Volkswagen Rides The TDI To A 2.9% Increase August Sales
Volkswagen of America Inc today announced August 2008 sales of 22,292 units a 2.9 percent increase over the August 2007 sales of 21,655 vehicles.   On a year-to-date basis, 2008 Volkswagen sales are 1.3 percent ahead of 2007 sales through August.

“We’re extremely pleased with our August sales results,” said Mark Barnes, COO, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “This is a tough economy and for Volkswagen to be ahead of last year’s sales is a true testament to the strength of our brand. With our recent launch of all-new 50-state compliant clean diesel Jetta TDI, Jetta SportWagen, Tiguan and our other exciting new product offerings, like the CC and Routan arriving late September, we’re looking forward to continued success.”

August represents the best Jetta month for Volkswagen since May 2006. With fuel economy becoming a key purchase criterion, consumers are looking at more economical vehicles, which positions Volkswagen very well. Volkswagen’s all-new 50-state compliant clean diesel Jetta TDI is selling about as fast as the dealers can get them into their showrooms, with a turn rate of close to 75 percent.

VW better make some more Jetta TDIs to make sure the supply doesn't run out.

In this economy, 2.9% increase is pretty massive.

Go VW.

Look what happens when hybrids are priced the same as diesels. The Prius sold more cars than all of VW if you subtract the SUVs and Passat.

I'm thinking Passat drivers downgraded to the Jetta.

Assuming you can actually get your money from the gov't, didn't VW TDI's just start qualifying for gov't incentives/rebates while Toyota/Lexus hybrid nolonger qualify because they sell so well.

That would explain the increase in TDI sales but it doesn't explain why hybrids still sell so well even thought incentives.

VW just started selling the Jetta TDI. Toyota only sold 3,000 or so hybrid Camrys, while they sold 43,000 or so Camrys total. Sure doesn't sound like people really want a hybrid unless they can show it off to everyone.

VW sells much fewer cars in the US than Toyota, obviously it won't sell as many Jetta TDIs as Toyota does Prius. But they are going to sell a decent amount of Jetta TDIs, and that's the plan.

Ummm, did I say anything about exact volume? I was talking about the dynamics of how hybrids sell themselves now while diesels have to rely on rebates (there's that shoe on the other foot).

Prius and Jetta are the same price yet Prius' are selling-out while Jettas are only moving because of the new rebate.

The Camry-hybrid and Prius are the same price in Canada and have comparable interior volume. If you don't need room, you go for the car with the extra 10+ mpg. Camry-hybrid's biggest competitor is the Prius.

One has to put these sales numbers in perspective. It doesn't give us much of a sense for which technology is more popular when a Camry is compared against a Jetta since total Camry sales far exceed any compact car.

What is the percentage of Camry hybrids to total Camrys sold?

And...

What is the percentage of Jetta TDI's sold as a percentage of all Jettas.

In this context, comparing only these two models, the diesel technology wins!
