Volkswagen Sends Dieselution Tour Across America to Promote Advances, Benefits of Clean Diesel Technology
Volkswagen of America, Inc. is launching the Dieselution Tour, a mobile marketing exhibit, to educate the media and the public on advances in clean diesel technology and alternative fuels.
The Dieselution Tour will feature the 2009 Jetta TDI, Volkswagen's new, 50-state clean diesel offering. The vehicle is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. in spring of 2008. Also on display, a 3.0-liter V6 TDI Touareg, the Polo Blue Motion and the oldest Volkswagen diesel in America, a 1977 Rabbit.

I'd be surprised if they told the whole story.
I'm sure no one wants to hear how diesel will force N.America to import even more oil and still pollute more than a hybrid. Telling people that diesel is priced on par with gasoline eventhough consumption is only 1/10th might cause some to lose their interest as well.
But hey, if we're lucky, VW will let us pay more for this diesel than the last ones and we get to pay more for diesel if/when demand goes up.
Atleast we can feel all Eurotrashy inside :)

It will pollute less than the first gen Prius. The difference is pretty small between 50 state diesel and no California hybrids. The Jetta won't be using up much oil.
Hoping to catch the toor as it rolls into CA.

Diesel can easily cut down US oil consumption by 20%.

There are five main emission types for petrols and diesels: Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO),
Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Hydrocarbons, Particulates. The only area in which diesel is worse than petrol is particulates, its equal on NOx and better on the remaining three.

I'd be driving a diesel Rabbit right now if they sold one. Instead it comes with an inefficient low power gas engine only.

move to Canada.
You can't even buy a gas-powered jetta wagon here: they're all TDIs
Most VW dealers are selling more diesels than gas.
Now if only they'd bring the 5-cyl. TDI Touareg that they sell in Europe instead of that thristy V-10 beast.
Or the A6 with the V TDI, or my favourite: the Audi A8 with 4-liter TDI V8!

The Jetta needs a styling update. Otherwise, I'm very excited about this technology! It will probably get around 50mpg on the highway.

Last time I checked, 20 barrels of oil is more than 16 barrels.

bet they didn't factor in how much oil is burned to crack crude into gasoline, and how much diesel was burned to move the oil TO the refinery, and then ship it back.
Take your gasoline figures and add 50% or so to get the real cost of oil usage compared to diesel.
And don't even get me started on the huge environmental impact of building a Prius. We'd be better off environmentally to each have our own nuclear reactor! (seriously)

Diesel will displace all gasoline engines eventually.
The EPA is outlawing gasoline engines for airplanes already.
(and yes, there are diesel engines for small planes)
Eventually there will be 3 major drivetrain choices:
* limited city use: electric
* "normal" city use: diesel hybrid
* all others: plain diesel
Nothing else makes sense.
(and Toyota is expanding both diesel engine work, and diesel hybrid work, and quietly killing off gas diesels)

While I support your use of diesel as the fuel source to convert too...The statment that the EPA is outlawing gasoline engines in Aircraft is stretching it a bit.
As a pilot and an individual who works extremly closly with the FAA, there are no plans in the works to outlaw 100LL using aircraft, nor Kerosene of Jet A using aircraft. If such were the case Airline Owners and Pilots Assosciation would be having a small fit right now.
Besides what the EPA says has very little bearing on the Aviations community. The main concerns the EPA deals with when it comes to Aviation is Noise Emmisions and fuel and de-icing run off collection.
However your second statment is correct, there are a couple diesel powered General Aviation aircraft. As a matter of fact the first 4 seater twin engine diesel was just certified for transatlantic use (though I sure as hell wouldn't fly a 4 seater across the pond).

Okay--Well I didn't take the time to read Huu76's impossible link--but lets look at the basic numbers and it is easy to see that the EPA is more accurate than our anti-diesel advocate on this site.
The EPA says that a one-third market share of light-duty diesel vehicles would save us 1.4 million barrels of oil per day; the same amount of oil we import from Saudi Arabia.
In the specific case of the VW Jetta, one can choose a 2.5L I-5 gasser that gets 26 mpg (city / hwy combined running gasoline); a 2.0L I-4 FSI gas engine that gets 28 mpg (city / hwy combined) premium gasoline only; or the new TDI 2.0L I-4 diesel that will get between 43 and 48 mpg (city/hwy combined). That means that the TDI has a 73% fuel economy advantage over the standard gas engine and a 61% fuel economy advantage over the FSI engine. I cannot in my wildest dreams imagine a car that is 73% more efficient is using more oil.
Additionally, the TDI is the only one of the three engines that can run on a renewable, alternative fuel without modification and without loss in fuel economy. All diesels can run on 100% biodiesel or renewable diesel, which means any diesel can run without any petroleum except for that lubricative oil used in the crank case. So, even if the gas engines were designed to run more than 10% ethanol, they would be far less efficient running the ethanol than running gasoline. This isn't true for diesels running renewable fuels. Cummins Engine Corporation estimates that a diesel, running on 100% biodiesel, would suffer only five to seven percent fuel economy loss, whereas flex-fuel vehicles commonly loses 27% fuel economy running E85 (www.fueleconomy.gov--ethanol-fueled vehicles--2007).
