Who Is the Next GM Brand To Bite Dust? It May NOT Be Hummer!
Just recently
General Motors
announced to stockholders that they were "considering" selling their Hummer division due to rising fuel costs and development costs. GMInsidenews learned earlier today that GM is operating Hummer like they will be for-sure selling it. The GMT-700 H3 program has been canceled entirely and the H4 program is being sustained for the next owner. However that is not the big news here.
GMI also learned that GM is considering killing off one more division; GMC or Pontiac. At the moment the GM Board of Directors is leaning toward killing GMC as the brand is made up entirely of rebadges. The Board is also taking into consideration that GMC is mostly trucks and SUV's, both market segments that slowly dwindling.

I'd kill Pontiac over GMC. The only saving grace was the trans am. When that died, Pontiac died.

GM brands should be
- Hummer + GMC (Trucks)
- Chevy + Saturn (Economy Cars)
- Buick (Semi-luxury cars)
- Cadillac (Luxury cars)
- Saab (European Flavor)
Sorry, Pontiac has no place.

Hey now! The Pontiac G8 is a gorgeous car! Also the new G8 GTX will be amazing. However, I must agree that all the other cars are worthless.

technically GM could do without all those brands except Chevrolet and Cadillac.....Saab and Cadillac though different customers are competing for the same market share. Pontiac, Saturn, and Chevrolet are again all competing for the same market share the Aura, G6, and Malibu, all compete with each other while different takes on the same car....GM could do without the other brands.....and just have a luxury company and a mainstream company Chevy has trucks and SUVS no need for GMC or Hummer.

I was in the Dominican Republic recently talking to a native. We began talking cars, he seemed very aware of most vehicles sold in the US, but had never heard of Pontiac. This is one of the most interesting conversations automotive related I have had ever.
FYI, most of the residents in D.R. don't have cars. They might have a motorcycle for the family.
Only after this conversation would I agree that Chevy and Cadillac are the only two necessary components of GM, but lets not forget how huge Buick is in China.

I'd kill BUICK and Oldsmobile first. Then maybe the Saturn and GEO to follow shortly. The only ones worth keeping are Chevy and Cadallic.

not to mention Saturn is making a decent and unassuming comeback. They have a few nice designs and show a promising dedication to fuel efficiency for the future.

No No keep Hummer, everyone wants 8mpg. Nice thinking GM. Does make you feel sorry for the owners of these franchises. Hummer dealers spent all that money on there "quonset hut" dealerships, and now GM says, sorry. Or will that be GMC, or Pontiac, it's sad.

I share the opinion that GM should kill every brand save Chevy and Cadillac. They are the two most iconic brands. GM should focus on a single mass-market division and a luxury division. They are not selling enough cars to justify the portfolio of brands.
They can make a Chevy 'SS' lineup as the performance brand.
Buicks are pointless. The Enclave is very nice, but it could have been just as (if not more) effective dressed and marketed as a Cadillac. Why did they even bother with that instead of replacing the SRX?

The only Hummer worthy of being missed is the H-1! And I believe that it could be powered more economically by having electric motors in each wheel like PML's mini Cooper with 640hp. With this kind of efficiency the Hummer brand could be revitalized.

I'm lost now...I thought that GMC was the only brand that everyone could easily recognize as GM's.
I'm not a GM fan, but losing GMC to some other company is like losing a large portion of your very own heritage...life...very own family.
However, GMC really is no more than rebadged brands, yet it somehow still falls behind Chevy, such as its trucks and SUV's.
If taking risks isn't part of GM's agenda, then GMC really has to go.
P.S.: Doesn't GMC stand for General Motors Trucks [Corporation/Company]?

Kill GMC, Pontiac at least has some bespoke cars. GM should stick with Chevy, Saab, Cadillac, and Pontiac. Join Chevy-GMC and Pontiac-Saturn.

SAAB should break away from GM all in all. They have potential to on their own or be bought out or merge with other Euro brands. Such as Pugueot or Alfa, etc...As for the rest of the GM brands. Does not matter which brand they kill off...All of them are already dead....just on life support at this point.

I think Hummer still has a place for all those people who want to make a statement. Let's face it, Hummer never really had anything going for it except it was a look at me and what I can waste my money on vehicle. It was never the best at anything (fuel economy, comfort, features, reliability, off-road performance). Hummer was a car for those who needed to compensate for whatever was missing in their lives with a car that said I am impractical and ostentatious so at least everyone else will be talking about me.

If I were in charge of GM, I would put my full efforts behind Cadillac, Chevy, Saturn, and Buick. Saab is out because they junk and almost no one buys them. Cadillac is making a great comeback and just needs a little more umph to put it into the level of BMW and Mercedes. Chevy should be the reliable family car. Saturn should be the college student/youth economy car. Buick should be the semi-luxury retiree car, at least until the current flock of senior citizens dies off and stops buying them, then it will be time to reevaluate.

Wow, 3 for 3. Already brought this topic up about a year ago where Saturn should be renamed Opel and GMC should become a high trim level (i.e. Malibu GMC and Astra GMC)
Dealer network should be.
Chevy, Buick, Hummer and Cadillac
Opel and Saab
