Watch out BMW M3: 2008 Audi RS4 to get 450 horsepower?
In June, citing AutoCar as the source, we reported that the 414 horsepower producing Audi RS4 is out of production. Apparently, that was a false rumor. Confirmed by Patrick Hespen, Audi’s Media Relations and Motorsport Specialist, that rumor was completely untrue.
There will be a full build of the 2008 model year RS4 sedan, and production is still continuing. Audi has indeed said that the RS4 will have a 2-yr model run, 2008 being that second year. Well Audi has something up its sleeves for 2008...

If they sacrifices the FE and emission a little bit more, why not? M3 does worse at both.

100 horses per litre used to be the magic number but today we have variable valve timing, more precise fuel delivery and even bettter friction-reducing engine oils. If you are prepared to spend more money, then lighter titanium pistons and rods can be used to make it even easier to achieve higher RMP and hence more power.

Right. The 335i already beat out the RS4 according to Car & Driver, so the M3 should have no problem, regardless of the extra 30hp (if it is true).

henbmw, EVERYONE knows C/D is biased towards BMW, whether they're BMW fans or not. I love BMWs, but I also love Audis, and I know that the 335i can't stand a chance against an RS4 in the general ownership experience- driving fun. What a ridiculous comment. It may be better around a track, but that's not unexpected. The RS4 is better than the E46 M3 around a track, but the E92 has improved greatly, and the 335i is just about as good as the E46 in all areas- some areas, better.

Go ahead, find 20 articles awarding BMW's because 18 of them would most likely be the 3-series. What you don't seem to understand is a magazine loving a certain model doesnt translate to bias over a whole brand. I've showed you that they don't favor 4 of BMW's models, and if you ignore that then that's abiding ignorance at its best.

The BMW M3 has already lost to the RS4 in two comparison tests, but it has also defeated the RS4 in two comparison tests (EVO and Car & Driver) the latter wasn't a comparison, but C&D said they preferred the M3 to the RS4.
Either way both these cars are on even terms. The BMW is clearly the better track car and overall performer, meanwhile the RS4 is a more complete package in terms of daily driving experience.
I think this boost to 450 horsepower is true, it will be Audi's way of foreshadowing what is to come in the RS5 which will take that 450 horsepower in the upcoming 2008 RS4 and upgrade it by another 25 to 475 horsepower.
Audi already has confirmed the 580 horsepower for the upcoming RS6.
Ingolstadt is making sure that they will certainly not lose in the horsepower race or overall everyday driving experience to BMW's M, even though the M cars may have the advantage at the track, it is Audi's RS cars that provide the best overall daily driving experience.

What is Audi going to tell their customers that have bought the 2007 RS4 with the lesser engine? this is an idiotic move, if true. By doing this, doesnt really help customer loyalty. Screw the people the year before. Mercedes did this with the E55, and their was alot of negativity about the switch to the larger engine in 2003. It just dprectiates a car, that shouldnt have to worry about it. My advice, just keep the same engine and then when the new body style comes out then upgrade the engine. Otherwise you are going to screw over the current customer base.

What? People mad because the next model has more power? E55 owners mad that the next E55 had more power? That's about as stupid as getting mad at Dell because the computer you bought 6 months ago is not as good as the ones they're offering today for the same price. At some point, customers have to jump in. They all know it. It's the reason why cars depreciate. Should we just halt development and technology to make previous customers happy?

BMW4me4ever, the other side of the coin is that luxury features have trickled down to lesser cars and it's getting cheaper and cheaper to buy a car with all the amenities. Cars have virtually become a commodity so who cares if technology moves forward and cars like the E-class continuoulsy improve their engines. So many new features have been added to the 2008 C-Class that I would not even consider spending the extra money for an E. The next gegeration of the E may end up being so close o the S-class that the next E may be the best value in the Mercedes stable.

The M3 CSL will be at least $95K. That is approximately $30K more than a $66K msrp RS4.
The difference in price between the upcoming M3 CSL and the Audi RS4 will be substantially greater than the previous E46 M3 at $49K and the current RS4 at $66K.

This could very well be true. Why wouldn't Audi upgrade the horsepower.
After all Mercedes did it with the E55 when they switched it over to the E63.
BMW is guilty of doing it when the switched the 325 to the 328 and the 330 to the 335. BMW also switched the 545 and 745 to the 550 and 750 respectively.
I'm pretty sure this is a true statement and Audi is going to up the horsepower further to compete with the upcoming Mercedes C63 AMG and foreshadow what the RS5 will be capable of since it will have upwards of 470 horsepower.

