Why Are The German Big Guns MIA in The Motorist Choice Awards?

General Motors and Toyota raked in most of the accolades as Intellichoice.com and AutoPacific joined forces to release the 2007 Motorist Choice Awards.

Of the 25 vehicle segments, Toyota units were named the winner in eight different categories. The nameplate's haul of honors included the top overall winner — the Lexus LS. Other Toyota vehicles on the awards' list were the Tacoma, FJ Cruiser, Avalon, 4Runner and Lexus IS and SC and Scion tC.

GM claimed the top spot in five vehicle segments. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was tapped as best in both light-duty and heavy-duty pickup categories, while the GMC Yukon XL rose to the top among SUVs and crossovers. Chevrolet's HHR also led the compact crossover SUV segment.

Special notice was given to GM's other honoree, the Cadillac DTS, which topped the listing for large luxury cars.

"Those who monitor the industry closely are probably not surprised by the performance of the Cadillac DTS," explained George Peterson, president of AutoPacific.

"Across all segments, the DTS came in a close second to the overall winner Lexus LS, and it was the top ranked vehicle overall in AutoPacific's recently announced Vehicle Satisfaction Awards. It's a car that can definitely challenge the other elite brands," Peterson continued.

The top-performing minivan award went to the Honda Odyssey, which was one of four honors for the nameplate. Other Honda vehicles that topped a segment were the Fit among economy cars, the CR-V among midsize crossover SUVs, and the Acura MDX among luxury crossover SUVs.

Nissan was right behind Honda with three award-winning vehicles. Its honors included the Maxima among luxury midsize cars, the Altima among premium midsize cars and the Murano among midsize crossover SUVs.

Volkswagen was the only other OEM with more than one vehicle on the awards list. VW units honored were the GTI in the image compact car segment and the Jetta in the midsize car segment.

While the report listed only one vehicle per segment, Peterson noted a host of other vehicles that scored quite well in the award study. Those units included the Lexus GS, RX, Lincoln Town Car, Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class, GL450, Acura RL, BMW 5-Series, 7-Series and Hyundai Azera.

Officials said the Motorist Choice Awards recognized vehicles that generated the highest customer satisfaction while having the lowest cost of ownership. AutoPacific explained that it took its owner satisfaction data and combined it with Intellichoice's cost of ownership ratings to create the awards list.

just the fact that the Nissan altima and murano are listed in the premium car and truck segment is enough for me. How is the nissan maxima with the fake wood and aluminum winner of the luxury car segment. Better yet, Cadillac DTS? huh? Luxury car winner ... I agree how is the Lexus SC430 sporty? lmao ....

what category would the SC fall into then????

luxury coupe???!?!?!??!!?

altho it is VERY outdated, the SC is a sports car and a damn reliable won which is why (I'm assuming) it won the award and also why there are no BEEMERS or MBs on the list

Well, when ppl buy cars they don't look at these reports and go buy it!. Thats 1 of the reason why people buy more SL class than Lexus SC..

Now now Agent009,

Wouldn't a more appropriate attention-getting headline have been:

"Germans M-I-A in Motorist Choice Awards?"

So we could strike up a debate about the decline of the German automobile industry? I thought you considered yourself "fair?" ;)

I don't want or need everyone to agree with me, for I can stand by my opinions on my own. You "don't agree with this article" because European brands didn't dominate. There's nothing particularly wrong with that, for we cannot help what we like, but just know that it makes you biased, therefore your comments are just as irrelevant as this article, if not more.

Your conclusion is invalid and dead wrong because it was based on your own opinion not mine.
If you were a half decent person you would have asked me WHY I think this article is crap, and then you would have had something to criticize.

Shocking! I apologize if it would have differed from that, however I doubt that it would have.

Hating automotive brands based off of their customer and fanbase is a bit immature, but even I'm not above it. Maybe now all the Euro-fans hating Lexus 'cause of lil' ol' me can now understand why there are people in the world that don't like many European brands due to their incessantly arrogant and often belligerent fans?

Will_- I'm not sure if the arrogance is limited to just the Euroboys. I see a lot of name calling based solely on your allegiance to a marque.

