What do you think is the world's best production car?
What do autospies viewers think the best car in the world is? Does the BMW 3-Series deserve that title ?(i don't think so)
To avoid controversy there are no separate categories. One rule though, it must be a production car. It doesn't matter if the car costs $1,000,000 or $10,000. It doesn't matter if it has 1 seat or 10 seats. It just must be a production car that a person could buy.

Best... Quality? Performance? Handling? Value? Versatility? Beauty? Only car I could ever own? Etc.
Leaves a lot of open questions but here goes nothing.

C'mon! Just because it's really (really) fast and good looking, dosen't mean it's the best. It could be a Corolla for all! (just kidding Will). A very expensive car dosen't mean its the best.

rocker, who the hell are you? You are obviously new to Autospies, and have no idea who I am are what I like. The 1979 Mustang is a piece of garbage. Although the 575M is a nice car, i'd rather have a 550 Maranello or a 456M, but a 550i above all. (pratical).
I was just telling German here to carefully think over his choice before he responds on what first pops into his head.

I would have to say it is the BMW Five Series.
Not a particular year or generation, but all of them, from the E12 (1972) to the current E60 (2004).
My personal favorite is the E39. It was beautiful. (I had a 528).

I would say the Lexus LS 600h L. It is one of the best engineered vehicles you can buy, it has tons of research and technological advances put into it. It is the most advanced vehicle there is now. It has a V8 hybrid engine comparible to a V12, and has an AWD system with the hybrid engine. I can already see German fans' comments "Lexus sucks. They don't have a history. Mercedes is the best. I love Mercedes so much I lick the tires of every one I see. They are the nicest vehicles in the world, even though fewer and fewer people are buying them. Blah, blah, blah. Audi is the best, even though Volkswagen makes them and they break down before you can drive them off the lot. BMW is faster."

Easily, the Lexus LS460/600hl
Engineering of the hybrid technology with the most luxurious features and amenties you could ever want on a car for 1/2 of the price you'd pay from its competitors. I still believe parallel parking feature is awesome. (It also can back-in to an open spot, not just parallel park) The 8-stage transmission is smoothest in the world, period. I believe 1989 LS400 trainy is probably smootherthan 2006 bimmers! 30 gig drive is very nifty feature (1086 songs= 4.22 gigs = 3.2 days of continuous play). And my favorite feature of the Lexus is the Design. Its ultra-modern looks w/functionality (lowest coeffcient) and by many standards, years ahead in design in comparison with others.
Therefore, its the Lexus LS460/600hl..Hands down.

Mclaren F1, because even now it is a bettering engineering feat than the Bugatti. Gordon Murray stuck to a weight target (overshooting it really), everything was made to be light weight, even stating, "that if a smaller bolt or screw can go on, even if a larger can fit". The Bugatti had aero problems, which meant that more money spent to correct a a very "flawed" design, not something the Mclaren was. And the Maclaen does 240 MPH with "only" 621 HP, it takes 1,000HP for the Bug to do 250 MPH.

You can get a Veyron and throw out all of the luxury stuff inside to save lots of weight. Or you can destroy the Mclaren F1 with your Veyron with all of the luxury in tact.

Here is a funny thing, there were opinions de-boosted just by giving an opinion (german-nut, Atrain, AmazingBimmer), they didn't start a war betwen brands, they just gave an opinion of wich was for THEM the best production car, why the hell where they de-boosted? Just by not choosing the brand that the people that de-boosted them would choose? Cmon, be reasonable, everyone is free to give their own opinion as long as they respect the next person opinion!!!
About opinions, i agree with YZFracer23, there is no car in the world that reflected a guideline that almost all competition tried to keep with as the 911! Inspite his aura is becoming more blured it still is a living myth and it was, is and will be the car that everyone else will try to surpass!!!
Resume: 911 for ME is the best production car of all times!!!

