drive.....lol...excuse me I didnt realize we were "forced" to be that bias to not even look at a post of a brand you dont drive....I guess that means no one should comment on the GTR despite ton of post, or on supercars right? or for that matter just ignore every post that isnt the brand you drive.....go away please

The product choices this company makes are terrible. You want to remake the image? Try selling something that could sell some volume. Can you even imagine how many family-hauling hybrid or diesel Microbus units they could sell, if it was even done half as well as the MINI?

Kinda has the TVR with the stacked headlights and all. But personally I don't like it. How about VW builds something useful for the US like the Scirrocco. Oh wait, that's right, I think the last thing they need is another hatchback in the lineup. They created like 15 models off of one car.

Golf, Rabbit, GTI, R32, etc.

That is the stupidest thing I read in a while.
Yes, there are different trim levels for the Golf. What exactly is unusual about that?

0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Whelan - in the rest of the world, the Rabbit doesn't exist, and the GTI and R32 are simply the 'Golf R32' or 'Golf GTI'. It's quite obvious that the GTI and Golf are the same car...
I can't imagine your reaction if you came to Europe, where the full list of Golf/Rabbit based cars is this:
Audi TT (Only lightly though)
Audi A3
Seat Leon
Seat Altea
Seat Toledo
Skoda Octavia
VW Tiguan
VW Golf
VW Scirocco
VW Golf Plus
VW Touran
VW Jetta
VW Caddy

I was going to add that if you include the stretched platform, the Passat, Eos and Skoda Superb can be included.

amazin, are you a Nigerian scammer? You say some of the weirdest shit. "1" does not sound like "I" in any way, shape, or form. Rhymes are based on sounds.

And how is a VW a rebadged VW, you need to start making sense or stay off the sherm.

To amazinBimmer - I agree that BMWs are better performance cars overall than VWs but they also cost significantly more. As an owner of both an 07 335i and an 06 Jetta 2.0T, I can tell you that the Jetta 2.0T is a pretty great car for its price. Also, I can say the quality of the 335i is pretty great but it does have some flaws. Nothing terrible but about the same number as the 1 year older Jetta 2.0 so far. You should try to be more balanced. Unfortunately, all you've succeeded in doing here is to give BMW drivers a bad name.

I have no brand loyalty. I have been waiting for years for someone to come out with a car I want at a price I am willing to pay. It must be a rwd coupe. The BMW Z4 coupe or the Cayman would be tops on my list but are just too over priced for me. The VW is an interesting newcomer but it is just too ugly to consider. The front end isn't pretty but I could live with it. The rearend makes me neauseus. THey need to learn from Toyota. The last Mr2 drove great but was so ully compared to the one it replaced that nobody bought it and it went away. Ford had the same problem in the 80s. They built an ugly little two seater called the EXP. It didn't sell. Ford said the market for two seaters just wasn't there. Shortly there after Mazda introduced the Miata and it sold in record numbers and still exists. It doesn't cost anymore to make pretty sheet metal than it does to stamp out ugly sheet metal.
