When will they kill the SC and bring one that doesn't look like the bugs i wash of my windshield? A facelift isn't enough! And it is getting old anyway!

The big news here is that Lexus is going into the entry-level market head on. This means more competition in Europe, although I think I can speak for everyone in questioning whether or not they are even considering more diesel variants for these "entry-level" vehicles?

Also, Australia doesn't seem to believe that the performance variant of the IS will be called the IS-F. Someone should let them know that there will be an IS-F, as well as a reported GS-F.

Lastly, I'll go ahead and admit that the SC cannot hold out all the way to 2010 as they are reporting, but where do they get the idea that the LF-A will "replace" the SC? Those will be two separate vehicles.

Oh, so according to the Lexus camp, there's an excuse for the Lexus hatch now! It's being COMPETITIVE! Oh, of course! The Germans weren't being competitive at all with the 1 Series, A3 and A/B-Class! They were just trying to make cheap cars for the hell of it, right? Ha!

Just because a company makes a hatchback doesn't mean it has to be a POS like the BMW 318ti or Merc C hatch.

Hey... That wasn't what I was saying... I just find it mildly ammusing that alot of people have made a whole lot of noise about how BMW and Mercedes was selling out on their key values with their A-class and 1-series (which definitely isn't a POS)... But now, suddenly, Lexus is releasing a hatchback... Doesn't that mean that Lexus is also trying to make money off their name by going down class? Or is this now suddenly something COMPLETELY different than what the germans have done?

Will_Will_ - 6/20/2007 5:30:14 PM
-1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Stop trying to turn this into a "Lexus vs. German" bitchfight. The 1-Series and A-Class both posses the fewest values of their respective brands. I for one am not excited that they are looking at doing an economy car. It's called being competitive...

If you think the 3 hatchback or the Merc hatchback were representative of a good German luxury car, than I think you are the moron.

The 318ti even featured hubcaps. I believe things like that is what people think of when saying the car hurt the brand's image.

It starts to share more in common with a Hyundai than the S Class. That's the problem.

I don't... But I think the 1-series and the A-class is... And those are hatchbacks... The Ti and the C-class were socalled combi-coupés... At least that was what the manufacturers called them...

And Will... You of all people should just keep your mouth shut here... And I'm not trying to start a bitch fight here... I'm just mocking all the idiots who have, for as long as I can remember, complained about how the germans cared about nothing but making money and was just trying to make money off the badge and everybody buying german cars were just badge whores... and that Lexus just cared about making the best driver experience and didn't need to think about making money... Well, I guess they do... BIG SURPRISE!

RupertRupert - 6/20/2007 5:44:23 PMView My AgentSpace
+3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Ooohhh hubcaps...which you can still get on the 1 series and A class.
I think the 1 series possesses every single one of BMW's brand values; small, light, and great handling. More so than other BMWs, which have become tech-laden and heavy.
The A class does follow the Merc ethos, but the A3 stands for Audi values.
The 3er ti, while small and ugly, was a good little car.

And answer, a bit of your comment gave away your American, biased point of view. "If you think the 3 hatchback or the Merc hatchback were representative of a good German luxury car"
Luxury.
Whoever said that the 3er ti or A class were luxury cars? Not BMW or Merc, but the Americans, for whom premium MUST equal luxury, and thus have failed to grasp the concept of cars with 2 litres or less, cloth seats, hubcaps, a squidgy ride or an interior that doesn't look like a brothel (I'm looking at Lincoln in particular here).
Premium in Europe means more than more equipment, it means a better constructed, more focussed car, with traditional premium values, offering high quality cars.

TheSailorTheSailor - 6/20/2007 5:45:01 PMView My AgentSpace
-1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
No it wasn't... It was a station wagon made to compete with the three series Touring... Not a very successful attempt though... That would make the 3-series touring a hatchback aswell...

answeranswer - 6/20/2007 5:58:22 PMView My AgentSpace
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
So the American mindset of a "premium" car is wrong because it does not match the European idea?

When viewed from an American point of view, which is fair as I live in the U.S., both the 318ti and Merc hatch were seen as "lesser" than their brand counterparts.

The 318ti in America was more of a 3 series for less money, than the "entusiast's" 3.

I think the bottom line for the American market was that both cars were both rather unnecesarry.

TheSailorTheSailor - 6/20/2007 6:11:20 PMView My AgentSpace
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Well... The 3-series Ti was a lesser car than any BMW, so is the 1-series... Nobody is denying that (the 1-series is more of a BMW though than the Ti which truly was a POS) but that doesn't change the fact that the IS-hatch will be a lesser car than the IS simply for being a smaller, cheaper car... Just as the 1-series or the A-class! And the initial argument was that this is exactly what many Lexus fans denied would ever happen!

Will_Will_ - 6/20/2007 7:19:06 PM
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Lexus fans didn't "deny" that it would happen, we just expressed our viewpoint that we did not want Lexus to make a hatchback. Everyone here has a serious problem with mocking the fake Lexus fans here, but not allowing anyone else to mock the droves of retarded German fans.

The 1-Series and A-Class do not represent luxury, which Mercedes and BMW try to portray themselves as. An S-Class has no business being in the same brand as an A-Class. why do you think the luxe Euro companies refuse to send their economy cars to North America? Because they know that they will hurt their prestigious reputations.

TheSailorTheSailor - 6/20/2007 7:26:41 PMView My AgentSpace
0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Nope... I remember several of the drop dead serious Lexus fans claiming that Lexus would NEVER produce a hatchback! Claiming Lexus didn't need to care about profit but only about being the #1 premium brand and that only poser brands would do a low end model for people who couldn't afford a proper premium brand car! You might not have been one of them, but that doesn't change the fact that they aren't out there...

