WOULD YOU BUY A CADILLAC CTS IF YOU COULD GET A TAX BREAK? - And Other Tax Incentives...
Times are tough.  Industries continue to struggle. Housing continues to be a point of contention as declines continue to be reported almost daily.  The US auto industry is hurting as well, sales continue to slide and profits continue to erode, where and when does it stop.

Last week I posed the question of what would you drive if German cars weren’t available, and responses ranged from Ferrari, to Lexus, and even Cadillac, particularly the CTS.

What if buyers were rewarded for buying a domestic car?  Currently tax breaks are available to buyers of Hybrids, and for certain businesses the tax incentives make buying vehicles like the Hummer almost a no brainer.

What if a tax incentive existed that rewarded people who bought domestic.  For the purpose of the discussion, we’ll define domestic as Ford, GM and Chrysler along with their sub brands which are made here in the USA.

Would you take a serious look at a domestic product if such a tax incentive existed?  Would that tax incentive be enough to have you darken the door way of a domestic maker and consider their product?

Take for example the Chevrolet Malibu, not only is it a good looking car, but the build quality and features match those of Honda and Toyota making it a competitive car.  The fact it is a Chevrolet is probably the biggest drawback given the years of crap pumped out by GM.

The Cadillac CTS is another great example of a car that competes with the BMW 5-Series in size, but the BMW 3-Series in price.  Interior wise, the Cadillac beats the BMW 5-Series hands down both in layout and quality of materials.

Would a tax break for purchasing the Cadillac over the BMW, or the Malibu over the Camry or Accord be enough incentive to get people in the door to drive and discover these or other domestic vehicles.

I am not a big fan of taxes, and I am certainly not proposing this as a way to “bail out” the US automakers.  What I am a fan of is an opportunity to be essentially handed back our own money via any and every tax break or incentive available.

So I ask you…

Should buyers of Domestic Cars get a Tax Incentive???

Caddy already cost less, so tax incentives are irrelevant. queation is would you buy it since it does offer good quality and a better price? Screw the incentives, why should it take that to sell an already great car?

Michael Taylor, Is it possible to have an intelligent conversation without your obvious and ignorant ramblings about Lexus and Infiniti?

Both Lexus and Infiniti are great cars, but that is not what is being discussed.

The question posed was, would you consider a domestic car if tax breaks created incentives to do so.

I am confident you know that neither Lexus or Infiniti fall under the heading of domestic, and as such your answer I assume to be, "No."

Telling us yet again of your love of Lexus does nothing to enhance the topic at hand.

@ Agent00J,

You are a better man than I, my friend, because I would not have been as nice with my response to morons like MichaelTaylor.

To answer your question, YES, I would love to have that tax break as long as domestic mfg. continue to improve on their quality top to bottom. Malibu, Aura, G8, 300, Charger, Challenger, Camaro, Sky, Solstice, Fusion and Focus (even though I've never been much of a Ford fan), all nice cars that I would be more interested in owning if we got the tax incentive. Personally, I would like to have a fuel efficient runabout with flexibility so if I was choosing a domestic, I would go with the Pontiac Vibe (too bad it doesn't offer the more fuel efficient engine options or resale value of the car it's derived from, the Toyota Matrix).

On a side note: I think c**ksucking d-bags like Michael Taylor are ruining sites like AutoSpies because they are only here to be disruptive and annoying. I vote to have him and others like him BANNED!

All in favor, say "I"!!!

Well MT obviously likes Japanese cars...no biggie and nothing wrong with that. He makes a few points but Lexus is not the end all of luxury. It is a good brand that wants what the Germans have...desireability and prestige. It will do anything to get it and may screw itself doing it. Cadillac is on the rise and time will tell if it will be what it once was...desireable and prestigious. The old and now new CTS is a great start. The new Escalade ROCKS! But MPG must improve...don't knock its MPG too hard, it is on par or better than the Lexus LX570. The STS execute well too...

Kind of a stupid question considering a lot of people DO buy Cadillacs without tax breaks for doing so. The new CTS is a nice car, lightyears ahead of the previous one.

One thing though -- I've spent a fair amount of time in a new CTS, and I disagree with your statement that it "beats the 5-Series hands down in quality of materials"). It's attractive inside, and I like the hard drive stereo/nav system, but the hard plastic dash top with faux leather covering wasn't nearly as impressive in real life as it is in pictures. To the touch it felt like Cadillac had figured out a way to stitch seams onto a wooden board. It is attractive though, and the rest was fine. It's a good value for someone needing the space of a 5-Series/E-class/A6 without wanting to pay the price for one.

I agree with you regarding the dash stitching on the Cadillac, but the overall quality of the materials I think beats that of the 5-Series (and don't forget that I am a big BMW fan).

The CTS was used as an example, obviously the tax break would extend to cars like the 300C SRT-8 and Corvettes and even Ford Taurus. The point of the question is to get people into domestic showrooms.

