Guess I am still missing the point when the article states that it does not handle as well as a G37, or that the VQ engine is better with its higher tach, or that it is a lot slower, or if you shift the Genesis aggressively it cuts off the fuel, or where they stated the Genesis is not the car the G37 is. If I had a choice, there is no doubt the G37 is the better choice here. As stated by most car fanatics here already, the Genesis is a nice coupe for someone who can't quite afford a G37 or 3 series, but see no since in trying to put this car into a battle with the G37 and 3 series, because it can't compete with them. I think Hyundai did a great job of making a product to compete against the Eclipse, Mustang, and Soltice, which is where their sales will come from.

I would spend the extra for the 335i over the G37 but not the extra for the G37 over the Genesis Coupe.

BMW will be slightly tougher for Hyundai but if anyone can do it...

Actually it won't be the Genesis Coupe that dethrones the 3 series but a sportier version of the Genesis sedan.

i've got to be honest, when i viewed the article, for about a minute or two i thought the pictures showed the genesis in red and black. apparently, the red car is an infiniti (the red pic above threw me off).

i like them both, very much. i'd drive either. prefer the g37, though.

what i don't understand is why the lexus IS coupe wasn't included in this test...oh, wait...thats right...jeez

B7FAN, we are already there. Where have you been? Hyundai/KIA has severely Undercut the Japanese, and as Japanese products get much more expensive due to the won/dollar flucutation frenzy going on right now, they are even more screwed. This time next year, even for a base Fit you will definately have to fork out $15-$16K minimum.

Gen Coupe gets the 335 job done without the need to pay $20k to make up for inadequacies. Plus better warranty, gas mileage, reliability, and exclusivity.

The article indicates that the G37 is slightly better in driving characteristics but "only slightly".It does have slightly better interior controls and better interior plastics. The Genesis has better seats. The G37 is a half a second quicker to 60 and does 1 MPH better in the slalom. Further the Genesis does have that engine cut off to protect against over revving that the G37 does not have. So you have to conclude that the G37 is a slightly better driving car overall. The question is this.Is the G37 worth a 3rd more then the Genesis coupe? The answer has to be a definate "NO".The Genesis Coupe is an amazing effort for Hyundai and does apparently compete with the G37 even if it loses. It's got to be the best bang for the buck.

The Genesis Coupe has a LOT of trade offs vs the G37. If you don't have the money ... guess what? You go with the Genesis, its a good car for the cash, but not great. If you can cover the costs and "step it up", then Infiniti is the way to go or BMW / Merc for that matter.

Why is the Hyundai being compared to the Infiniti G37? Is it because its now all the rage to compare Hyundai to only luxury brands?

Nissan's Altima coupe will kick the Genesis' ass at an even lower price.

btw, teh G37's grabby brakes means it has better brakes.

The Genesis can't even beat a '97 Supra TT (which pulls a .90+g, 0-60 in 5 sec and a 1/4 mile of 13 sec). It wasn't until 1997 when Porsche finally beat the Supra's skidpad with their GT.
btw, even the non-turbo Supra's are faster than the Genesis. Toyota may not make then anymore, but you could probably pick up a used one for 1/2 the price of the Hyundai.

The article in this forum lists the Genesis coupe 0-60 at 6.4sec and the G37 at 5.7sec.
I guess you didn't notice Honda and Toyota on Ward's top 10 list too? Both have been on the list many times before. Hyundai is just a shadow, following and copying whatever Toyota/Honda do. Anyway, Nissan's 3.5L engine may not have won an award, but it's still powerful enough to beat the new Genesis/Tiburon.

Here's Edmund's review of the Altima 3.5 SE, 0-60 in 6.4sec and for a coupe, a good everyday driver and priced the same as the Genesis/Tiburon.

From what I gathered, my Hypothesis is that magazines such and JD Power, Autospies,etc... give an Unfair Bias to Japanese Auto Makes, yetin Terms of TSBs over a 20 year period, even the Chevy Aveo is more reliable than the Japanese cars in its class. These magazines give pro Japanese Bias, yet the facts show that Some of the American small cars were good. Like the old Ford Escort, and the South Korean makers have had a constant small car reliablity superiority over the Japanese that doesnt get published. Its been like that for years now. When I get done my study, I might make an article of my results here on Autospies.

My Assessment, Honda Reliablity is way overrated, and Hyundai Reliablity is way underrated. I think Hyundai is being discriminated against, for one simple reason, they are Koreans.

The Hyundai Pony was a magnificent car, right down to every last rusty part. As for recent cars, every Hyundai since 2003 has been recalled because of their garbage transmissions and other assorted design flaws.

Deal with it, Hyundai is getting a free ride by auto journalists because they've been ignored for so long and you can't take the fact I'm pointing out the Genesis is nothing special, its just the same old at the usual Korean discounted price.

btw foez, you keep on yapping about the Eclipse. Suddenly the Mitsubishi eclipse is in the same category as the G37 since you're comparing it with the Genesis/Tiburon which apparently is in the luxury class now.

As for Nissan having crap quality, not arguing with you there. Did you not notice I left them out of the winner's list? You conveniently ignored that the the two real Japanese companies demolished Hyundai. It's pretty funny when the Koreans can't even beat Chevrolet.

