Volkswagen to Revolutionize Internal Combustion Engine
Volkswagen introduced its Combined Combustion System (CCS) engine to the press this week in the newly restyled Touran. The CCS engine combines the best of a gasoline and diesel engines to produce an extremely fuel efficient yet clean engine. Here is how it works, "It was designed to meld the homogeneous combustion and low nitrous oxide emissions of a typical small capacity petrol powerplant with the self ignition and low fuel consumption properties of a modern day diesel – the aim being to combine the best attributes of each." Here is another great tidbit, "Volkswagen is predicting the CCS engine could be ready for inclusion in production cars from early next decade, if current initiatives to make synthetic fuel available on a large scale come to fruition. Together with the prototype we drove, VW also has turbocharged versions on test beds producing output figures similar to those of existing diesel units. The next step is to combine the CCS engine with electric drive to create a hybrid that Kohnen predicts will set a whole new standard for achievable environmental sustainability." Volkswagen says that its CCS engines will be out as early as next decade. Read the article for more information about VW's innovative CCS engine.

Interesting. I've heard about this before; I think they have been testing this technology for a while.
Definitely would be cool, but would it be cost efficient?

Did we forget about HTFC?
Once again, announcing something just to claim being first. I'll believe it when I see a working model that won't be 10+ years down the road.
So they're proposing selling, gas, diesel and this new goop at gas stations. I think we'll see hydrogen stations before that happens.
Good that they're trying new things, eventhough it's a waste of money. You can make a car run on alcohol, but what's the point?

No one has ever made a CCS engine before. Stop making up crap.
"Seventh (S120 Model: 1983 to 1987)
Launched in 1983. The model used 5M-GE 2800 cm³ double overhead cam (DOHC), 1G-GE 2000 cm³ DOHC, M-TE 2000 cm³ single overhead cam (SOHC) Turbo, M-E 2000cc SOHC, 2L-TE 2400 cm³ SOHC Turbo Diesel or 2L 2400 cm³ SOHC Diesel engines. Base versions use the new 2 litre 1G-E engine which replaced the old 2 litre version of the M series. The 'van' version of the station wagon (the GS126V as well as the GS136V in the following series) used its own unique variant of this motor (the 1G-EJ)."
DOHC (double overhead cam) engine is not the same thing. Can you say owned?

Apparently not. I believe you though. Only because I HATE Volkswagen and wish nothing more than to see them go down like Oldsmobile. (They don't make Oldsmobile anymore.)

I don't understand what you mean: "I would own a Toyota any day (if I had a gun to my head)". Does that mean you hate Toyota? But I agree with you on VW couldn't invent technology. They couldn't invent technology if they had a step-by-step instruction manual.

VW has done more for the car business than Toyota, my ignorant "friend". Why do you hate VW? Because they make the more exciting, better-looking products with better interiors? Because of their history? Why?
I don't hate Lexus for example, but I hate Lexus fanboys who talk BS all the time. You fit into that category, Mr. Lexus IS350.

VW may have done more for the car business than Toyota, but Toyota was the one who used their inventions and made them better. They've exceeded the building capacity of Volkswagen. I hate Volkswagen purley because I buy a car expecting it to work. I buy a car for reliability and durability. I have had experiences with Volkswagen that have made me say, "Why on Earth would anyone want to go through what I have with this car?" This is the main reason I like Toyota Motor Co. They make cars that I can trust. I don't have problems with them. They're there when I need them to be there. That's what a car should do. If there was an emergency and you needed your car quickly, would you want it to work or just sit there and have the engine turn over and die? I have my reasons to hate Volkswagen. And Bill, I don't talk BS about Lexus. I love Toyota products because they do what a car should do, at little or no sacrifice to me. I do nothing more than share my opinions about Toyota Motor Co. and give facts about them. I definitely don't talk BS.

Wasn't Mercedes in the process of developing an engine that doesn't use oil? If so, then this VW engine is useless. Who would buy a car that uses oil over another car that doesn't? Come to think of it, who would buy a VW (except for S4cabriofoxone of course)?

BTW, lexusis350 did you for any chance read the part of the article that said that VW is working on making it run on fuel that is basicaly "trash scraps" that sure doesn't seem like oil to me. Please read the article next time before attempting at making a witty comment.

I did read the article and I must resolute to my first argument...Why buy a car that takes anything at all for fuel verses a car that doesn't?

Excellent idea, a car with no fuel. Flistones, here we come to the stone age. Better start working out. The car with no fuel will rule the world in no time.

VW can definately put technology that some have thought about and make it work perfectly and affordable. Case in point DSG and FSI direct injection. Audi used DSG in its race cars 20 or so year ago (so did Porsche) but now VW and Audi were the first to use DSG/S-Gear (twin clutch automated manual) in mass produced vehicles that are truly affordable.
VW has also put FSI direct injection on just about all of its brands. Sure Mitsu might have used it before, but VW was the first one to put it on most of its engine and get major benifits from it. Lexus is using it now, several years after VW has had it. VW/Audi were the first ones to put FSI (direct injection) on a turbocharged engine with the racing Audi R8. VW and Audi were the first to put FSI (direct injection) on a turbo, Pontiac, Mazda and BMW have followed with their own direct injection on a turbocharged engine.
So, what do I see. VW and Audi getting great technology on their vehicles (mass producing and making that technology affordable). That is sure looks good enough for me. Sure, CCS technology has been worked with (most likely) by every brand in a lab setting . BUT it has never been put on a production vehicle, IN FACT VW is the first brand that has advanced CCS technology that it felt comfortable in letting the press drive a car powered by a CCS engine. Sure technically they didn't invent CCS technology (they actually might have, or someone might have made a 1 piston CCS engine 50 or more years ago) but VW will most likely be the first brand with a CCS engine. Which really counts more IMO.

VW didn't use FSI first, but Mitsubishi? VW just put it on all their models etc etc so good for them.
Hmmm, can you replace FSI with hybrid?
CCS might be good as long as hydrogen isn't out by 2020. No hydrogen geyser, well, I don't see any garbage fuel (or even E85) at the gas pumps either.

Nope, because the hybrid's fuel economy is determined mostly by the piston engine. Let's consider:
Lexus LS 460 with its very excellent V8 (using direct injection) gets 27 mpg on the highway. It has 380 hp.
Lexus GS450h, only 28 on the highway because its piston V6 is not as advanced as the one in the LS 460. Game over.

Yes, the Beetle is quite an embarassing car. Too bad it was good enough to sell from 1938 to 2003 and have 30 or so million copies made. That is like saying that the Ford Model T is a POS. Yes, it probably is, but its significance is higher than Mt. Everest to the automotive world. Same with the Beetle. You Toyota fanboys are freaking funny.

Do you remember the article saying the Corolla sold nearly 2x the cars in half the time? (Top 10 cars of all time, in sales)
What does your engine comparison have to do with this article? Newer engines are better, thanks Einstein. When the GS gets the more advanced engine, you'll see the mpg go up.
Jeep's 4.7L V8 has the same mileage as its 20 year-old 4.0L I6.

Many different cars have been sold under the Corolla brand. And it has been out for 40 years, the Beetle only really sold in "full force" for 30 or so years. VW sucessfully replaced the Beetle in 1974 with the Rabbit/Golf and at that time basically halted the production of the Beetle in all but Mexico.
