Which car will be the M5's biggest nightmare? ?
These are all beautiful cars but there can be only one winner...So what say you AutoSpies.com Spies?
I'll start the battle and give you my ranking (in order of beauty).
1. Jaguar CX-F
2. BMW CS
3. Aston Martin Rapide
4. Porsche Panamera
Here's why I picked them the way I did...
I always thought the Rapide was gorgeous until I saw the CX-F and CS. Still gorgeous, but they have something about them that I like better.
The reason I chose the Jag number one was because I think elegant is on the way out for the true players in cars and edgy is the new elegant. And I think the CX-F is the best combo of edgy, elegant and futuristic.
But without a doubt, the BMW CS is sooo close in my opinion.
When you do your ranking please tell us WHY you chose one over the other...

Yes you are right there can only be one winner, one perfect solution, and one perfect car. Diverse products and brands are the nature of the diverse world.
There doesn't have to be one winner.

Well it's simple, if BMW release the CS it has to be faster than the M5 and by definition would be an M5 killer. Not sure it would take away from the M5's market though as i can imagine it would be significantly more expensive than the current M5 and M6.

I know most of you don't want to hear it, but the CTSv is going to be a threat, PRICE wise. The perfomence will be on par but not to sure about driving dynamics. It will have 550+ hp for around 50,000. Now, go ahead and deboost me to the gallows along with all the Lexus fans.

Seriously. The RS6 and M5 are going to continue their leapfrogging game probably until environmentalists get their way and pass laws to restrict hp. The E63's always in the mix too but somehow it just kinda remains out of the spotlight.
The S6 is kinda the sleeper car as some mags have rated it as high as the M5.
Anyway, my bad if I've repeated somebody else's post but there's far too much to read all of it.

1:BMW CS the sexiest IMO; sportiness very close second to Porsche, probably not the most expensive.
2:Porsche Panamera probably the best handling given it's a porsche, and how cool would it be to be able to be with 3 people you love in a Porsche that's a proper sports car!
3:Aston Martin Rapide Classiest, second coolest...
4:Jaguar CX-F it's here because it's only a concept car showing the future S-type, so much for dreaming.

I couldn't agree with you more. My suspicion is that the RS6 Avant would do it. So you can imagine what the sedan will do.
IMO when the RS6 is released it will out perform the M5 in handling and on the straight.
It's my suspicion that the M5 will get a good view of the RS6's rear lights on the straight and even more so on a track with many corners.

I always thought these four cars to be more CLS competitors in the old "4 door coupe" segment. Performance-wise, however, I would have to give it to the Panamera.
Design-wise, I like the Jag, but as was said before, it is only a concept and we all know how Ford concepts seem to get watered down substantially through the production process.
So, assuming the CX-F will be a flop, I would take the AM Rapide. It was #1 in styling when it debuted and still is today!

you are both morons.
farabira-
you have x-ray glasses? you can see through the camo on those spy shots? or are you referring to the CGIs that offer absolutely no clue as to what the XF will look like? either way, i'd like to know.
furthermore, i didn't call the XF a flop...i said "assuming" that it's a flop. If its not a dissappointment, then i would prefer it over the Rapide.
and jag-
jag is a subsidiary of ford. like sikorsky is a subsidiary of United Technolgogies, and ben and jerry's is a subsidiary of unilever. therefore, whether you like it or not, a jag is a ford motor company brand. FMC executives call the final shots at jaguar, even if jag has their own engineers...who do think is funding it? jaguar hasn't been profitable since ford bought them, so they sure aren't funding their projects in-house.
be more informed, ace.

What is the meaning of this post?! To establish which car we think is going to be the biggest threat to the M5? Because that would be the upcomming RS6.
Or is it which 4-door coupé we like the best? Because then it is the Aston Martin rapide... Could you please specify what you mean here 001?

