Volvo planning R-line sports packs
Back in April we reported that Volvo would be dropping its ‘R’ performance range at the end of the 2007 model year due to lackluster sales. However, fans of the R range may not have to be sad for long if rumors about a new Volvo sports package prove true. Similar to Audi’s S-Line performance upgrades, Volvo is said to be developing its own sport pack to be called the R-Line for the new S40 and V50 models. Read Article

That's almost like assuming you own an M or something cool.

r driver04...actually, I do own an '06 M Roadster as my summer car. You should assume.

If you care to see it... http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/showphoto.php/photo/8778/size/big/cat/

Im also known as MakoBimmer on many BMW websites.

Most will agree with me that 'performance' is not foremost associated with Volvo. They should concentrate on building a better box with wheels.

Sounds like this R-Line is just a rename of the "Dynamic Trim Package" (suspension, wheels, spoiler, body kit, and steering wheel) which will get too easily confused with the "Dynaudio Package" to be available on 2008. Volvo needs to create some consistency on their naming of the latter. "Audio Package" on S80, "Dynaudio Package" on C70, and I understand that to be the name for the upcoming (US) C30 and '08 S40/V50.

It's a real shame that the R line is going away. It's not that people don't want the R in general. I believe that the people attracted to an R want something newer than essentially a 2001 MY car. If you don't think the S40/V50 has been ripe to be made an R, look at the success of the Mazdaspeed3. Imagine a more solid Mazdaspeed3 w/ AWD, more power, and more reliable engine.

BimmerFan, Volvo may not be the first thing that comes to mind with performance, but they certainly have a lot more racing experience than plenty of other car manufacturers. Performance isn't the natural association, but racing and the T5-->R cars have certainly increased awareness and brought a new type of buyer to consider the brand. The R was a type of halo car that helped create an image even when the majority of people don't buy it. It brings in business for other trim levels more than it makes money for R itself. Volvo just never promoted the R correctly, though.

Lexus and Volvo ahead of BMW?

I own a Volvo and regularly drive two Lexus models at work. Good cars. Unless you have a fat ass and need big seats, I can't see an advantage over BMW.

As an "R" owner it would be nice to bring back the R cars. I think MY 2007 may be too soon though. Take a couple years off Volvo and come back with some heat. Die hard R owners will wait.

Ah, your name makes sense now.

V70R was probably the coolest Volvo in the last twenty years. Fast wagons are the best.

Volvo is another make that charges extra for paint colors other than a few standard unpopular colors. I would expect the R badge to be an excuse to suck a lot more money out of the consumer's wallet than the incremental value that the R would offer.
