Volvo celebrates 80 years and a new model!
The new Volvo C30 comes in on Volvo's 80th Birthday. Most people are not aware of the C30's interesting past lineage. Volvo had a hatch in the 80's and 90's that was not on our US shores.

The Volvo 480 is the predecessor to the C30 and is very 80's in a VW Scirocco kind of way. It's predecessor was the P1800.

Volvo's I think have been pretty good in catering to a niche market of consumers who look for safety. Even though they have many competitors now in terms of safety I still respect them as a company. They do more than just produce automobiles. They have trucks, buses, construction vehicles, & Volvo Aero which produces high tech components for rocket & airplane engines. They are the company that makes up the core of the Euro Space Program I believe. Lots of respectable businesses they are involved with aside from building cars.

That's why I think Volvo is so under-rated. Most people don't know what else they do in terms of engineering. 80 respectable years of services!

I really loved my old S60 T5. It was a fun car that made me feel responsible and all grown up LOL (I was 23 at the time).

The P1800 was one of the nicest sports cars back in the sixties -- I should have bought one then instead of driving cars like the big Imperial and a couple of Ford convertibles. Too bad Volvo never evolved the P1800's basic design and kept it alive to the present day . I would love to own a modern RWD version of this car with Volvo's in-line six cylinder engine.

I agree with what your saying. But Volvo cars has nothing to do with the other businesses you mention-Ford owns the cars bit, the rest is part of a separate Swedish company-they sold the car business in about 1998/99.

Actually Ford only owns 50% of Volvo....it was a 50:50 deal....so Volvo still owns half of the car segment.