If the Panamera handles like other Porsche sport cars, I think it will give the M5 a very good run for the money.
Why is the MB CLS63 not included in this list? It is in the same category as the Panamera, the Jaguar CX-F, BMW CS, Aston Martin Rapide. In fact the m5 is a sedan, while the cars on the list are coupe sedans.

in terms of styling the Jaguar by far. And, unlike some of the other people here, the Jaguar is in the same category as the M5. The M5 is an $80,000 car and the C-FX is just replacing the S-Type and more than likely there will be an "R" Type for the C-FX, which will put it somewhat in the price range of the M5 (although I think the Jaguar will still probably be $5,000-10,000 cheaper even in R-type trim). Not sure about the other cars if they are in the same category as the M5 and I couldn't see porsche being any less than $100,000, POSSIBLY $90,000 for a BASE model, but unlikely.
As far as what's not on the list, the CTS-V is definitely the biggest immediate threat to the M5 because of power and price. The Lexus IS-F is just freaking hideous and I'm willing to bet that the handling on that car only gets worse with the v8 because the is350 was a bit nose heavy as it was. The damn front of the car looks like a peacock. Too bad too cause the IS350 was a nice car to look at... very stylish and they just destroyed it with the v8 version.

I have said this before, and I shall say it again [pronounce Uh-Gain] Jaguar and Ford are not the same. Jaguar maintains an autonomous power structure, and whilst production cars that deviate significantly from concepts may be the history of Ford, it is not so of Jaguar in particular as of late.
The last concept before the C-XF produced by Jaguar was the Advanced Lightweight Coupe, which deviated very little from the production version of the car. Insiders have stated that the XF will be the C-XF minus about 25%.

That reminds me of the scene in Dangerous Liaisons where the Vicomte de Valmont [John Malkovich] asks the Marquise de Merteuil [Glenn Close]. “Why do you suppose it is that we are compelled to chase only the ones that run away?”

The BMW M6 better compliments your comparison, and even then both the M5 and M6 would probably wipe the floor of the competition(in an all around competition).
There is hardly a nightmare for the M5, and the Porsche Panamera? I'm a big fan of Porsche, but the Panamera just doesn't make sense to me.

None of the above. CLS63 AMG, Panamera, Quattroporte and XF-R are in one class... Rapide is also a Q-Porte competitor, but is more exotic than the other three.
On the other hand, the RS6, M5 and E63 AMG are in a different group altogether. The old S-Type R was a competitor, but the new XF looks more like a sexy "four door coupe," and therefore competes most directly with the CLS, IMO.
And if you're asking me which one I would want (of the four in the article), it would be the Rapide, no questions asked. 001, you think the BMW is hot?! BMW does a great job with more imposing, stately designs- 7 Series and 6 Series are the best examples. But BMW just doesn't have quite the same handle on "sexy;" Jaguar, Aston Martin and Porsche have been doing "sexy" for decades.

I picked the Panamera... Even though I am not in love with the shots I've seen of the design. The engine is what its all about when comparing to BMW. The Rapide will be in a different price group, The Jaguar while drop dead gorgeous in typical Jaguar tradition come to the party underpowered so its shot in the foot before it starts. While I have confidence in BMW engines I think the CS is too stylized a design to win any real sales. Kinda like the Z4 which is just fading away.

i've heard that the XF will be standard with a supercharger... giving it 400+hp. the xf-r will have something along the lines of 500, apparently. that makes your "underpowered" argument a moot point.
i hope jag can figure out how to make better engines without resorting to superchargers, but anything better than the 300hp v8 they have in the XJ/XK is... well, better!

That is true, the XF will have a supercharger standard. the XF-R, which will come later, will have the new 5.0 liter V8, when they have finished its development from my understanding.

The Jag will have standard superchargers but my point is that the M5 had 500hp a year ago, the E63 has 500 hp, the Porsche Turbo S motor is at 500+. The Jag doesn't need to shop up at the party late with what everyone already has. Supercharger or not!!! Its not a moot point, its a very valid statement backed up by numbers. Historically under Ford rule Jaguars have been underpowered when compared to their competition.

