Who Leads the Pack in Customer Loyalty and Who Is Bringing Up The Rear?
Toyota leads the automotive industry in retaining the highest percentage of new-vehicle purchasers for a second consecutive year, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Customer Retention StudySM released today.

Now in its fifth year, the study measures the percentage of new-vehicle buyers and lessees who replace a previously purchased new vehicle with another from the same nameplate.

Improving by nearly one percentage point from 2006, Toyota (64.6%) leads the customer retention rankings, followed by Lexus (63.0%) and Honda (62.8%). Each brand achieves the same rank position in 2007 as in 2006.

“Toyota’s high customer retention rate is particularly notable, considering that new-vehicle sales have declined in the past year,” said Neal Oddes, director of product research and analysis at J.D. Power and Associates. “Toyota maintains its high retention rates by providing high-quality vehicles and service to its existing customers, which in turn generates favorable word-of-mouth recommendations that attract new customers.”

Customer retention rates have remained stable in the industry since 2003 at approximately 49 percent. However, individual nameplates have incurred substantial gains and losses within the past five years. Most notable are Suzuki, which improves by 19 percentage points, and Mazda, up 9 percentage points since 2003.

Suzuki’s five-year gain in customer retention is the largest since the study’s inception in 2003. The study identifies increased cargo capacity and higher resale value as the main reasons for Suzuki’s improvement.

Mazda’s improvements to the styling and quality of its product line have helped to elevate their retention rates. In particular, the study finds that better safety features, fuel economy and seating arrangements have led to Mazda’s five-year gain.

“The improvements that Suzuki and Mazda have made in vehicle appeal and quality have paid off in steady increases in their customer retention rates during the past five years, indicating that they have also been successful in changing customer perceptions of their vehicles, which can be a daunting task,” said Oddes. “Typically, when a brand introduces improvements to its product line, it takes some time for customer perceptions to improve accordingly, particularly if there are negative perceptions to overcome. By implementing effective service programs that provide customers with positive experiences, brands can change customer perceptions more quickly.”

Customer retention may become even more important to automakers in the coming years, as new-vehicle sales between 2007 and 2014 are expected to increase by only 8 percent, or about 1.2 million units.

“Competition for a dwindling number of new-vehicle buyers will likely intensify in the next seven years, meaning that brands will need to retain more of their existing customers in order to increase, or even maintain, market share,” said Oddes. “In addition, it is approximately four times more costly to attain a new customer than it is to retain an existing one, so in the face of a very competitive new-vehicle market, a strong focus on customer retention becomes particularly important.”

The 2007 Customer Retention Study is based on responses from 169,017 new-vehicle buyers and lessees, of which 101,860 replaced a vehicle that was previously acquired new.

"what's the average age of a S class buyer?"

about a decade younger than the LS buyer...early 50s vs early 60s.

and significantly higher income.

"old people don't really go around buying new cars that often. they pretty much drive the same buick they bought 25 years ago"

you really don't know many older affluent people do you? they're one of the wealthiest groups of people in the world and they buy new cars on a whim. and most of them lease because they like new cars every 3 years.

It isn't surprising to see Mini so low, IMO. They are great, but there is no room for growth. Their customers are revolving, not repeat. Most brands, as a person's life changes, they can upgrade to the next rung. So far, there is only one Mini. You may replace it with another Mini, but I'd guess many people either want something different, or need something different. Still a great car though.

same reason Scion is there, I presume. These are brands do not seem designed to have repeat business. In their cases, the ranking seems unimportant. For others, its a problem.

i appreciate bleek's comments. nice to see another REAL toy/lex fan on this site. As I am sure you are aware S4, there are few left. Where for art thou, Will? (sorry, teaching Shakespeare this semester.)

We toy/lex fans cant make any comments without being jumped on, and there are so many negative articles eating up our time as we endeavour to set the record straight. It takes a lot outta you, doncha think. So if any posts sound a little bitter or defensive, I am sure u can cut some slack, no?

Are you kidding, toyotamarc? I thought you had some semblance of intelligence...

He may be a "real" Toylex fan, but he takes fanboyism to the next level of extremity, and it is unendingly annoying.

"So if any posts sound a little bitter or defensive, I am sure u can cut some slack, no?"

BTW...

No, I simply can't. I have no tolerance for fanboys. Obviously, there are a good dozen Lexus fans left (Lexus_Admirer, Soarer, "Lexus," LexusKindaGuy, to name but a few), and some of them--i.e. you--offer comments that are much less biased and appreciative of the car world as a whole. Instead of propagandizing Toy/Lex at the expense of the Germans (bleek), why shouldn't he be more open? I would have a much deeper respect for his comments if this was true.

I just dont trust anyone with "lexus" in their names. I cant tell the real fans from the posers, who say things so outrageous, that it is clear that they really dont like Lexus and are german fans in disguise. (Again it may not be everyone with Lexus in their names, I just cant always tell them apart. Perhaps the ones you mentioned do not belng in that poser group.) I also think that if there are, as you say, about a dozen of us left, then we are VASTLY outnumbered. Now I will say no more in defense of other fans, they can speak for themselves. But I regualrly get attacked whether I am expressing a simple (no-fact basis) opinion, quote statistics, use correct logic to break down an argument, or even when I'm just trying to have a little flaming fun (a sin many of us are guilty of, 009 I'm talkin to u). So yeah, it gets a little frustrating, and I can imagine that others (on both sides, maybe) experience that same frustration sometimes also. Peace out.

Me neither. Had the 98 GS300 and while it might have been reliable (and not even so), it was too expensive to maintain, the dealer was horrid, and the driving dynamics sucked.

"4 of the 'above average' brands are japanese. 6 are NOT...bmw, mercedes, hyundai, chevrolet, ford, cadillac."

Since when are there only ten brands that are considered "above average?" And why the hell is Ford there???

Maybe in Europe... but here? Think again. Even Chevy is questionable. They have the Malibu and the trucks going for them, but there are still massive voids in their lineup, like the ancient Impala, unimpressive Cobalt, inefficient Colorado and no minivan.

But what about Porsche? Audi? VW? Mazda (I assume your four from Japan are Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Nissan)? Bentley? MINI? Hmm?

REASON for the high loyalty rate of toyota owners/buyers: they are simply the BEST PUT TOGETHER and MOST DURABLE vehicles made on the planet.

a friend still owns a 4Runnder she bought new in 1993. over 240,000 miles and still going strong.

another guy had toyota truck when i first met him nearly 30 years ago. 3 or 4 trucks later, he STILL drives a toyota. says they're all good for a minimum of 200,000 miles.

go over to the forum at CarTalk, and you'll find several more guys like this.

one guy ONLY buys toyotas that have at least 100,000 miles on the clock! they're bargains, and are STILL LESS THAN 1/2 worn out!

this is the HIDDEN RESERVIOR of toyota owners. some from this pool MAY occasionally buy a NEW toyota. but a goodly percentage never see a NEED to do so!

considering how long lived toyotas are, this RESERVE ARMY of owners is larger than almost all other brands! backing up the OTHER army of NEW toy buyers. (when toyotas FINALLY wear out, these guys wouldn't even consider other brands! this LONGEVITY explains toyota loyalty.)

this may also explain why toyota posts record sales month after month, even in DECLINING markets.