It is not a stupid question if you take the ENTIRE domestic offering into account, not just the CTS. The CTS was used simply as an example.

I understand what you're saying, but if the CTS is "just an example" and you want to look across the entire U.S. model lineup, then you might want to change the title of the thread to "Would You Buy an American Car if..." instead of "Would You Buy a Cadillac CTS if..."

This post makes a good point. There are huge business tax breaks for SUVs, but not for regular cars. Frankly it is asinine. I can buy a new Range Rover SC for $94k and get a $38K tax write-off the first year and $21k the second year, etc. But if I purchase a car, the tax write-off is $3k. Doesn't make any sense.

You only get the deduction if you're self employed.

Hey, if they are giving tax credits, how about them giving advertisers tax credits for buying our ads?

Why should the auto manufacturers benefit?

AutoSpies.com is an American business.

That's the dilemma.

If you give it to one, give it to all...

CTS is a fine car, as well as the Malibu... future looks bright for GM. If I had the money, I'd have no problems buy these cars (even without any tax breaks), It just boggles the mind why someone would spend the needless thousands more for a BMW, when the Cadillac, beats it on all accounts - even performance (you get a more powerful engine for the money). But I guess people have blinders on and choose BMW for the marque (what a bunch of superficial posers).

auto001,

Are you implying that BMW doesn't build some of the best cars in the world?

There may be better cars than BMW. But this big, heavy, underpowered car (CTS) with a course-sounding engine when revved isn't it.

You need to get a clue and get with that smooth inline-6. V6? everyone has that. Now an inline-6 is something unique. Something that sets the 3-series apart from all the boring harsh V6s out there. What ever floats your boat I guess.

I definitely want the domestics to have better sales, because I believe they've definitely put in more effort and developed a better product. But a tax incentive is not the answer. It's virtually the same as an import tariff. It would be putting the foreign makes at a competitive disadvantage. Who's to say there wouldn't be any retaliation across the border? A tax on our exports? I honestly think the best solution is to wait it out. American cars are definitely much improved, it will only be a matter of time until the average consumer realizes this and sales pick up. Hopefully it's sooner rather than later, or else it may end up being too late for one or more of the domestic manufacturers.

There are really two parts to Agent00J's hypothetical question:

1) Would a tax incentive make me consider a domestic car when I otherwise wouldn't have? The answer to that is No. I try to keep an open mind about domestics all the time--but if I had decided that I didn't want one, then a tax incentive is very unlikely to change my mind.

2) If I WAS considering domestics and imports, would a tax incentive influence me toward a domestic? The answer to that is: it depends (on why I'm buying, and how big the incentive is).

Tax incentives for consumers to buy domestic cars are absolutely the wrong answer, though, in my opinion. If anything, the government should give the automakers a tax break for each sale that they make...this would incent them to make cars that people actually want (rather than rewarding consumers for consuming something that otherwise might not be appealing, try incenting the domestic automakers to be more competitive and responsive to market demands). Or the government should co-invest with the auto-industry on research & development that helps the country--better safety or fuel-efficiency or eco-manufacturing, etc...this provides benefits for the whole country AND reduces the cost basis for the domestic automakers.

BTW, I would consider a Cadillac CTS even without tax incentives.

Congress should enact this immediately. Allow Americans to write off the entire purchase price of a domestic auto off their income tax. Ford, Chevy or Chrysler.

Times are tough. These cars are good enough for anyone especially since the nation is at war, and solders living at poverty levels are fighting the war. It is time for Americans to get back to basics and forget about status symbols. We are all living beyond our mean, which is why bankruptcy is at record levels.

We have all just become too spoiled on wanting the best.

New York State already charges a few grand in sales tax on new autos, plus endless registration and user fees. Give working families a well deserved break.

Personally, I considered a Caddy in my last car search, and there would certainly have been a price point where I would have purchased it instead of the Lexus I ended up going with. It would just depend on how large the tax break was.

In general, though, the answer is yes: the American government could certainly spur domestic purchases by providing enough tax breaks, and/or tariffs on imports. Other countries might complain about it to the WTO, and our foreign purchases would get more expensive, but it certainly can be done.

I think you really need to look again at what you are stating about the quality of the two GM vehicles mentioned.

Yes. Both the Malibu and CTS have great designs and quality. But to say that the Malibu has the same quality as a Camry or an Accord would be wrong. I would more agree to the fact that the GM has reached the quality levels that were achieved by Honda and Toyota back in 2002 with their then 2002 Camry and 2000 Honda Accord. But to say that it is on par with the current Accord and Camry models would be foolish. Don't get me wrong though. the Malibu is a great vehicle. And really is something that I myself would consider.

The same goes for the Cadillac CTS. Great vehicle as well. But to say that quality matches that of the BMWs is foolish. It may rival that of BMW 3 and 5 series from the past, but not that of the current models. The build quality and material quality exceeds those of GM's Cadillac CTS. Again, same applies to the CTS as well for me. A wonderful vehicle that I truly would consider as well.