The ones how ever that are typically the most vocal are those that probably lack the confidence in the own decisions.

Having been lucky enough to have owned a least experience ownership of many different marques. I realize the strong points of most of them and can safely assume that NONE are free of their own vices.

Blindly following a brand is a foolish proposition, however many do gladly do it.

Does the story of the Pied Piper sound familiar?

Why does everyone assume that I'm only a fan of Lexus? Most of my comments don't even mention anything about Lexus. My family has owned many German cars for years, ever since I first learned to drive in a BMW. I personally have owned a Mercedes and even a couple Chryslers since I went on my own and had my own family. Thinking about purchasing an Audi as well as a Lexus in the near future. Apparently I haven't spilled my life-story and family history enough for people to realize this, but I've said it all before.

Currently, I do own two Lexus, and as someone who does, I feel that I am qualified to add flavor in this thick and spicy mix of anti-Japanese soup called AutoSpies.com.

since when is the Nissan Maxima a better car than the G35, IS350, ES350, BMW 3-series, Mercedes C-class, Audi A4 .... This list kills me. I rub my eyes just to make sure of what I am seeing. Better yet how does the Cadillac DTS a luxury car winner? Nissan Altima and murano beat out the cars named above and others..... altima and the fake wood with generic plastics, of course that is much better than the real thing. Who did they do research with?

I agree with most of this except the Chevrolet HRR, Scion Tc, Lexus SC, Nissan Murano, and Cadillac DTS.

Replace with: Rav-4, Civic Si, M-B SL, X5/ML/FX and VW Phaeton (since the category is luxury, not premium).

the primary criteria for this award are 'cost of ownership' and 'customer satifaction.'

european cars are generally far more expensive to service, fuel and insure. they will never win these kinds of awards. but then, most luxury buyers don't use maintenance cost as primary criteria.

Too narrow this survey, a bunch of bull. It is based on autopacifics client participation. Meaning if you are not on their site or registered, u didn't have a say. Just one more useless lists that are out there.

"The Motorist Choice Awards were designed by AutoPacific and IntelliChoice.com to recognize the vehicles that delivered both the highest customer satisfaction and the lowest cost of ownership. The awards take AutoPacific's owner satisfaction data from new car and truck buyers and combine those data with IntelliChoice.com's rating methodology to create a new kind of award that speaks to both the hearts and wallets of car buyers." Hearts and wallets of AutoPacific's registered participants that is... BLAH

Hmmm.. does AutoPACIFIC signal any type of BIAS towards Japanese?!?!

The Japanese and Americans clearly benchmark and target the German brands, thus they have the motivation to unite against them.

Give me a more objective and well balanced group of journalists and then I'll believe it.

Last I checked there were no Americans or even Japanese in the European "Choice" Awards. Audi/BMW and MB Dominated most categories.

If you look at some of the vehicles that DID make it onto this list, I can't imagine many BMW/MB/Audi fans being all that upset about not being on it. I mean, the DTS was not only a segment winner but almost came in first place overall -- that tells me all I need to know about the list right there. Maybe I'll think differently about it when I'm 80 and living in Fort Lauderdale like the people who apparently did all the voting.

Aspirational Luxury Car: Lexus IS
Premium Mid-Size Car: Nissan Altima

WTF?!

Could these categories be any more confusing?

Nissan is a "premium" brand now? Nissan is a mainstream brand and Lexus is a premium brand, hence the premium on a Lexus IS over an Altima! Who made this survey, Tyrone Biggums, your neighbourhood crack-fiend? He doesn't know much about cars, does he?

After reading through the websites of the promoters, one has to wonder where they get the "motorists" who contribute to the "awards" being offered. Of course, that goes hand in hand with any survey. I happen to read VehicleVoice news all the time, and it's cool, but I think they've misjudged how to deliver surveys. And, perhaps that relates to who responds to awards inquiries as well!

How does a company come up with a good survey or awards program? We all have our opinions, so what would make us want to share them? I ask the question as it seems that everyone here has an opinion to share.

BTW, I agree that the motorist choice awards are bizarre at best. Very odd.