TheSailorTheSailor - 6/20/2007 7:35:45 PMView My AgentSpace
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
And as rupert said, the reason why they won't bring their "small" models to the US is because "premium" is viewed differently in the US... But as you can see, the US is beginning to come around with the introduction of the 1-series and the A3 is doing pretty well... Mercedes is more of a luxury brand than the other two, that is the reason why they don't bring their small cars to the US. Because for some reason, americans can't understand that the fact that the badge is the same doesn't necessarily mean the cars have anything in common... In europe, the A-class isn't a problem for S-class drivers because they know that the cars have nothing in common. The 1-series haven't hurt BMW in europe, the A3 or even the A2 haven't hurt Audi and the A and B-class haven't hurt Mercedes. Why the mentality is so different in Europe and the US I don't know, but it is... Hell... if the badge meant so much, how could Citroen sell the C6?

I find this hillarious! When the germans did it, they were selling out on their name, they were being cheapskates, they were appealing to posers and they were just stupid... Now it's all about making money and being competitive, so now it is suddenly okay? YOU KNOW THE MEANING OF THE WORD HIPOCRITE? At least the fans with half a brain can admit that it is a bad move by Lexus!

answer, you're right, the "cheap" BMW's and Benz's were much closer to Hyundai's than S-classes. They were also a hell of a lot closer in price to Hyundai's than S-classes. When BMW and Mercedes want to make cars like an S-class, they do, they call them 7's and S's. When they want to make less expensive cars to tap into a market full of people who'd love to own a BMW or Mercedes but thought they could never afford it, people who might buy a Hyundai for example, they make cars like the ones you're talking about.

answeranswer - 6/22/2007 12:20:43 PMView My AgentSpace
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Oh get real.

You know what I am talking about. Both the 318ti and the Merc hatch were not very representative of their respective brands.

As much as people love to knock Lexus, no Lexus has come with hupcaps (maybe the old ES250 if anything). That is something that Lexus did to preserve their image.

Common sense says that an $80,000 car will be a lot different than a $25,000 one. But certain things on entry level cars of luxury brands are to be expected. Hupcaps aren't one of them.

It's just an example of how much you want to water-down your brand image in persuit of a niche in the market.

Now the 1 series looks to be a different story. A more affordable BMW that perserves the "BMWness" of the brand.

It might be different in Europe where the delivery man pulls up to your place in a Mercedes van, but here in America the brand is first and foremost a luxury brand. The mere idea of a small, cheap hatchback is not a good fit for the brand image.

And if those cars were so great and so beloved, why aren't they offered in the U.S. anymore?

Formula1, though I agree Lexus doesn't make "enthusiast cars" (nor are they trying to) I think you are a moron for those comments! The LS looks good, the IS looks very good, the GS looks pretty good, the RX look pretty good as well, the LX looks... well, like a big SUV... That means that the list have been boiled down to the SC which looks like a bug and the GX which looks plain boring... But that is two of their cars... The rest all have some pretty good designs! If you can't see that simply because they are Lexuses, you truly are an idiot! I don't like some of the fans trying to make Lexus sound like it is the only truth and the ultimate in cars, but they make very good luxury cars, and most of their cars looks good... Everybody has their fair share of misfits... BMW have the X3 (better after the facelift but it still isn't a beauty by any standards), Mercedes have the B-class, Audi has - well they don't really have any ugly cars but that is just because they are playing it VERY safe...

Lately your arrogance has been getting on my nerves. The German luxury carmakers can offer smaller cars in Europe as a means of survivial and sucking in younger customers. It's a great way of obtaining new potential customers.

And no matter what, Lexus will never have the prestige of the German luxury brands. Just look at the history of BMW and Mercedes. Enough said.

ROFLMAO

Yes... BMW doesn't have the slightest idea of how to make proper cars and they haven't built any performance cars... Lexus on the other hand have proven time and time again that they know how to make a car with fantastic handling... Who doesn't remember the fantastic IS-F CSL they... Wait a minute... I think I might have gotten something backwards here... OHHHH... That is because BMW is the one who have shown time and time again that they can put a sports car together and Lexus who haven't even released their first performance orientated car yet! When the M3 CSL came out, it put several mid and rear engined supercars to shame around the Nordsleife. And that wasn't even a mid engined purpose built supercar... That was a coupe with a measly 6 cylinder engine pumping out a laughable 360 hp... So... What is it that leads you to believe that BMW doesn't have the knowhow and the abilities to put a proper LF-A beating supercar together? Actually, I'd like to see the LF-A beat the CSL around the Nordsleife (that is the Nürburgring to you, ignoramus) before you start telling us just how fantastic that car really is! Ohh, what was that? It haven't proven itself yet? Ohhhh... My bad!

Lexus is in a rampage and Toyota has the funds to compete. Especially since they do not have the overhead GM and Ford has. Toyota would not be were it is today without Gov't help, poor GM and Ford has to pay 95 Billion a year to pay for RETIRED employee benefits.

Suddenly, the reply button works!

I agree on the LS. With big rims, it looks very hot. Understated and elegant... similar to the last-gen S-Class in execution, which is no insult. The new S and the old S are beautiful in different ways.

This is the beginning of an onslaught of new product. Lexus has been planning this for years. They were waiting for all dealers to build or upgrade their dealerships. Now that they can handle the extra service business look out. They just built a 20 million dollar dealership in New Orleans. You should see how pathetic it makes the bmw, mercedes, another dealers look. This makes a big difference when service is so good it gives them a big edge.

Lexus has great sales in the United States, has an excelent reputation for quality, and offers up as much innovation as their competitors do.

But you're right once again formula1, Lexus means nothing in the automotive world.

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the (REPREHENSIBLE) Toyota/Lexus people.....