Hyundai just got my respect with the recent offerings. It sounds like they still have few minor things to work out, but that gap between Japanese aren't that big as it used to be. I was not, and still not fan of Hyundai but let's just say I am becoming a fan of Genesis.

2008 comes after 2003, which means Hyundai's reliability/quality has gone down or they can't keep up with Honda/Toyota.
I repeat, it is not 2003 so move on and get over it, Hyundai can only compete on low prices.

Bring in the Nissan Altima 3.5 with its lower price and equal performance and watch Hyundai's advantage disappear. Then again, can't have Hyundai competing on equal footing now can we? G37 has better performance than the Hyundai, learn to deal with that too.

fuel pump problems may cause engines to cut-out during operation or cause failure to start.
faulty airbag sensor may not detect children in front seat.

No surprise Hyundai is up there since their cars (esp the minivans) are just copies of those hated Japanese. The Echo and Yaris had no recalls from 2003 to 2006, the latest and only recall involves replacing sound insulators in the seatbelts.

Why don't you bump it up a class and look at the wonderful list of Elantra recalls. The Corolla hasn't had a recall sine 2006,can't say that about the Elantra. It just gets worse for Hyundai the bigger the class of vehicle (see my previous links).

Before you proclaim the overall total, this site lists everything that each company makes, so Honda's motorcycles are included (they even list some Toyota JDM only models for some reason).

It's pretty easy to make problem free cars when all you do is copy once the creators work out all the bugs.

I will say this though, the Genesis won't be having the same transmission recalls as the rest of the Hyundai lineup, they purchased a ZF tranny for the Genesis (same as BMW and someone else).

Why are BMW's prices creeping into Toyota territory then? A Camry XLE can cost just as much as a BMW 323i (now that BMW is giving away free auto trans). I won't even bother mentioning Toyota's higher financing rates (in Canada).
As for immitation, I see the new 7 is following nicely in the footsteps of the LS. If not for the 5-series nose, you'd mistaken it for an LS.
Then there's MB dropping their distinct quad-rounded headlamps in favor of Lexus' squared pair on the GS. The leader has now become the follower. The new C's lines, as nice as they are, look remarkably like the Cadillac CTS' (the Germans are even copying the yanks now).

We can talk about how the Germans and Koreans copy all day and who has what recalls, but the bottom line is, Hyundai needs lower prices to sell because they don't offer the market anything that isn't already present.
Hyundai's probably receivingo so much praise inorder to get everybody's minds off of the big 3 and the crappy auto market.

huu look at the webite from the government. You know what, youre undebateable. You lie in front of my face despite the facts. You bought that unfortunate Tibby from your Brother didnt you? Or better yet, you saw him work for 2 or 3 years to save the money for it? I think you come in here to make fun of Hyundai, and you have a vindictive quality behind it, by posting facts based upon little susbtance. Facts to judge quality such buyer perception slaces that rate quality, as opposed to real hard facts such as recalls. People have a high opinon of VW, however their cars true reliablity states otherwise. You're the kind of buyer who judges a cars quality on whether it has HIDs, faster to 60 times. Hyundai and Toyota have been equal the last 2 years in the compact segment according to your gov't posts. Fine. What's the gov't say about every other segment? Probably not so flattering of Hyundai, that's why you keep ignoring my links that say everything else in Hyundai's lineup has issues, more so than Toyota, Honda or the Americans.

I know quality from experience. The sunroof on my cousins Tiburon (1st year gotta-have syndrome) broke the first week (control module shorted out). My mother's friend had a 2001 Kia Rio sedan (budget Hyundai) that had the transmission go after 3 months, the replacement transmission went too after the warranty expired (100,000km really isn't that much), now it just sits at her house rusting because the repair costs more than the car is worth.

Actually, my brother has a 2001 Celica (no problems) and an A6, no issues. My Jeep was the last MY before a redesign so its major components (engine, suspension, chassis and trans) are perfect. The sunroof also still works after 5 1/2 years :)

So, what's the gov't say about Hyundai and anything not in the compact class?

Yeah, I make fun of Hyundai because they think offering a lower price suddenly makes their cars more luxurious. If they're going to copy Toyota with Lexus, then they should atleast copy the part where Lexus shook up the industry by offering "new and improved" for less. It's plainly obvious Hyundai has the "for less" part down, maybe they should try "new and improved" sometime.

It's a pretty bad auto year when Hyundai wins an award for doing EXACTLY the same thing everyone else is doing.

btw, the only difference between the Genesis and my pick Avalon (aside from RWD/FWD and optional V8) are 1" bigger wheels and HID headlights. What was that you were saying about buying a car simply because its got HIDs?

The Accord and Corolla only got a pass, becuase our cars here in America were so shity. Now with the South Korean competition they are going to have to nring the quality up on those New Civics.

The Accord is a car that rides nice, but as you can see from my stats, its absolute rubbish. If I had an Elantra that age it would be hard for me to get parts at the junk yard. If I had a 13 year old Accord on the other hand, I can get parts like crazy at a junk yard. The same with Accents, and they sold 1 million of those cars during the first gen in America.