Well, I must agree with "GX470guy..." as weird as that is.
It IS a moot point!
Would you really say a 500hp supersedan is "underpowered?" Do you really NEED anything more than 300hp? Will the 50hp advantage that its competitors have make the XF-R look "underpowered" or anytihing near anemic? It's just ridiculous to think that way. In Jag fashion, the XF will probably weigh less than most competitors... countering its horsepower "disadvantage." It is just mind-boggling! 500hp! UNDERPOWERED!!! LOL!

Do you seriously believe that it is a smart move to bring a new car to market that is already outpowered by the current models in its class? If you do you are an idiot. Thats the same formula that Jaguar has followed for years and its the reason you don't see many S-Type R's on the streets. In Jag fasion it will also be smaller, slower and less sophisticated than its competitors too. Don't get it twisted I like Jags, heck, almost bought an XK this year, but it was outpowered by everything in its class ( the CLK 550 and BMW 650ci)and also it just isn't as advanced a car. Thats a fact.
In your earlier statement you mentioned the CLS 63 and the RS6 which already beat 500 hp, think about it the Jag is a year down the line and it will be coming to the party with the same things that everyone else already has. So yes IT WILL BE UNDERPOWERED by the standards set buy the other carmakers.

You still sound ridiculous! 500hp is hardly underpowered! And I wouldn't be surprised if the XF-R came with more than that- this is just speculation!
You're too wrong about how this new Jag won't be sophisticated. This is the poster child of the new age of Jaguar; it will lead the brand with completely modern, hot styling, a more contemporary interior design and, best of all, more POWER. I have a soft spot for Jags, and none of them are really "underpowered" except the retarded X-Type. The others, such as the normal XJ8, can keep up with most cars in this class because of their light weight. Nobody truly NEEDS the 400hp of the XJR; the fact that it still costs less than a base S550 is icing on the cake,
TauronB2G
- 4/26/2007 1:52:39 PM

You still havent' addressed the power deficit that the current Jaguars have vs. their competition in the class.
MB E63 -507hp V8
4.2 sec
Audi S6- 435hp V10
0-60=5.4 sec5.4 sec
BMW M5-500hp V10
0-60=4.2sec
Jaguar XJR- 390hp Supercharged V8
0-60=4.8sec
So with the exception of the Audi the XJR is already slower and lighter then all these cars and its still LAST in numbers. By the way I got the numbers from car and drivers recent comparo.
500 is underpowered when in fact that the other cars in that class have it already and you'll be coming to market with it in another year or two. The current V8s in the class already have between 360 and 390 horsepower. RIght? The Jaguar has 300. You cannot argue with that. These cars are not about need these cars are about want and oneupmanship. So bringing a Supercharged V8 with a 6 speed automatic to market when everyone else is using normally aspirated v8's and v10's with 7 and soon 8 speed auto's is not a recipe for success. Jaguar needs to bring something new and better to the party.
They need a normally asiprated 400 hp V8 with a new transmission for the regualar XF, then a supercharged version of that same engine coming in at around 520-550 hp to compete in the supersedan wars. That would give them a halo car versus an also ran.
S4 you make some decent points sometime but you cannot argue with raw numbers. The numbers tell it.

I'm a little confused. Are we talking about styling or performance. If it's strictly styling the Jag takes it,next the BMW,Rapid, and Panamera.
Jaguar-The combination of elegance and body tension does it for me.
BMW-You wonder why they couldn't they come up with this in the 1st place 5 yrs ago. This style cannot happen soon enough.
Aston-Still an elegant beautiful design.
Panamera-I think a very good design from the front but dissapoimtingly conservative in the 3/4 and rear hump. If your talking performance it appears that the Panamera would take it but the BMW would run it close. Hard to say on the Jag and Aston. Prodrive could certainly up the ante based on their experience with Aston racing.

