Volkswagen's All-New Clean Diesel Jetta TDI Sets New Guinness World Record for Lowest Fuel Consumption at 58.82 MPG
Monday September 29, 2:31 pm ET
The Taylors break Guinness World Record driving a stock clean diesel Jetta TDI
HERNDON, Va., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The world's most fuel efficient couple, John and Helen Taylor, have broken the current world record for lowest fuel consumption across the 48 contiguous United States averaging 58.82 miles to the gallon. They ended their 20 day trip in West Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008. To help them break the world record, they drove the all-new, 50-state-compliant clean diesel Volkswagen Jetta TDI, fueled by Shell Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuel under real world driving conditions, simply applying easy to use fuel saving tips and the latest efficient engine technology available for good clean diesel fun.
"We are very excited and grateful to have broken the current Guinness World Record for lowest fuel consumption across the 48 contiguous United States," said Helen Taylor. "We would like to thank Volkswagen for providing us their new clean diesel Jetta that helped us get another World Record and to Shell for supplying the diesel fuel."
The previous Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption on a nationwide drive was 51.58 miles per gallon and the Taylors broke it by setting a new record of 58.82 miles per gallon, a whopping 14 percent improvement. In 20 days, driving across 48 states the Taylors drove 9,419 miles, exceeding 60 mpg on several legs of the record-setting run, spending only 6.9 cents per mile (total was $653).
"The terrain was very diverse, the weather less than ideal, and the traffic heavy at rush hour and the VW Jetta TDI handled it all beautifully, showing its fuel efficiency and its fun-to-drive dynamic capability, just two of this vehicle's many attributes," said John Taylor. "The car efficiently helped us to drive to a fuel economy world record."
People were encouraged to e-mail the Taylors along the way at: fuelacademy@gmail.com with any questions they may have about the tour, the vehicle or about fuel economy tips and join their "Fan" page on Facebook.com. As of the end of the trip, more than 2,000 people have e-mailed the Taylors.
Approximately 12 official check-in and refueling stops across the country were included throughout the duration of the drive. The couple drove on a counter-clockwise route passing through: Washington D.C.; New York City, Rutland, Vermont; Toledo, Ohio; Des Moines, Iowa; Spearfish, S.D.; Missoula, Mont.; Winnemucca, Nev.; Santa Monica, Calif.; Durango, Colo.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mount Vernon, Ill.; Ponchatoula, La.; and, Beckley, W.V. Some of the fuel saving tips the Taylors advocate include: avoiding idling and higher speeds, minimizing vehicle drag and performing regular vehicle maintenance.
The Taylors have made a 26-year career out of driving economically and conducting workshops globally on fuel-efficient driving techniques. They have collected 82 world fuel economy and vehicle-related records from drives around the globe in Australia, Asia, South Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North America.
Via their Web site, the Taylors will be sharing their personal experiences on the road. For more information and regular reports from the road, visit www.fuelacademy.com and www.media.vw.com. For a complete list of fuel-saving driving tips, visit http://www.shell.com/us/fuelstretch.

One more prove that Diesel is the future. Bravo VW for putting Toyota and the other Japanese hybrid makers on their knees.

This is great news for VW, way to go! But, why would someone want to bring someone else to their knees? Why specifically single out Japanese hybrid makers? How about American and upcoming European hybrid makers? Someone's got serious personal issues...

Thats not to say diesel is a bad thing, but most automakers are being open to other options other than diesel. So attacking just japanese hybrids is just another example of narrow-mindedness if other automakers are doing the same thing.

I find it funny how TurboSpyder managed to copy and paste this article but did not include the last two paragraphs that mention that this is a press release from VW. Imagine if this was a good news story about the Prius and it was a Toyota press release...Imagine how many haters there would be.

lmao...Star's comment are from the minds of a 5 year old, playing with their hotwheels. Try thinking outside the box for once "Little Star"...Kudos for VW accomplishing this major achievement...but even VW realize that with this major achievement, they set themselves to become the guinnea pig...remember diesel technology is much easier to create oppose to hybrid-tech or any other fuel alternatives for that matter...the japanese makers understand diesel-tech and have thier own on the shelf...so when need be they can easily mate both diesel and hybrid tech and create some serious mpgs...and if the Chevy Volt can achieve the claim of 100 mpgs for new epa...then what is the point for diesel gas in that sense? No one has fallen to their knees "Little Star", other than yourself busy playing and rollin those Hotwheels around lmao!!!

One of the most significant articles to be posted all year. More siginificant will be when battery-powered cars with instant torque hit the scene in real numbers too. Remember when you buy this Jetta you get a $1300 tax credit as well!

I'm curious to see what the Volt can do and the next gen Prius. Technology and competition is great, we all benefit.

...in related news, traffic was backed up for over 30 miles in WV as oblivious couple weaved lane to lane barely doing 35mph.

This is a temporary win for VW but since they don't know to build hybrid or electric cars and the future is all about stepping away from petroleum based vehicles, it'll be bye bye for VW :(

No it was laptop battery recall by Dell for batteries made in China. This was a production problem not the designs of the battery itself. 2 yrs ago.
Hybrids use Nickel Metal Hydride.

A Sony factory in China? And I just read that the recall eventually reached 8 million batteries.

That`s quite good , they probably didn`t drive in city much , rather more outside city where diesels get good numbers .
In europe owners of the Golf 2.0 TDI have average consumption of 6,3 liter per 100 km which is about 37-38 mpg and their cars haven`t as many catalysts as that sold in US which are also increasing consumption .

Drove the car today, frankly couldn't tell the difference from a 2.0T. Great torque. Makes me want a 335d.

Yawn. Someone who's trying to get good mileage will do the same thing in a Prius. Throw a couple of cities in the way and see how the TDI does then.
Drive 9000 miles in the city and see how great diesels are then. Probably barely be able to hit 25mpg.

AutoCar magazine recently tested the BMW 320d with BMW's Efficient Dynamics technology that includes *auto stop/start and brake energy regeneration* and it gets a combined mileage of 48 miles per US gallon (57.6 miles per imperial gallon) and it does 0 to 62*mph in 8.1s! No hybrid can come close to matching that kind of mileage and performance. Hybrid is hype.

To respond to TurboSpyder, that's a really impressive blend of performance and economy. Makes me want a 335d (even though lower mileage than the 320d, but imagine the performance!).
However, one thing I do disagree with is that hybrids are hype. I think they are just different cars for different consumers who look for different things, or drive in different scenarios. Hybrids are great technology, as are diesels.
I just think it's great the option pool is getting larger, regardless of technology :)
