Toyota in effect declared hybrid war Tuesday when it announced that its 2010 Prius gasoline-electric hybrid will have a starting price just $1,280 more than the Honda Insight.

Insight went on sale Mar. 24. Prius goes on sale late May.

Prius is bigger, faster, more fuel-efficient and has a broader array of options.

Prius fuel economy: 51 miles per gallon in town, 48 on the highway, 50 in combined driving.

1st off - the question was very clear: which one will win at the end? (But I understand where you're coming from since there was no German car mentioned.

2nd - Efficiency doesn't mean you will not have to replace any parts, it simply means that the cars are EFFICIENT.

In case you weren't aware, there are people that do care about the environment and don't necessarily need an M3 (open your mind a little)

My choice: The Prius.

I would never buy either, but I just don't think the Insight is as complete of a package as the Prius.

I agree with you on all but you last statement. I do not believe that the Insight is the better package and the reasoning being is that the Prius comes far better equipped and in some cases offers things that the Insight just doesn't. I do appreciate the fact that you gave BimmerMike pretty good explanations of your thoughts. I also am not interested in either of these cars but if I had to choose I actually get the Honda Civic Hybrid just because it gets the same if not better than the Insight and its better looking than both even though I think Civics are pretty ugly overall they look better than these called purpose built cars. Its also good to see someone post meaning things without cutting and pasting Google or insulting the other person.

Prius will sell more. It has the name recognition, offers the owner status (in its own way), offers more features, and has the mileage to back it all up.

Agreed: the new Prius has great improvements over the previous model. The new Insight is ultra-cheap with far less technology and safety features than the Prius, has rear drum brakes where the Prius has discs and doesn't even offer a sunroof. The new Prius is cool; it's grown up.

Bimmermike46 The Prius is one of the worlds best made cars even with the very minor quality issues beside that wasn't the question. You may not want to be seen in a Prius but, millions are making Toyota very rich buying and driving them not to mention the element of prestige that goes with owning one of these things. Answer to the question: The Prius will win hands down and not only because it's a Toyota.

Neither, the Other Automakes have vehicles on the drawing board that have superior MPG, Performance, and either more bang for the Buck with a premium fit and finish, in Hyundais case. Or a Patriotic following in GMs case. You guys know its true, most of the other Automakers played it safe to see if these Hybrids were going to be a fad like Diesel cars were in the late 1980s. Now they see theres a serious and fast growing marketplace, and they are getting ready to play hard ball. In 3 years The Prius and Insight will be left behind, By: Hyundai, Ford, GM, VW, Lincoln, etc..... and you guys know it.

Not just Hybrid Powertrains, but theres enough Hyundai 1.6L 54 MPG Gamma engines, enough 1.2L GM Ecotecs about to hit US shores to drive Toyota and Honda bonkers.

Ford can easily add there 1.4L Fiesta motor to driv ethem crazy. Then again, these same makes, Hyundai, Ford, and GM have B-segment Hybrid Hacthbacks with the room of a C-segment in the testing stages already. Honda and Toyota had a nice run at it, but its time for the others to come and play hardball. That only makes competition better for everybody by the way. Who knows, this could force Honda to make a $14,000 Honda Fit Hybrid that gets 100MPG city mileage, 125MPG highway?

These guys have the chance of actually making a super high mileage ultra low cost Hybrid that doesnt look weird as well. I dont care if people know I drive a Hybrid, I just want a Hybrid. Not some Weird looking overpriced BS like Honda or Toyota, or some full sized Baby Boomer Sedan like the Camry or a used Accord Hybrid, or some overbloated whale truck or car Like a Fusion or a Tahoe.

However, unlike the Toyota Appliance. I do have to admit, the Honda has more character. I seen one of these things in person. Its a shame they put those stupid ancient door handles on it though. What were they scared that some decent body flush door handles would make the car cost $24,000 or something? Yeah thats it, maybe the Modern door handles on the Prius make it cost that much yeah!!!!?? Lmao what a Phucking joke!!!!

Thats the point of technology cost transfer guys. As the Tech becomes more available its supposed to get cheaper, not stay nearly the same price as the last generation tech. Toyota must have missed out on the days when a 1 MB computer cost $2500, and now wonders why a 35 cent CD RW has that much capacity for space.

Technology does get cheaper, that's why hybrids are more affordable. Why don't you ask the Germans why diesels are getting more expensive?

You have to give up so much for these two putt putt vehicles. The new Lexus HS250h that is coming this fall will have more power, more room, more evrything that you want in a Hybrid that you dont get with the Honda and the Toyota. Lexus is even giving you a good fuel rating (tbd) with the use of regular gasoline, not premium. Clearly lexus is putting luxury in this HS250h, which puts it way over the top on the others. Lexus wins....hands down.

how many gran sports will sell? IF they're lucky, and gm hasn't gone down the tubes, maybe a few hundred.

both the Prius AND the Insight will sell in the tens of thousands. people DO care AND BUY these cars.

The KIA Soul Hybrid will be using the same engine as the Accent Hybrid. 48 MPG they say, for the Soul Hybrid, Higher for the Accent Hybrid.

Thats better than the Insight. I just think its silly that they have these competitions before everybody else got to the gate. About as silly as those WRX vs EVO competitions a couple of years ago. Which was just really an undercover Hyundai(Mitsubishi) VS Toyota(Subaru) competition.

XYZZ, but whos going to buy these today. We are in a psychological mini depression, where nobody wants to shop if they dont have to. The cars I talk about will be on the streets in 2011. By then this mini depression or Great Recession, or whatever you want to call it will be long over. Also, the cars I talk about will overshadow the Insight. In 2 years, unless Honda gets a Plug in system, and does something about those doors, people will be saying "Insight, What!!!???"

just because we're in a recession/depression does NOT mean ALL car sales drop to zero until there is a recovery. even a 30-40% drop still represents tens of thousands of sales. the tougher sales environment means shoppers will be more demanding.

and they will likely REMAIN demanding for as long as its more a buyers' than a sellers' market.

even when there is a recovery, it will still take time for sales to ramp up, ESPECIALLY for brand new models. this is true even in normal times, unless a new model strikes a chord and makes a sales 'home run.' and even this is still dependent on dealers having enuff models in stock.

i bought the then brand new ford focus in late 1999. it was almost a whole YEAR before i began to see a FEW others on the street. and the first few fellow 'owners' i talked to were just driving rentals! and it's not like i'm in a small hick town; pop. is about 70,000.

1999 was a "kind of tough" sales environment as well XYZZ. Of course nothing as bad as today, but quite a few people lost their cars that year to repossession though.

First time Honda buyers "test drive"both Toyota and Honda before they come to a final decsision.They end up buyind Honda because of handling,driveability and room.Honda will win.