Agree with IS3andME.
No Bugatti Veyron for me as well. After hearing that the Jeep hurricane concept which had a dual V8(One at the front and one at the back) means a power of W16 and also weighe more than 3 tonnes, can go 0-200(kph) in less than 5 seconds just shocked me.
Bugatti takes some close to 8 seconds for reaching the same 200(kph) Mark.
Therefore Bugatti is out(as i would have given it my vote).
Last week i came to know this(about Jeep Hurricane concept),and i conclude that Bugatti Veyron is a no engineering marvel. It's no way ahead of it's time and pretty competable in today's time.
Therefore I agree with most of the postmates here that many automakers (especially Ferrari,Mercedes Mclaren,Pagani Zonda, koingsegg)can put 16 cylinders,4 turbos and can comeout with the same performance figurs as Bugatti or even better.
But the only reason they are not doing is because such a project or car is no profit to the company.
Not to mention that Bugatti may have made and broken many records and live upto his name, but is a loss to the company in terms of money.
Only rich companies can afford to take such a step, because it will not affect them much financially.Like TOYOTA,VW,Daimlerchrysler,BMW....etc
Small or adeqate companies like Ferrari,Mclaren,Koenigsegg, pagani zonda..etc lives/sustain only on profit.
So they don't get involve in any risky project.
BTW my vote for the best Production goes to the whole Ferrari lineup.Particularly Ferrari Enzo.

Jugnu, just a small coment about small or adequate companies, Ferrari doesn't take any risks, it has a lot of know how from F1 and it is enough for them to sell something that they call exotic and it will sell like hot bread, Mclaren has mercedes money so they have plenty and for Koenigsegg and Pagani, a big part of the car is already developed from another brands (engine, transmission, etc..) so the money involved is quite less and don't forget that this 2 aren't really mass production brands!!

Chewy, the Bug can only destroy the Mclaren only thru the speed traps, but in terms of handling or on the track, because the the Mclaren is well under 3,000 pounds and the Bug is well over 4,000 pounds (stock), the F1 would reign supreme.
The problem with Bugatti was that "the powers that be", wanted it to look like the show car, meaning they didn't think about seriously engineering it. So, they built it, and when then they found out too late that the aerodynamics were very bad for the car (WInd Tunnel anyone?). They had to waste money on re-engineering the aero, and that is why so much much money was spent on engineering the car, plus production delays.
Whereas the Mclaren was thought up, researched, designed, engineered, wind tunnel tested, they know how to do a supercar.
But I also agree now, that the 911 might just be the greast production car, second by the 3 series.

You are wrong, they didn't find out to late that there where aerodynamic problems, they knew that from the start.
And i do think the Bugatti will reign supreme in both a straight line and on a track against the Mclaren F1.
When Evo magazine tested the Bugatti on the tight and curvey roads in France agauinst the Carrera GT, Enzo and Pagani Zonda they said that none of these cars could keep up with the Veyron on both the straights and the corners.
And considering the Mclaren F1 is outdated compared to todays supercars, i doubt it would stand a chance on the track.
@ JUGNU
The Veyron wasn't only meant to be fast, it was also meant to do it comfortable and reliable. The gearbox for example should last more then 20 years etc.
Sure you can make this much power and speed out of any car, but to make that car comfortable and reliable is annother topic, and it is here where the Veyron succeeds above all else.

World's best production car...which read between the lines means the worlds best [evenly distributed among all possible features and abilities] production car.
It doesn't mean to have the best, newest, highest, coolest, most streamlined, fastest, most powerful, of any feature. Because there is one thing that every one on the site can agree on. There is no 100% perfect car. No car ever built was 100% perfect in any feature or attribute. Lexus' new LS600hl, the new S-Class, the Veyron, etc... all have flaws.
But since nothing is 100% perfect, I'd have to say the world's best chance for being the "best" production car would be the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe.

And 399 Enzos are made.
These are all production cars, it's called series production.
If a car is significantly more produced it's called mass production.

It's a tough one to make one car the best. I'd say the Zonda or Veyron. Those cars are just insane. However that's only for the top notch market. For the more mainstream market i would say the CL, CLS, 911 turbo, M5, E55/63, etc it's really hard to pick one

I'm gonna choose Corolla (all generations) simply due to reliability. It may not be the best looking, fastest, quickest handling car ever made, but dadgummit, it has always had good gas mileage, low cost, and you can put a lot of miles over a lot of years on one.
For other categories like Beauty, speed, handling, fun, ect., i'll remain neutral.
