What Is Your Favorite Color For A Car? We Have The Top Picks for 2007
Around the globe, silver is at the top of the charts as the most popular color for 2007 cars... but other colors are gaining on the perennial leader.

According to the annual automotive color popularity data released today by PPG Industries -- the world's leading manufacturer of transportation coatings -- silver is losing some steam as black closes in on the long-time favorite. In addition, brighter hues such as blue, red and niche market colors seem primed for resurgence.

Globally, silver held the top position as the most popular car color at 31.5 percent (down from 33 percent in 2006). Black jumped to 18 percent (from 15.4 percent in 2006) to take second place, followed by white (12.5 percent), blue (12.4 percent), red (8.8 percent), naturals (gold, orange and brown tones, 6.6 percent), other/niche market colors (5.9 percent) and green (3.8 percent).

In North America, silver also held the top spot over other vehicle colors with 22 percent (down two percent from last year). White, another automotive palette staple, was the second most popular North American color for 2007 with 16 percent. Black came in third at 15 percent -- up two percentage points from last year -- followed by red (13 percent), blue (12 percent), naturals (10 percent), other/niche market colors (6 percent) and green (5 percent).

"Silver is popular with consumers and automakers because it accentuates the styling of a vehicle and looks modern while also having a high resale value," said Jane E. Harrington, PPG manager, color styling, automotive coatings. "We're looking at new interpretations to emerge in tinted silvers and charcoal shades. In addition, hue-shifting pigments can really make silvers look unique."

The rising popularity of black, white and other colors stems from the fashion and interior design industries, Harrington said. "Today's consumers are aware of trends and design, and they expect to see that reflected in the vehicles they buy."

Harrington added that automakers realize the right color "can get you noticed," and said a survey PPG conducted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit showed more than 65 percent of consumers surveyed said they would select one vehicle over another if more color choices were available. "Consumers want choices, and that will lead to a more colorful automotive future."

Color trends for 2010 - 2011 model years

Looking beyond 2007, the colorists of the PPG Global Design and Color Marketing Team examined cultural and lifestyle trends to create cutting-edge color palettes and special effects that meet automakers' goals for brand identity, durability, workability and cost effectiveness. For the 2010 - 2011 model years, they have developed 105 exterior colors and more than 25 interior color concepts for automakers' consideration. The collection is presented to automakers during PPG's global color show, called "VIEW" this year.

"One of the first things you notice about a vehicle is the color," Harrington said. "This year's color show highlights our viewpoint on color, trends, technology and the global automotive market."

Some new colors in the collection are Cold Stare, a tinted silver with a steel blue highlight; Double Vision, a medium green with a red hue-shifting highlight; Out of Sight, a soft brown with a blue hue-shifting highlight; Quest, a citrus-inspired yellow metallic; and Gleam, an icy green with an intense gold flash.

In addition to color trend forecasting, PPG is on the forefront of creating new paint technologies that enhance automotive design and exceed appearance requirements. This year, the company has demonstrated improvements in special effect pigments. The incorporation of Andaro nanopigment technology by PPG into traditional and alternative OEM coating systems is enabling designers to create new color spaces. These pigments offer higher color saturation while maintaining customer-required durability.

"Our focus for this year's global color show explores effect pigments," said Jerry R. Koenigsmark, PPG manager of color design, North America automotive coatings. "To remain a leader in color design, our methods must be outside the normal mode of thinking. PPG continues to create unique ways of using effect pigments that result in innovative looks and add a new dimension to color and technology."

I've always bought jewel-toned cars....forest green, burgundy, dark blue. Silver just seems too McPlainWrap, and black reminds me of all those hearses I washed when I worked at a funeral home when I was a kid. Plus, I just like a little sparkle and color. Homo like that.

I'll never understand the appeal of white cars. To me they look like giant, rolling laundry appliances. I don't much like black, either.

I've always been a fan of white. I think white is a very elegant, classy and yet also sporty color for most cars. Both my cars are white.

BLACK for a large sedan.
WHITE for a midsize or compact sedan and coupe.
RED for a real sports car.
GRAPHITE to blend in but still look great.

Graphite and Silver are so boring. That's why they're the most popular. The mainstream is plain vanilla.

well, not all of us live in grimey cities!

i've had a white car and a white nissan kingcab. the latter looked larger than it was. a friend's stepson (~10 i think at the time) called it "a big truck." in comparison to the friends older nissan std. cab, it WAS larger, not so much so that anyone else called it "a big truck."

another friend said my cars were good, STEALTH vehicles during the winter. and did NEVER get a ticket in either.

extended cab trucks, even the "compact" ones, aren't that small either, on the other hand. they ARE long. as they say, "Out of the mouth of babes, comes truth."

the wheelbase of that nissan (and that of my current toyota XtraCab), is actually longer than that of a lincoln Town Car. the TC is simply wider and heavier.
and its proportions make it LOOK bigger.

I love white for big luxury cars, especially Mercedes (S, CL, SL, E, CLS) and some Lexi (LS, LX, GS).

Black all the way for hot sport coupes (335i, Cayman S, S5, Z4 Coupe, 350Z, etc.).

Dark blue is nice on normal family sedans (Camcord, 6, Passat, etc.), as is Graphite.

And finally, I love Sprint Blue. Although the S5 looks hot in black--you just have to get Sprint Blue if you're getting an S/RS Audi, with the exception of the S8 because it's not offered in that hue. But I can't help but look back at my S4 when its amazing color is shining like a radiant blue pearl in the sun...

I love the Lexus white. I was in my dealership and there was an IS in Starfire White and it looked silver with all of the metallic flakes they put in it. It's a very attractive color.

a few years back, i was in hawaii and met a woman who had a camry or solara with a special white, that was supposedly a lexus paint option.

i think it was some kind of pearlescent, and when you looked closely at the surface, you could see the rainbow effect just like in real pearls or mother of pearl.

the car just GLEAMED. even more so in twilight or moonlight.

black DOES make certain cars look hot. even with a hint of evil in some cases.
i agree with the 90% of the people who think the pontiac aztek is a visual atrocity. but when i saw one in black, i thot it actually looked cool in that color.

just the other day, i saw a black '07 camry parked in front of a barnes&noble store. looking at it again from inside, thru the large picture window, it was one of the hansomest camrys i have EVER seen.

the chrome logo over the black grill/black front really stood out. i've noted before, the "odd" '07 camry nose makes the toy logo STAND OUT.

in chrome over black, it just JUMPS OUT AT ya!

Yes, the GS450h looks absolutely incredible in Starfire Pearl. And in fact, I just saw an IS250 in that color an hour or so back. Right in the sun. Look very, very good!

Bought my Lexus IS in Black Saphire (looks black in low-light, navy blue in bright light). Don't mean to offend others but light colors in that model made the car look less attractive. Just my opinion.
My '66 Lotus Elan was in British Racing Green, the only color for British sports cars. Man, I'm really going back in the past on that one.

IMO, the IS looks fantastic in Starfire Pearl, that literally pearlescent white-blue color. The IS350 also looks very good in silver; every color except maroon, in fact. To each his own.

for a few years now, i've read of new paints which appear to have different hues under different lighting conditions. have not heard much followup since.

yours is the first CONSUMER comment i've seen.

i DO like the idea. a friend had the same idea when he repainted his car white with barely a HINT of blue MANY DECADES ago!

My 740LI is BMW Individual black with black interior leather. My other car, an X5 4.8i which I am hoping to trade in for a X5 M when it comes out is black on black, while my previous cars were all black with beige leather interior. I don't mind dark blue with black leather interior for the C-Class. I hate white.

I like grey for lower market luxury cars.