Boohoo foez, facts are facts and Hyundai is 2nd rate. They can lower their prices all they want, they'll get lumped in with GM/Ford/Chrysler where people won't even look at the car unless its $5000 cheaper than the competition. Actually, I think thats already happened with most Korean exports.

Wow, can't believe people argue of stuff like this. At the end of the day the Genesis is a new version of the Tiburon, it is a nice car that will compete against the Eclipse, Mustang, Soltice, etc. The G37 outperforms and looks like a sports car. In the end a true car enthusiats will always favor the ultimate performer, in this case being the G37. The Genesis coupe will do well in the tuner high school and college world. Good job Hyundai, but please stop trying to compete in an arena in which you are obviously outmatched.

Performance, This is for 30-45 year olds who want speed but goodies and dont want to pay much in a more mautrue package. Yet, it will look young enough that wont look like their Dad's sports car (Corvette, Solstice, etc....) Where do you live where people that young can afford $22,000 cars? If they can get a loan for that much, they are probably going to pay $400-$600 a month on it, while they make less than $15 an hour. Actually, most young adults will pay that if they buy a Fully Loaded Accent or Elantra with the crappy Interest rates they get.

Think, logical replacement for 90s Acura Integra esque cult status cari.e. they want that demographic who bought cars like that, i.e young professionals who make $35-$65K about 30-45. Youll see in 10 years, Performance. You might be right about the High School and college kids, but they will surely be buying them second or even third hand, not new.

Now the Veloster=New Tiburon will be something the Young Adults will grab up hotcakes and tune. That 2.0 Turbo in the Nexr Gen Tibby might get 35 MPG in a shooting brake styled car, using the weight of a Next-Gen Accent Platform. They wont state the MPG but I can expect 33-35 MPG out of it.

The Hyundai Motor Company (A South Korean Automaker), a division of Hyundai Inc (A South Korean car Industrial Conglomerate) is 44 years old. Their first cars were Ford Cortinas they built for the Asian and Latin American markets under a Ford Subcontract. They started to buid their own cars in 1982 with the Hyundai Pony, and in 1984 exported their first cars over to North America via their first North American assembly plant in Quebec. In 1986 Hyundai introduced the Excel for the United States. The car's intial $5500 price, along with its 33 MPG fuel economy sold 161,000 models in 6 weeks. That same year Popular mechanics called the Little Excels the best product of the year. However, Quality problems made the companys image suffer, and in the future even though Hyundai quality has surpassed its japanese rivials on most scales of measuring quality. Ignorant people like yourself still think they are the POS Excels that came out in 1986. I'm done with the history lesson, go read up about it yourself.

Thats just Industrial conglomerate. By the way, They build Ships, Trailers for Tractor Trailers, Construction Equipment, and Cargo Containers, as well as cars. Hyundai owns KIA motors as well, in which they purcahsed in the 1998 Asian Finacial crisis. They are also the worlds 5th largest Automaker. Hyundai is becoming a near Luzury brand the likes of SAAB (It aspires to be like Acura), While KIA is now positioned to be Hyundais version of Honda. With massive exponential growth in the Chinese and Indian markets (over 200,000 cars a month both countires combined), and steady market share increases in the US market, Hyundai is well positioned to be the Worlds 3rd largest Automaker in 10 years.

By the way, in my study, I found out that the Sonata is a pretty solid car for Hyundai, but the 2006 model had a lot of unnecessary kinks in it it for me. I never understood the Acolades for the Sonata, but thats just me. Then again in the boring Humdrum daddy sedan world, the Sonata is where you want to be.

No, the Accord and Camry is where Hyundai wants to be, unfortunately for them they're just always a generation behind (tends to happen when your innovation consists of merely waiting and copying).

Young professionals who just got their first paycheque won't be buying Hyundai's, they'll be racing out to lease the cheapest BMW they can find (or paying back their student loans).

35-40 is nearing mid-life crisis mode. Who the hell is going to buy a Hyundai to show women how potent they are?

We already know alot of N.Americans buy purely on price, the true acid test for Hyundai is if Koreans will buy these socalled luxury cars. FOBs won't give up their leased BMW's just because Hyundai says its now a luxury car maker.

Don't know if you've sat in a Genesis but aside from the decent leather, the design of the interior is far from the entry-lux segment. You'd have a hard time saying its even close to Toyota. The so-so materials is brought down a notch because of the crap design of the dash/centre console (the buttons look like they're off a cheap CD player) and ugly steering wheel.

btw, Feb09 stats show the 4yo Avalon sold 2000 units, Hyundais' super luxury COTY sold 1200. A rather limp result considering all the free hype Hyundai has been given.

Am I the only one that thinks naming this probably nice car a Genesis is crazy?

The 4 door Genesis is a nice priced luxury car. This thing which looks nothing like it at all and certainly has a way different karma has the same name! Cheapens the four door IMHO.

G37 coupe and 4 door - same car except for number of doors - at least they look like siblings
Genesis coupe and 4 door - don't even look like same brand.

WTF - Names are cheap why mis-use one?
