Why Did You Buy Your Last Car? The Reasons and the Motivation
We all buy cars for different reasons. Some us for the freedom and passion driving invokes. Or maybe the luxury you surround yourself with just gives you a sanctuary like none other.

For others it may be just the ulitarian transportation the automobile provides (does it seat seven?). Still others may be driven by intangible aspects, perceived luxury, sportiness, a nameplate or simply keeping up with the Jones’ down the street.

So we have a few questions for you:

1. What motivated you to buy your last car?

Was it necessity? Was it the latest model you just had to have? Perhaps your significant other told you this was what you were going to drive, screw the two seater?

2. Tell us what else you considered, and how you arrived at your decision. Was it price, value, amenities, or reputation?

3. Lastly, was your choice the best one you could have made? Do you wish now that you had paid less attention to that cute receptionist and more to the details?

Now be honest here.

I’ll give you fair warning if you just say “I bought it because it was a Peugeot and they rock”, I’ll delete your comment. We don’t want fan boy comments only the facts straight and simple.

I bought a 535i, because I enjoy BMW's. I thought the 535i was the best bang for the dollar. For me, it is never about price, it is about how a car drives. My car is equipped with a Sports Package w/ the new adaptive paddle shift transmission, hd radio, sat radio, cold weather package. I love my car. It is my 6th BMW I have owned and the best one I have owned.

I bought my VW Lupo because I needed a car that was cheap to insure, cheap to run, easy to park and maneuver, was safe, cheap to buy in the first place (I bought used), and I didn't care hugely about interior space.
I liked it over the competition (ie Yaris or Clio or Corsa) because it had a better badge, had a good interior and used high quality materials throughout.

I believe my choice was the best, because the Yaris I saw I really didn't like, and if I had a Clio, it would have been older and less reliable.

What motivated me to buy my IS 350 was the design of the car. It was fast, sporty, and luxurious. Plus, the car picks the owner and I feel a bond between me and my IS. Plus, it's been a great car. I've been more than impressed with Lexus which is why I'm a loyal fan.

i chose my GS300 about 15 months ago due to satisfaction from pervious Lexus vehicles and comparisons of the other vehicles in the same class.

the GS300 won me over from the 530 and e-class. (back in 2006) i purchased the GS fully loaded with all options for about $45k. between price and overall liking of the new GS, i knew the 530 or the E-class couldnt compare. some enjoy the more sportiness of the BMW and MB, but I am much mroe grown and require the comfort more than anything else. with age came wisdom.

the BMW was fun to drive and all but the interior was nothing compared to the GS and just felt bland. an knowing myself, i would get tired of sportiness and for 50k+ i expected more effort on the interior than what was given. the MB is just ridculously overpriced, prestige or not. my money is important when purchasing such an expensive vehicle and the MB couldnt deliver it. in all i enjoyed the drivability of the Lexus more so than the BMW and the MB. also I couldnt get a 530i with the same package for under $52k.

i am overly happy with my purchase...the car hasnt given me one issue to date (knock on wood). i am averaging about 26mpg on the vehicle and only have about 9k miles currently.

First, I buy cars based entirely on the driving experience and quality feel and not on a preconceived idea about a car brand. I NEVER rule out a car because of its badge or its heritage. I ALWAYS test drive every single car in the segment I'm interested in. I want what is best out there, so I don't subscribe to a certain brand and buy their cars because its my favorite brand(I simply don't have an absolute favorite). I buy what I think is the best car on the market at that point in time(of course-in my price range).
I chose to buy a 335i sedan simply because I thought nothing else in the segment comes even close to this car when it comes to driving experience, and because the price I paid is ridiculously low for what this car offers. I ordered the car with only the sport package since I considered the other options useless(they don't improve in any way the driving experience), and it cost me ONLY $38.5K!!! Would I make the same choice again ..You bet...again, and again and ...again.

Traded in my 2004 BMW 330i ZHP off lease, and was so shocked at how good the 335i sedan was that I ordered a 335i coupe without even driving one. I was given a fantastic lease deal and have always been impressed with BMW customer service. This is my 3rd BMW and I plan on sticking with the brand due to the fact that BMW excels in all areas. The cars perform amazingly, they hold up extremely well over the years, they hold their value, theyre very reliable compared to the other germans, and theyre beautiful pieces of machinery inside and out. You become one with your BMW.

Also, the free maintenance makes the purchase price seem justified. My 335i coupe was $52,000 and worth every penny. All my BMW's have been fantastic to own and my satisfaction with them as a brand keeps increasing.

Bought a 2003 530i Sport with a stickshift (38000k mi.) in 8/06. My wife has a new commute and wanted a more current car due the longer and more dangerous route (had a 95 525i with 220,000). Took quite a while to find a stickshift in an acceptable color (not black , silver or grey). Always try to let some else get the depreciation on the new car. Even though the 135i with a M sport package is looking really good.

