Want a challenging job with an entry level starting salary of over $60G's?
The Spies good friend Commissioner Brown stopped in San Diego last week to give us the heads up...

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joined the CHP family today to kick-off the statewide “Pursue Your Future” recruiting campaign to attract qualified candidates to join the ranks of the state’s premier police force.

"I want to do everything I can to help the California Highway Patrol to recruit the best and the brightest people to keep our state safe and secure," said Governor Schwarzenegger. The Governor's 2006-07 state budget expands the CHP by 240 officers and 173 dispatchers; the largest CHP expansion, not tied to a specific new mission, since the late 1960's.

There is something very basically wrong with a country at the point where a cop has a greater starting salary than most people who take significantly more time earning a 4 year college degree in science and engineering fields (most of whom have a starting salary in the $50k's) - and have to pay for their $100k education on top of that (I bet cop training is paid for by the state). Let me take a guess: there are also far fewer people qualified to earn degrees in electrical engineering etc. than the qualifications required to be admitted to cop school. You'd think that somehow, somewhere along the line money is not entirely being allocated in proportions approaching any semblance of proportionality.

Just as China and India are overtaking us in science and engineering, this country spends an inordinate amount on building up a police state. Someone please explain to me how this is going to benefit our future economy.

Hmmm, but how many times do those college grads place their life on the line?

There is compensation for education and then there is compensation for risk.

ion britain, we are also suffering from a complete lack of plumbers/electricians/engineers.
we import the plumbers/builders etc from poland and latvia though, which is fine.
our engineers come from india and japan.

Your priorities are amazingly skewed. Next time you dial 911 and the police take 30 minutes to get to your house because there aren't enough officers on the beat, you're going to scream and yell why there aren't enough officers and the response will be, "who's crazy enough to be a policeman only to be shot at for $30k a year?"

A restaurant manager without any formal education makes $30k a year and he doesn't get shot at.

Police officers hold the fabric of your neighborhood together. Get a grip on your priorities. I moved to my neighborhood and paid more for my house simply because we have 3 cop cars making regular rounds around town all night long; I don't want my kids getting run over by drunk drivers or killed by gang shooting.

People don't realize the importance of cops until they need one. Kids don't have to be engineers, they can be master chefs in NYC and get paid $150k. Why don't you start complaining that lawyers are completely useless, even though there are too many of them and they average $90k salaries.

The Job Description is "HIGHWAY PATROL"

Please tell me what it is Highway Patrolmen do All Day other than Park in Hard To See Spots and Generate Revenue For The State through Speeding Fines

I find it Interesting that People like yourself are so shortsighted that you'd blindly agree to the Notion that more Police Officers would translate to better Response Times in the case of an Imergency, They Do Not, Good Management will ensure Efficient Use of Resources and Good Management would Redeploy all those Drones parked up on Highways and make them do some Real Police Work.

Go to Any European Country (They All Have Much Higher Speeds Of Travel On Their Highways) and you would not see one Tenth the amount of Highway Ticketing Machines as you do in North America, yet they somehow manage to keep their Freeway Deathtoll Rates way below those of North America and the Officers that would have been Wasted on Watching FreeWay Travel are actually being used in the Cities.

Please try not to blindly Accept everything told to you by the Government.

I dont know where you live, but 60K for starting pay is not much at all on the West Coast. Police officers are in a noble, honorable and hazardous profession. I thank them every chance I get for the work they do. I provide medical care to the asswipes they bring into our county jail. If you knew some of the warts of society these officers bring in, you would thank them too for the work they do to provide a safe community.

Its also a lesson in supply and demand. A 4 year grad with a degree in history is not much in demand and cant expect high wages...meet some of these people at your favorite restaurant waiting tables. A 4-8 year grad with a degree in any medical field is in demand, thus higher wages. Society also places value on certain professions that may not require any college...ie: entertainment industry, sports. Who knew that one could make millions throwing a ball around on a field for a few hours. I wish I knew how to throw a football in college and grad school!

The salary is directly proportional to the revenue they generate.

If they sit around all day playing with their radar guns and nailing taxpayers for speeding, they're bound to generate enough to more than cover their salary, retirment, Arnold's new electric Hummer, etc. . .

It all comes down to how much you think someone to be paid for risking their life everyday to keep yours safe. People should be compensated fairly for doing so.

$60K is a little depressing... my car costed more than that.

Really makes you think.

How would you be able to support a family?

That's right, you wouldn't.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
According to the Bureau of Labor, the average US salary is $36,764. Well below $60,000.
Your idea of the rest of the United States is flawed. (The 90% rest of the USA)

People have in fact sued the police specifically because they called them while they were being burglarized, the police did not send anyone to help, and in some of the cases people were murdered. So you are quite delusional if you believe the police is there to protect you.

What do I do for protection? I own a gun, that's what.

"What do I do for protection? I own a gun, that's what."

now that is an american answer.
aren't houses with guns in them loads more likely to have a death?

honestly, with a burglar, he is likely to be an oppurtunist, so don't "jump" him, as he will panic and lash out. HARD. there have been many cases of people catching burglars, chasing, the buglar then paniking, and beating them to near death. the adrenalin does it, think how angry and enraged you are, you feel invincibles, the burglar gets the same rush from fear, so suddenly feels strong too.
NEVER CONFRONT, that's the message we're being told in the uk.

I know the MESSAGE we are told in the UK and i have to admit i don't care for it. I would confront any intruder into my Home and while i do not own a Gun (Got into Serious Trouble last time I owned one in NY) I would confront them with the Intention of causing them Harm if they did not Exit with Haste & None of my Property : )
