A forum member at FerrariChat is contemplating a new daily driver purchase and he is curious, is the latest BMW M3 a good fit?After all, it does have many adjustable settings and you can snap one up at a decent price these days. Then again, you can pick up something a bit more interesting for that price. Consider: a used Maserati GranSport or a Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG. Starsearch, the M5 and M6 only come in RWD. The only M models with xDrive are the X5 M and X6 M. For a supposed BMW owner, you certainly know little to nothing about their model line up.Spend three minutes on www.bmwusa.com before you make more dumb posts.— HSCenterconsole (View Profile)

The M3 is a fantastic car, but here in New England, the RWD set up limits its daily use in the winter. If money is no object, my ultimate daily driver would be a 911 4S (with snow tires in the winter). Working within a budget, a 335xi coupe would be a solid alternative to the M3 in my opinion.— HSCenterconsole (View Profile)

The 911 C4 is better than the 4s because the tires last a lot longer with 18 inches. The width is the same and will handle the same. It is also slightly more comfortable ride. You won't notice the horsepower difference the regular C4 is up to 345Hp! — pennfootball (View Profile)

I agree with this. It depends on the climate you live in, as well as your socioeconomic situation. I'd love to have a M3 as a summer daily driver. I'd probably hang my commuter cycle up for the summer months and drive to work. People would think I was even more crazy when I chose to ride a bike in the ice and snow over driving, during the winter months.— Shredmo (View Profile)

Part of my rationale is, I don't like driving powerful sports cars designed for a track for my daily driver. I drive in bumper to bumper traffic everyday, rarely getting over 50mph. Driving a sporty car is too frustrating, uncomfortable, pointless. I totally go for serene comfort for the daily driver.— Invisible (View Profile)

Right, bumper to bumper traffic, it would be wasted. I can see your point. I'm a little eccentric; I use my daily driver for the same tasks most people use their bicycle and vice versa w/my bicycles. Since there is only garage space for the 2 cars the wife and I to share, I have 1 sporty car and one practical car. Neither car is ideal for all situations, but between the two I can be satisfied in most situations. Sure, the M3 is too much for me, but that is its appeal.— Shredmo (View Profile)

I have a 335i with a burger tuning stage 2 chip and it is RWD. I live in the chicago area and with snow tires, I have zero problems in the winter. So, some one who is a Ferrari driver would definitely appreciate the M3 sedan as a great daily driver. The rear seats fold down, its fast, has excellent technology that is demanded for daily use. The new DCT is very smooth and the premium sound system is excellent. If you need AWD, go for a 335xi and chip it. It obviously is no M3, but its still a great daily driver that can handle crappy roads and still be tons of fun at highway speeds.— 2ndbimmer (View Profile)

If you own a Ferrari what you need as a daily driver is something comfortable. I would suggest something 5 Series sized then pick whatever brand you feel is best. If you can afford a Ferrari you should also be able to afford a light duty truck (to haul your Ferrari to and from track days)as well as a comfortable car to haul your friends / clients around. — rigid (View Profile)

And both of those magazines you cite get a lot of advertising dollars from BMW. Can't trust their opinions. Better mags to read are AutoCar and CAR, both U.K. publications. They are not beholden to their advertisers. — 204E60 (View Profile)

Good god no. This is a track car for the street. Its your weekend toy...never a daily driver. A daily driver you don't mind if the paint gets a bit messed up due to the road conditions or from parking. You don't mind putting tons of miles on it because you really arent worried about resale value or showing the car off. The tires have to last more than 3 months and preferable can be used most of the year in a variety of conditions. it has to have rims that can stand up to a pothole and wont dent and cost your 2 grand to replace. It has to be reasonable in its fuel usage. And last and most important...it has to be comfortable. A sport suspension definatly does not add to comfort.— Spectator (View Profile)

One of my BMWs is a late-90s 328 cab, and it's a great daily driver. Mind you, it was built back in the days when BMW's defect numbers were much more flattering, and ergonomics came before trendiness. I love *my* BMWs, just not *today's* BMWs.Looking at what BMW turns out today is like looking at an Italian furniture designer magazine: It looks "now" and "new" and "bold", but not something that's welcome in most "real world" lives, and not something that looks "right" years down the road. Comfort and practicality are pushed aside for appearance (iDrive, interior, convex dashboard). It's not "bad". It's just for a "younger" crowd that is into this sort of thing.I much prefer "understated elegance" than "trying-hard edgyness." I prefer "attractive" over "hey, look at me, I'm different for the sake of different" (Banglization).BMW makes great vehicles in many respects. Mostly in handling and delivering that certain "BMW Feel." And as much as I love the BMW Feel, I don't like all the things I have to give up, to get that: styling (inside and out), ergonomics, and reliability.But that's just me. Id literally take an old Honda as a beater/winter car.It will run fine with snow tires,you can neglect it and drive it hard and it will last and not to mention parts are cheap as hell,but if we're talking about a winter car for a Ferrari buyer than I would say something like a Lexus LX. If they want a car and not a truck I would say an Audi RS model or an Xdrive Bimmer. M1 A1 Abrams tank. Five star crash rating, cary all of your friends, turbine power [ will run on any liquid that will combust] very good on road and especially off road, no problem with traffic, just may have a bit of a problem going through the drive thru. :) LOL— bfghemicuda (View Profile)

I must say that I live in Connecticut where the winter can be harsh from time to time and my 04 Audi S4 does well as a daily driver. Slap on snow tires in the winter and you are set. Slap on summer performance during the good seasons and you have reasonable fun. Of course, I have a trophy car, but I think a great daily driver is the S4. Not only does it drive in all weather, but its also ergonomic and it is also priced decently (got mine new in 04, but you could easily get a decent used one for 15K)— ThierryHenry14 (View Profile)