The pole might be close but you have to consider how many people just voted for the BMW because it's a BMW, most people on this site aren't doing the same for the Jag.
Personally I voted for the Jag even though I don't really care for Jag as company, but that CX-S is just one beautiful car, clearly better looking than the CS.

i thought the jag was supposed to retain most of the current s-types innards. the jag has style, but lacks the substance to take on the m5.
the cs is barely a concept.
the aston will probably cost $50k more than the bmw, but will surely compete. great style. great materials. cramped rear seat.
the panamera will likely be the best performing, but we've yet to see anything close to a final body style.
myself, i'm very partial to the 4 door porsche idea. perhaps it will offset the bad karma the porsche suv created?

By a long margin best looking cars:
1) cxf beautiful all the headlamps seem a part of the car's body and man what surfacing and the overall body shape, just one word: brilliant. Design like this don't come so often: pure body surface, catchy body shape, and everything looking like part of one body make this car a revolutionary design.
2) had my doubts abou the bmw cs, but after seeing the video in autocar i was swept off my feet. A beautiful piece of machine and yes this looks like it can be "the ultimate driving machine"
3) porsche panamera, if they can get it to look like the carrera gt, atleast look wise even if the proportions are more close to the 911, then I think that it will up the rapide.
4) when it came out it was sleek and beautiful. But seems almost dated now compared the Cxf,CS, and panamera. The opposition look more crisp and fresh.

001, So when did the M5 become a 4 door coupe?
all the lists are the upcoming 4-door coupe aimed at
MB CLS arent they?
M5 is a 4 door super saloon, not in competition with any cars that you listed.

You know Rob, there are some interesting things about the BMW number: actually the numbers in particular. I would have expected the posts to be sort of a rough random sampling of the information supported by the poll. This isn't the case though, for people who have posted on her in a clear manner what their vote was, the numbers are as follows.
Jaguar - 7
BMW - 1 [perhaps 2-but it was a bit ambiguous]
Aston Martin - 3
Porsche - 3
[dual firsts were awarded to the first in sequential order]
The proportions of the latter two to the Jaguar number are not correct either. In addition, for quite some time they ran essentially the same during the polling process.
If someone is finagling the voting they are rather tenacious. I doubt that is what is going on. People though seem perfectly happy to vote for the BMW but not defend it.

This thread is revealing the ignorance of the poster's industry knowledge of the segmentation of car models.
The Aston Rapide, Merc CLS AMG, Audi A7 (RS7?), Porsche Panamera, and Maserati Quattroporteare are a relatively new segment of cars that are high end "Sport-Coupe Sport-Sedan crossovers". BMW does not have a car in this segment.
Competing directly against the M5 are: Merc E63, Audi RS6, Cadilac STS-V, and that's about it.
Certainly the M5 is displacing buyers of a lot of other cars out there, almost all of which are more expensive than the M5.
Said another way, the M5 is SO GOOD at what it does, that people will reconsider what class of car they set out to buy.

The Bimmer CS, Aston Martin Rapide, and Porsche Pana-whatever, are all Mercedes-Benz CLS competition.
None of the above would have the M5 having nightmares. They really arent even in the same class.
I think I would go with those of you who named the RS6 to give the M5 a run for the money.
Two others in the M5 category need to step their game up a little. -Mercedes Benz E63 and Cadillac STS-V
Also, I dont know why but Im VERY curious about the all-new XF in "R" form.

I beg to differ the E63 is faster and arguably (depending on personal tastes) better looking. Styling is subjective but engine wise the Benz has it. They are producing slightly more horsepower with two less cylinders. You know what old gearheads say, theres no replacement for displacement!

Only some old gearheads say that. New gearheads understand the benefits of designing lightweight, precise, high revving engines that have wide power bands without turbos or superchargers.