And yes, the RS4 is definitely quicker than the old M5. It is actually more similar in essence and character to the old M5 than the new M5 and M3 are- Audi has stolen some of BMW's magic.

Very interesting.
I remember a conversation that I had this spring with one of Audi's German bigshots. I'm sorry I don't remember his name, but he has the ear of Rupert Stadler on a daily basis if that gives you some idea.
Anyway, once again, he was asking how to "wake up" the American marketplace. He was sort of complaining to me that they feel they have tried everything, better marketing, better safety, better reliability and only modest results. I turned to him, looked him strait in the eye and said, "why don't you try this? Instead of just matching what the others are doing in terms of performance, try beating them!"
It seems like maybe he heard me.

Audi is a driving force. They are very aggresive and methodical.Their profits and sales have been steadily improving and will continue. They seem to be covering the market place with the right product. The S5 and A5 coupes were deliberatley toned down in their suspension settings so that the cars understeer more then they should. Audi's marketing people feel that for the majority of their customers this suspension balance works. They will not hold back on the RS5 as their is room to dial in much more nuetral handling. I have no doubt that Audi is capable of building a car to exceed the capabilties of anything BMW builds.Right now their R8 is rated a better drivers car then Porsche's 911.So 450 HP out of their 4.3 should be a no brainer. Remember that the same engine that is going into the cut price Lamborgini Gallardo.

There have been no test or head to head test on the New M3.period.
The only magazine that used any testing equipment during the Spain ride of the New M3 was Car and Driver.

Looks like the M3 compares to the Audi R8 performance.
Everything else that you've read is journalist speculation as no test equipment was used.

I agree totally with you whatt. The only actual test of the M3, was done by Car & Driver in Spain . " the time of 4.4 seconds to 60 mph. That's .4 seconds quicker that the last M3, despite a slipery road surface and hurried test schedule. Expect the 2008 to be even quicker when we get a chance to conduct a full raod test." Car & Driver Sept 2007 pg 52 ..... In that same test 300ft skidpad was .94g which is a rocking grip ... It blew thru the 1/4 mile in 12.9 seconds at 111mph .... The M3 is and always will be the standard...

Yeah, right, in US.
Too bad there some magazines in UK that have different opinions. Too bad you can only accept reviews where the M3 wins. Cause lately it wasn't the case ...
Anyway, if the new M3 follows the old m3 and it will stay 7 years unchanged then .. should I continue? Since it's no better than CURRENT competition (don't forget the RS4 but ALSO the C63 AMG), it will be completely dead in no more than 2 years. If this article is true maybe even less than that.

Rg .. what are you talking about? In the other tests that they compared the M3 to the RS4, if you look at the figures, they drove the car and used the factory specs. You missed that point. Car & Driver has the only test, even thought they said that they were rushed. The M3 is the benchmark and always will be. The Audi group knows this and is going to up the horsepower just to try and be competitive. Only problem is the M3 will still be a better Sports Car and will cost less ...

Yes. I built my Carrera 4S Cabriolet online- $113K. That's not even CLOSE to loaded! None of the frivolous options like the painted seats or colored gauges. I wouldn't be surprised if you could even get a Cayman S up to the R8's base price.
So no, realistically, a 911 Turbo with all of the R8's goodies would run you $150K without tax, gas guzzler or destination.

Get ready for the Audi model onslaught to continue. With the A5 and S5 coupes coming along with the Q5 and Q3 SUVs and the hot-rods RS6 and RS5 and a new completely redesigned A4 this fall Audi is going to tear things up in terms of sales growth and profitibility.
The Quattro GmbH subsidiary is already on a tear with the amazing RS4, even better R8 and upcoming RS5 and RS6 which will clearly have enough horsepower to hang with and likely defeat the M5 and E63.
These BMW fanboys can say what they want, but the facts are clear:
Audi is growing much faster than BMW and MB at the moment and has been growing much faster for the past 5 years.
Audi is in the middle of a model onslaught and the upcoming A4 will be the cornerstone of Audi's improved handling dynamics goal which should its way into the upcoming A6, A7 and A8 models.
People can say what they want but from going almost out of the U.S. market just 20 years ago, Audi has turned the clock in overdrive as it powers its way towards the top.

Please don't forget removing the AC, the navigation, electric windows, rear chairs and the spare tire.
Or you know what? Just buy 2 Corvettes, you win over CSL anytime for that price, you'll also get AC inside.

Both M3 and RS4/5 are great cars and keep getting better. If you prefer AWD and less oversteer "FUN" then go with an Audi. If you like to turn the traction/stability off and wag the tail and drift, then get an M3.
Personally (my tastes) is that BMW is now building ligher, more nimble cars than Audi, with an edge on driver involvement, and with the free maintenance program, BMWs are cheaper to own. Thus, my vote is the M3 - and why I own one.

