What Recession? Honda Sales Up Almost 18% - But Acura Down 17%

American Honda Motor Co Inc, today announced total June sales of 142,539, up 13.8 percent on a daily-selling-rate basis(1), setting a new record for the month. Reflecting a shifting automotive marketplace, total car sales set a new June record for the first time since 1990 at 97,639, up 34.2 percent versus last year. Year-to-date American Honda sales are up 4.8 percent to 798,358.

"Staying true to our core values is allowing Honda to weather the storm of rising gas prices and help consumers find shelter in our products," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda. "Our factories are doing everything they can to produce the fuel-efficient models consumers are desperately in need of."

Honda Division sales rose 17.9 percent over last year to a new June record of 130,083, driven by record car sales which increased 41.4 percent to 89,947. The fuel-efficient Fit posted its best month ever with sales of 10,003, up 100.5 percent, while Civic hit a new June record, up 23.1 percent to 39,967, and Accord rose 54.5 percent to 39,704. Honda Division light-truck sales of 40,136 reflect a decrease of 14.2 percent. Honda Division sales are up 7.4 percent to 720,444, year-to-date.

Acura Division sales totaled 12,456. Sales of the completely redesigned 2009 TSX sports sedan increased 27.5 percent and set a new June record of 3,869.

I think you need to recheck your figures. I show Honda at 4.76% for the month and 6.67% for the year.

You guys don't get DSR and raw figures mixed up.

I'm not, i'm saying that to compare one companies gains or drops to another is miss leading.

for example, Ford is using total sales, for their % drop. If they used DSR, the drop in sales from last year june would have been less.

Well Acura's numbers aren't surprising. They only have 5 models. 2 growing stale and in need of revisions, 2 trucks, and the new TSX (which would explain why it's the only one increasing)

I think despite the decrease they'll be in fair shape if they don't screw up the new TL. If they develop a true flagship (Damn RL isn't worth the tech put into) and an integra/RSX replacement (maybe built off of the Civic platform) for the gas-conscious they'd be on their way (but not quite there) to being competitive. Oh and it's needless to say a RWD platform.

But hey maybe that's why they're building all this hype with the NSX. So when the world pays attention again they can hit us with something worthwhile. One could only wish.

The numbers are not spun, it's very clear what they are showing. Automotive sales are down across the board yet month after month Honda post gains. The June numbers are a very good measure of how the market is shifting because they are the most recent. The market is different from back in January and February.

For the entire months of January and February the national average for a gallon of gas was right around $3/gallon. For the entire month of June the national average for a gallon of gas was right around $4/gallon. A full 33% higher in June than in Jan/Feb!

The market has changed drastically in the last 6 months. The June numbers are VERY relevant. Look what happened just last month in May, the Civic knocked the F-150 off the top of the sales chart for the first time in how many years? (I assume it did it yet again this month?)

No spin here, and don't be a pinhead either!

the numbers are 'spun'. the headline numbers for the imports are based on a daily sales rate. The number for domestics are based on total volume.

It makes for good, but missleading headlines.

It's interesting that Honda is up 18% while Toyota Division was down 10%. Stripping out trucks, Toyota car sales were up only 4%.

Looks like Honda read the market correctly and has adequate supply to meet demand.

You're forgetting that Toyota has a more comprehensive vehicle lineup than Honda. It's not hard to concentrate on increasing sales on a few vehicles versus an entire lineup.

Fit outsold the YARIS (8,472 vs. 10,003) for the first time which is interesting! But what is weird is the the new pilot had its full month after the 2009 one came out and it still posted a decrease by about 3k units! It is understandable why because it is very ugly and it is not as competitive with the segment in terms of power, fuel economy and value! Honda needs to do something about that.

And the new RL is awesome! I went to the dealer today and drove it and it has been improved in every way possible! The quality is very good and the new 3.7L engine just made it 10x's better than before. It is also very smooth and LUXURIOUS and don't get me started on the technology in it. I actually like the new grill on it and it looks a lot better in person!

