I somewhat agree. If a person buys a Ferrari Mondial because they want to join the Ferrari club, then they are a poser. But if they buy one because they truly love Ferraris, then I don't think anything is wrong with that. Or if a person buys a 2011 S class than the 2013 MY and save 15k, I don't see anything wrong with that also. I think you’re just a pompous spoiled snob, who relies on daddy’s credit card. Your only making yourself look foolish with your lengthily posts. While I respect you and your friends for being enthusiasts, the reality is if you had any income you would never be considering compact jap cars used or new. You wouldn't even notice them let alone drone on and on about it. Specifically your comments about saving $50k on a used S (600) class highlight the point you have never faced this decision. It is not worth my time to enlighten you. You have a lot to learn and too much to say. Remember one mans ceiling is another mans floor.

I disagree, I believe that posing is an essential part of upward mobility. There is nothing wrong with being a poseur. The definition that most would agree is "a person who pretends to be something he is not." So let's say I'm middle class, and can only afford a brand new Honda Accord. But I hate being poor, I hate Hondas (or Toyotas, or Hyundai, etc.) or any other "economy" brand, because I want to be happy now, I want to enjoy the feeling of driving a BMW now, even though it may be 10 years old. For me,driving is about more than just getting to my destination, it's about enjoying the ride, but I can only afford a CPO BMW or a brand new leased BMW. I assume getting a new car on lease is also posing, because you unless you can buy a car with cash, you can't really afford it right?

Anyway, you are saying that people who don't have enough money should just suck it up and try to enjoy the soulless driving experience of whatever new car they can afford because buying new is not posing? Ridiculous. There is absolutely NOTHING WRONG with being a poseur, because capitalism calls that ambition, dreams and hopes. There is an old saying that continues to be good advice: "Dress for the position you want, not the position you have."

Jay Z was a poseur (as many inner city residents are) when he was struggling 15 years ago (read his bio). No, not all poseurs achieve their dream, but all successful people start off at the bottom, posing and imagining where they will be one day.

I love your post they are hilarious. You pontificate (seemingly endlessly) on the buying of a used luxury car as a poser‘s choice, then recite you love of the Cadillac Escalade, one of the ultimate poser cars. IT’S A TAHOE, lightly tarted up, with Cadillac grille. “Hey look at me I just paid 30 grand more for 2 grand worth of content. It tows well and holds a lot of people, that’s it, it performs dismally and the only thing worse is it fuel economy and resell value.

Savvy budgeter always buy used, as for you Rolls Royce salesman I bet he selling just new cars. One other thing a three old BMW 3er is still five time the drivers’ car of new Camry.

"Japanengineering" comment is dumb. YOU are a poser if you buy a used Merc or Bimmer just to look good to anyone. Those cars are truly great cars and are far better then any japanese trash out on the market. I rather buy a 5 year old good condition BMW or Merc before I buy a new japanese toy car simply because its a better car period. And if you are worried about maintaining any car then you shouldn't buy it no matter who makes it. Although I've owned over a dozen BMW cars of different models and a few Mercedes some brand new and some with tons of miles and I've never had a catastrophic failure of any kind on any of them to the point I couldn't afford to fix it. Also I would never purchase a new Mercedes because they tank in value unfortunately. But if you wait a 2-3 years it can be had for a steal I don't consider that at all a poser simply smart with your money. Obviously this guy has never owned any of these real luxury cars because he's in love with his japanese cars and thats fine but to call someone a poser because they buy used german luxury cars is asinine

I just bought a special order, new '13 SL for $125K. In the showroom, the soft close doors didn't work. Took 'em a month to figure it out. While there, rear end banged by a custodian worker, and rear wheel chipped. Am still seething from experience of, new.

A 2007 Mercedes CL600 with 59K miles recently sold on eBay for only $39K. That's a V12, 510 HP 612 Lbs Ft Mercedes with an original retail of over $155K only 5 years ago.

the market get's 'flooded with their off lease cars?" that's interesting. then why are the lease residuals remarkably high for many german models?

also, did you know that the overwhelming majority of all cars over $50,000 are leased? where do the floods of non-german off lease cars go?

ABSOLUTELY TRUE!

That's exactly the reason I now dump all mine once the warranty and/or lease run out...Made that mistake only once when the steering angle sensor on a 2007 BMW 530XI went bad (for a second time?!?!?) ONE MONTH out of warranty to the tune of $,1200 effen dollars! Got so disgusted with the whole German car proposition that I went back to buying AMERICAN.

I now have a 2012 Chrysler 300C loaded with AWD, a HEMI V-8 and every possible option and I couldn't be happier. It's fast as snot, paid half the price and have basically the same advanced features and technologies and gadgets and haven't had one problem in the year I have owned. And I like paying $25 for oil changes instead of the $100 I used to spend. (So what if I don't get a free lunch like I did in the fancy car dealer's cafe. The money I now save I can go to the best place in town for lunch-LOL)

I admit German cars are fun but at what price? And that cost of ownership only gets higher as time goes on... As the saying goes, "been there done that (for 30 years)" and "got the t-shirt for it"

There are Two Brands that qualify...Acura and Infiniti,But the winner is...Acura, in particular the RL.
To quote Kelly Blue Book "The 2012 Acura RL's resale value is predicted to be marginal over the next five years, below those of competitors such as the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Lexus GS, but above the Cadillac CTS and Volvo S80."
Cheaper to buy used, and MUCH cheaper to maintain. (Have you priced a alternator for an Audi? If you can even find one !)

Hard to get a steal on any used car at a lot. Why? It is hard to steal a car from the professional used car thieves. If you ever visit a used car lot, best to leave your wallet at home.