I know BMW makes such a big deal out of this whole 50/50 weight thing, but does it really make it a better car?
Porsche is probably the most successful racing brand in the world. They are anything but 50/50.
If you look at modern F1 cars, even with the engine in the rear, they add weight to the front to give it positive front bias. Why?
I think the 50/50 thing is more marketing than fact.

No single measure tells the whole story. The RS4 and the M3 are so close that it takes an expert driver to split the two apart. AWD almost makes up for the Audi's front-heavy balance, and both could use a diet.
If you really want a phenomenal sports coupe, Porsche's 997 handles better than any road-legal BMW. Of course, the BMW handles better than 90% of the other vehicles on the road. In the end, both do the job well and personal priorities dictate what one should buy.
My recommendation is that if you live in a snow-free climate and can't afford a Porsche, get the M3. If you need a sportscar for all seasons, either the Carrera 4 or the RS4 are unstoppable. ...or simply get a motorcycle for summer and an Audi for winter.
I get so sick of hearing people claim their favorite is better. You have to buy what works best for your needs and your budget. No brand or model can ever be the "best" in everything.

all this power and what for? no one will be using it. reduced weight is much more practical for not only speed and handling, but fuel economy too. make a 2500lbs or lighter car with 300-350hp and it wont matter if your 2 ton RS4 or M3 has 450hp.
yes, ditch the electric seats, the sunroof, make everything aluminum (or in BMWs case, plastic), electric sunshades, 6 in dash cd player, the 17 million airbags, electric tilt and telecope. these are just off the top of my head, but it can go on for so much more. lighter car means smaller brakes = more weight lost. having a drivers car doesnt mean sacrificing luxury. but 2 tons worth of motors where you really only need 3 (i include the side mirrors)?

Well, what you're missing is, a lot of people want/need all of those luxuries. What makes the RS4 so special is that it's a perfect combination of performance and opulence, with a beautifully finished interior and the latest luxury features, but with incredible performance and tactile feel at the same time. Without the fancy features, it wouldn't be such an amazing feat of engineering.
Also- a 2,500lb car with 350hp would be insanely fast. It might not even be street-legal. The Lotus Elise "gets by" while weighing more than that and having only 180hp. 0-60? 4.8 seconds.

no need to watch out.. csl will anihilate this FWD crap. the extra power will only magnify this POS' shortcomings.. i.e numb steering, huge weight on the front wheels and poor architecture using older non weight saving technology. yuck.. rather drive a yugo!

Uhuh, yeah, you're 100% right as usual.
Interesting that BMW needs the $100K CSL, which has no air conditioning, to "anihilate" the much less-expensive, more luxurious RS4 which does not need a lightweight counterpart to whip the M3.

I've not yet drive the RS4, but I have driven the S4. I may not be an expert, but I know how to turn hard. And when I turn the Audi hard in a corner, it friggen PLOWS no matter how much gas I give it.
Maybe the RS4 is improved, but this AWD format isn't nearly as fun as a WELL BALANCED rear-wheel drive car.

"I've not yet drive the RS4, but I have driven the S4."
This explains the rest of your post.
I am an S4 owner and lover, but even I know that the S4 is no match for the incredible RS4 in terms of driving fun/dynamics/driver appeal. It doesn't sound to me like you've read a single RS4 review- it sounds like you just assume that the RS4 is a faster S4. You are so, so, so wrong. Just go out and drive one before I murder you...

Summing it up:
"The RS4 is much more than a standard S4 with the wick turned up. This car has been comprehensively re-engineered to deliver a much more dynamic driving experience."

s4.. as usual.. you are wrong...the m3 will beat the crap out of the FWD rs4 anyday.. the csl is just a very specail car that will not only bludgeon the rs4, but will do that to most feraris and lambos not to mention your POS r8 on any track or street. keep loving your jetta.. for most of us, you guys are just poor BMW wannabes constantly justifying your purchase..tsk tsk

Uhuh, sure, right, but you still didn't read my post. BMW needs a $100,000 track-day special to beat Audi's $70K luxury sport sedan. Think about that, you idiot.

and I wonder why you people are arguing... everyone buy what you want. It's not like you are going to change anyone's opinion. Why dont you like at the facts from all sides?

And this is such an obvious solution, but nobody takes it to heart.
As much as I love the 335i coupe, the new M3 isn't doing much for me. On the other hand, I saw a black RS4 in the city today, and wow, is that car hot!
