What can BMW & Mercedes-Benz do to reach Audi in superior interior design execution?
With Audi clearly leading the pack in interior design execution, the competition needs new ideas to reach the same level of perfection ranging from materials quality, layout, fit & finish, ergonomics and detail as Audi.
I'm switching from Audi to the BMW camp, but as much as I would like to deny it, we all know Audi is the industry leader when it comes to interior design.
Just this year alone 3 Audis won in Ward's Auto for Best Interiors.
Every single Audi model (A3, A4, A6, A8, TT, Q7) has won best interior in its respective class.
What can BMW & MB do to catch up?

Hi,
I really do not think that Audi has the superior design, as you put it. I believe that BMW has a more interesteing and refeshing, yet luxurious in terms of interior design. In terms of material quality, both BMW and Audi are very good at it in their cars except the plastic used in the lower door panels and rear seats in the Audi A3 Sportback, which is a real pity! I personally believe in cas with character.
It is niceto be able to distinguish between wha car you are sitting in without being told. I believe that with BMW, you will certainly be able to know whether you are in a 1, 3, Z4, 5, 6, or 7 Series when sitting inside the car by just looking at the dash design. But Audis are different: A3 and A4 is pretty similar and the sharing of dashes and components are obvious in models like a4,6,3.
Take for instance, the 3 Series interior is state of the art, it looks so solid and luxurious! Are you saying that the A4 interior is better than the 3???
But I would like to congratulate you on your wise decision to become the proud owner of car made by the best car company in the world. You will have a very pleasant and unforgetable experience and one which will keep you with the company for a long time.
Congratulations! Wise man you are!

No not really, LWKH, the X3 had an interior with the exact same hard plastic as the Chevy Cobalt did, it did not scream high quality. The other ones weren't that great either. Audi materials were a cut above. Also, the A4, A6 and A8 have different interior. The 3,5,7 series interiors look more alike than the Audi ones. I am not sure what you are talking about. Also the new 3 series is a yeal old, while the A4 has been out since 2002 (the interior was unchanged in the 2005 face lift) and it still looks on par with the 3 series interior.

Chewy: is it a facelift or is it a completely new designed A4? I still don't get what they did.

LWKH - Audi has won more awards in the industry than anyone hands down.

Best company in the world? LWKH c'mon now you are getting a bit ahead of yourself.
I have had the pleasure of driving numerous BMWs including 2 X5 variants, 4 3-series variants a 7-series and an M3 in the past.

agent 63- They went from a B6 chassis to a B7 chassis. The B6 was only out from 2002 to 2004 the B7 was after that. The design was strictly to improve the breed not to gain style points. That is why the are so similar.

I really also dont think that Audi interiors are even remotely close to its competitors. Maybe ergonomics and fit and finish, but i dont find its appearance that good. I think the exteriors look better than the interiors.
good things this title didnt say "what will lexus do" cause we all know lexus interiors are "da bomb"

Audi interiors are highly overrated.
My first A6 had button stickers peeling off the steering wheel/ climate control and heated seats within 6 months of ownership.
The leather quality sucks. Compare it to a Benz or BMW. You can feel the difference.
The dash became dirty and dis-colored in little time.
And the overall level of quality lacks big time when compared to how well a BMW will stand up over the years.
After owning an Audi, their interior wasnt enough to justify buying another one.
I personally think VW and AUDI interiors are WAY WAY too similar.

I am surprised that no one mentioned an Acura interior. I think the RL is the best looking interior. The wood surrounds from doors through the dash. The central nav/info section is a commanding view - large screen, black text on white. The TSX also has an expensive looking interior. I love the last version of the BMW interior that I drive - E46 & X5. I would rate these equally against Audi's. The new BMW interiors look like cheap plastic and what happened to the idea of integrating the door smoothly into the dash for a surround, cockpit feel?

Come on GermanNut, you join the BMW camp and yet you still persist with the same old Audi amazing interior articles. You know I was happy when you jumped ship...but I'm not happy with this sh*t!
So as far as your topic goes, it's pointless...Pointless because BMW doesn't need to design their interior's as well as Audi does, because the Bimmer's got more soul & originality than Audi will ever have. A BMW is a truly entertaining car to get in and drive everyday you own it! Audi on the other hand is just to conservative.
Mercedes tho that's a different story! Their already making the move on Audi interior wise, by designing truly classy & expenisve feeling cabins. It started with the current SL & E-Class models (E-Class winning best interior in it's class), then the CLS & SLK (which both won best interior in their classes), and now the beautiful S-class's interior, which is yet to really be rated against the competition.
I like Audi, but I hate Quattro... Audi's engineering in my opinion, is more superior than Mercedes but not yet quite as good as BMW. I've always wished that Audi would just make Quattro an option on their car's, I just don't have as much fun driving AWD car's as I do RWD!
That's that.

Audi interiors are the best. But performance wise, BMW is better. BMW and Audi will always be direct competitors. Just look at the M3 vs. RS4!
and BTW,
Lexus and Acura do not compare to any German premium luxury automaker.
GERMAN ENGINEERING AND DESIGN IS SUPERIOR TO JAPANESE.

It is a facelift, there are lots of changes in the styling, it went further than most. The suspension pieces were upgraded, completely new engines were put in. But, the platform remained the same and so did the interior (the steering wheel was the only interior change)

Audi interiors are good according the awards and they look good to me. I am thinking that BMW and MB need to upgrade its interiors to please both critics and fans who are currently praising Audi. Although I don't think that BMW or MB need to copy Audi, they should come out with their own style, like always.

Something you won't see on an Audi:
When you shut the door, the interior door panel won't shake.
This is seen on any Japanese manufacturer and yes even Lexus and Acura. They are well built, but Audi spends a lot more attention to detail.
Also you won't see the sunroof move on an Audi when you shut the door; check out the Japanese competition...

Audi does have good interiors, but the recent MB interiors have shown improvement and promise. Look at the S or CLS-Class for example. It's BMW I am worried about. Their interiors are still good, but compared to the competition, they look cheap. The 7-series is probably the BMW with the best interior at the moment. Not good news at all.
And LWKH, what a troll you are...

LWKH, BMW interiors are boring and cheap, especially the X3.
I currently drive an Audi A4. I will be switching to a BMW 335i.
I agree both the X3 and A3 interiors are cheap

AlexTx, do you even own a lexus or an acura to say that the sunroof shakes when you close the door? I have not seen than in any of my 3 lexus cars...and even if it was there, clearly, not a regular joe can even point it out on a car he uses everyday. I think audi has the worst interiors of any of the luxury car brands...bmw runner up. Its all up to mercedes and lexus to win the next awards

Hey Rupert-
If you think a damp cloth helps a dirty and dis-colored dash then I would be afraid to see the interior of your car. Right....water cleans everything.
You sound like a moron.
The interior of my Audi went to sh*t almost as quickly as your credibility on this site.