Secton 179 tax write off. Actually, I buy a new car ever year.

The last reason was my wife got pregnant and we wanted the safest wagon there was on the market so the next day I bought her a Saab.

I bought my 2006 Honda Civic LX new in March of '06 and I could not be any happier. I had a 1984 VW Jetta MK1 with only 49000 miles on it, but I wanted something new. I had to have a car that was reliable, good on gas, and fun to drive. I was very impressed with the 2006. The styling is very futuristic and modern. The interior is a plus for me, because it is cohesive with the exterior. Honda did its homework with this car. It only has 140hp, but my previous car only had 79hp. So basically, I doubled the hp. Plus I put on a Injen CAI. It may not bump up the hp that much, but it sure sounds good.

I don't know why you were deboosted for saying what car you drive.

To me this posting shouldn't have any de-boostings if your answering the titles question honestly.

Along with that I'd like to say yours is one of the the more believeable on this posting [other than Rupert who we know is euro and more than likly does own a Lupo (fyi, good choice for over there)]. Not to discredit everyone who does own a BMW (I used too), MB Lexus or Saab however I don't believe everyone is being honest here...shocking I know. If this many people own BMW,MB and high end Japanese cars, well then I must be in the wrong job. And aviation careers pay pretty decently here in DC.

I might as well state that I just picked up Veyron along with a Rolls for my wife. And if anyone believes that I have a bridge in the salt flats I'd like to sell them.

However, I will say you should have kept the MK I. Great car.

....Oh and to actually answer the question 1 month ago I bought my wife a CX-7, because we have a child and need to hual crap, I like the safety of AWD especially for my wife when she drives, it has a turbo charged 4 cylinder and can actually go around a corner without massive body roll, it looks cool in comparison to it direct competitors and... I refuse to drive a minivan. I had to drive one when I was in high school years ago along with a "Griswald mobile" (and others) and will never do so again. It will kill me but I don't want to be the 'dorky daddy' for my daughter, everyone knows the guy who shows up in a car that embarass their kid...I had to live through that and my daughter will not. Rant.

Spectator -

I saw a black CX-7 on the highway the other day and thought it really looked awesome from the back. The RX-8 style wheel arches really set it apart (plus its got a great engine, I was curious how it was gonna haul that SUV though).

I might as well finish my post now. I bought my car because there was no combination of performance, reliability and creature comforts for the price. Subjectively, I liked the styling over the only other car at this price point w/ similar performance, the WRX. I have a Mazdaspeed3. I only wish it had heated seats and AWD, because I live in New England. One of the biggest reasons I bought it was because I had a regular Mazda3 and they gave me a killer trade in (well over retail book!).

I cant afford most of the cars that are topic of conversation on this site, but at 23 years of age, I'm ok with that.

I bought my is350 in feb 2007. Everytime I would see one on the street, it just looked like my type of car. I always loved the exterior and when I sat inside, the nav touch screen and the leather had me sold. i took it for a test drive and i was impressed by the acceleration. I live in Miami so, the ventilated seats are great for hot summer days. Honestly, my other two options were the 335i and the g35 sedan. I gotta say that I really liked the way the 335i drove but I really disliked the interior. The g35 sedan didnt compare to the 335i or the is350 imo. I recently ordered the isf in obsidian (changed it from granite mica). I like my 350 so much that im going to keep both. One thing that i didnt mention is the reliability of toyota and that was another main reason I chose the is. it was something that I didnt really have to think or worry about.

Fast (relatively), Safe, Reliable and good Resale.

I purchased a Forester XT because I initially wanted a GTI, my wife wanted a 4 door (prior to the 4 door GTI's exhistence). We both wanted a manual trans. While looking at possible choices, we stumbled into the Subaru dealer, found a Forester Turbo with a manual, appreciated the gigantic moonroof. On road, off road, cargo, solo, it is the jack of all trades. It doesn't handle or look as good as the GTI, but does everything else I need better. GTI is still the baseline vehicle for my needs.

I leased the G37 last month. Since my 2001 325Ci was aging and out of warranty, I wanted something new. It had to be something different(no complaints with BMW), affordable, very sporty, and lots of horsepower.

Other cars I was interested in were the S5, 335i, and C350. S5 and 335i were a bit over my budget with non negotiable deals, and C350 did not have +300HP.

At this point in time, G37 was my best choice still. Chances of me ever getting another Japanese sports car that I can trully appreciate is rare, so this was the best choice at the right time while not going over my budget.