What's interesting is the newly redesigned TSX, you know, the one that almost everyone here said signaled the death of Acura. It actually set a sales record in June. I actually saw a few on the road the other day. The car looks pretty good in person. No doubt the same thing will happen with the next TL regardless of the opinions people have here (which is now a GS/5 series competitor).

I wonder if Honda caving in to these so called enthusiasts will hurt them in the end. The new RL with its RWD biased SH-AWD V8 comes out in a year and a half. The NSX replacement (aston martin competitor) comes out in 2 years with the V10. And a RWD coupe next year. This, all being planned with gas prices skyrocketing. But no doubt, their cars will be gas efficient. Even the NSX replacement shuts off 5 cylinders while cruising. I have faith in Fukui though, a well respected Engineer whom Soichiro trusted.

So far it seems Honda gets the last laugh LOL.

So far the only vehicles that are selling are the bread and butter Accord, Civic and Fit on the Honda side and the new TSX on the Acura. The rest of their lineup is EPIC FAIL!

F1 Driver,

"EPIC FAIL"? Oh come on, how is this different than the failure of the line-ups from other carmakers? Is there a manufacturer whose bread and butter 3 cars sells as predictably through all market conditions as Honda's?

How'd you predict Honda sold over 46,000 Civics in May but could only muster a measly 39,000 Civics in June? Why the big drop in June?

Make that 53,000 Civics in May not 46,000.

F1 Driver - it looks like you oppose any favorable comment or sales report about Honda just for the sake of it, without giving much thought to your comments. Makes it hard to take you seriously.

A meaningful comparison is not May to June, but May to May and June to June. May and June are always different for a number of predictable, market-related reasons. However, the data that really tells a story is a comparison of this June and last June, within the greater context of all car sales. Car sales were generally down this June by historic proportions, and yet Honda sales increased this June by historic proportions.

It makes no difference whether Hondas are ugly, have a narrower model line-up than other manufacturers or if you include any other subjective or objective factors. This is business where the bottom line is all that counts, and it appears that Honda's up, in contrast to most other players in this market. This would suggest they generally have a better reading of evolving consumer needs than most other companies, the performance of some of their models notwithstanding (although it would be interesting to compare their truck/SUV sales to those of other brands).

If these trends continue, then just wait and see how much longer Toyota's model lineup stays as diverse as it currently is.

BostonMike, in an ideal world you can look at June to June sales, etc. Fact of the matter is there are competitors to Honda and they posted gains unexpectedly. For example Lexus LX sold something like over 600 units in a time when gas is about $4 a gallon. That goes against the trend of smaller cars when gas prices are high. Toyota Land Cruiser and Sequoia also posted gains unexpectedly. Did the new Honda Pilot posted any gains? Did any of Honda/Acura suvs posted any gains? Like I said only the bread and butter cars like the Accord and Civic posted gains, the rest of their lineup is EPIC FAIL! Even Toyota's bread and butter cars like the Camry and Corolla beat the Accord and Civic in sales.

F1 you don't have a clue...

Wow Toyota sold a whole whopping 631 units of the ALL BRAND SPANKING NEW LX570...you mean an entire 631, whoa stop the presses...all of a sudden those 53,000+ 2 year old design civics sold in May aren't all that impressive. </sarcasm>

Okay so the all brand spanking new LX sold 631 units in June, I wonder why you're not mentioning the fact that the sales of Lexus' best selling model the RX are down a WHOPPING 30%. They sold over 9,000 last June, this June they sold less than 6,000. Even sales for the larger GX are down by over 47%. The fact is that Lexus SUV sales are down 27.9%!!! You had to look to their lowest volume model, that was just entirely redesigned, to find anything positive. The LX represented only a paltry 631 units of the 245,739 Toyota vechiles sold in June '08.

.0025 percent

Sorry but Acura is Epic Fail. Not luxury, not much better than the USDM Accord and quite possibly the ugliest lineup around. They don't have fuel efficient cars or big engines. What is their purpose, to a be brand for Honda owners only?