In Feb 06 i needed a care because my parents 11 year old Lumina was a joke and full of unnecessary problems. So I was looking at all the cars under $30,000 because it hardly makes sense to have a car over that price with the horrible roads unless its like a Range Rover or a Hummer etc. I looked at everything from the Hyundai Sonata to the Toyota Camry and I was simply not finding what I wanted. Ford never really came into my mind until one day a friend came by my business to buy something and he works for Caribbean Auto Sales which sells all vehicles under Ford and also VW's. He told me about the new Fusion and I went to check it out. As soon as i saw the car I was hooked, the car looked great and also drove great too. The point was either buy the Toyota Camry I4 for $28,000 which is a really boring to drive and look at or get a Ford Fusion V6 for $23,500 and keep the extra money in my pocket. And I went for the Fusion it was simply the best deal and also since being the first person to actually get one on the island every person on the road kept staring at the car at point that even in a parking lot there were 2 or 3 ppl looking at the car. The only bad thing is the interior thats all i find everything else to be great even though i wished i had some of the features that the new ones have. All my friends and family members really like the car and the service at the dealership is absolutely great compared to the others.

I can't find the deboosting entry but note from your entry above that tax writeoffs allow you to get a new car every year. I used to do the same on a 2-year basis and never had to replace the tires. I was leasing because lease arrangements in Canada are even better tax avoidances than taking capital cost allowance on a purchase vehicle.

I purchased my leased 04 Audi A4 last month, if that counts as a buy, because I love Audi. Otherwise, the last car I purchased was a 2007 GT3 last in February, because I had to have one. Thought I was special with the GT3, until I went down to Rennsport this past weekend.

At first sight it was horribly under preserved, SO i bought it just to clean it up a bit, and rep one of audi's timeless body styles, It was a 93.

I leased an A6 Quattro because, at 0.96% lease rate, it was like free money and, on top of that, all scheduled maintenance was included in a Canada-only marketing program. It's a 4-year lease and all I do is drive it -- Audi takes care of the rest. Of course Audi is still screwing Canadians by charging much more than U.S. prices even though our currency is way above par with the greenback now.

I bought a 740Li when they first came out here (2005)to replace my 735Li (2002). I was very happy with the 7 Series so I thought I might see what he new one can do. I bought a new X5 earlier this year but sold it to my cousin recently. I'm deciding between an S65 AMG or a Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged. Even though it seems easy, it is hard. The BMW 7 Series is sporty and executive, so it suits me all the time.

Interesting how many BMW owners on this site right now. definitely goes in waves, seems like it was Audispies for a while. Lexus fans were always outnumbered (despite all the faux ones out there...u know who u are...) the domestic lovers seem to all hang out on Autoblog. No judgment here (today), just an observation.

I, as most know by now, own a Prius. Bought it for the lowered environmental impact, style, practicality and luxury features. At a great price, too.

Our family leased an 07 DTS for practical reasons. I, at 25, take care of 3 disabled people and getting them in anything smaller is not easy. I was impressed with the standard technology (XM, bi-xenons, led interior lighting, led mirrors, tails and 3rd brakelight - VERY BRIGHT) It has a smooth ride and the 275hp Northstar V8 is the most efficient in it's class (23city/29hwy). The standard iPod jack keeps me entertained while I limo the folks around (nicely tinted as well for comfort.

Quality, speed, handling, styling, technology.

I got into a 335i sedan with premium package, cold weather package, sport package, navigation, auto with paddle shifters, satellite radio, comfort access. Added 19" CSL wheels, tinted windows, black line tail lights.
I did drive the IS350, G35, Audi A4 and didnt want a MB because my friend had a C350. I fell in love with the BMW. I was coming out of a 2006 330i sedan. I had a buyer for mine who just wanted and bought me out of it. I ran back to BMW after driving the other cars because there is nothing like a BMW. Once you drive a BMW for a little bit, you cant let go. It is like crack! It appeals to all of my senses. I will never buy another brand besides BMW in a car. Truck is a different story.
The heated seats are my girlfriends favorite part of the car. There is nothing I would change about this BMW. It is worth every penny.

1. My daily driver, the LS was paid for; just wanted something new.

2. Considered an LS460, an S550, an S600, and an A8L all based of my basic criteria of a large-enough executive car for semi-long weekend trips as well as chauffeuring co-workers and associates.

3. The LS600hL I drove off the lot in was the best decision for me, in relation to both my needs and desires in a car in the segment I was interested in. It's a supremely-built, uber-luxurious ride with a reputation for high-quality and reliability.

I know someone will attack this comment, for the LS600h has been one of the most controversial cars on this website for sometime now.

My car is an alpine white BMW X5 E70 4.8, with the aero-kit, full options. Price is about $95K American.

I chose it because I wanted a very sporty SUV that was practical, handled well, looked good, and would take me anywhere without worrying about the buttom touching the ground. It was really my only option. The Cayenne is too ugly, the RR unreliable, and the GL way more expensive, at least in here.

So far Ive been extremely happy with the car. It drives well, best looking imo, and the interior feels very welcoming. The power is good, and the response is amazing for an SUV. ( this coming from a previous M5 E60 owner ). I love it.

On December 9, 2006, I wanted a Lexus IS350. I test drove a lot of cars, but ended up with a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid for one big reason -- driving solo in the carpool lane appealed to me more.

Fully loaded, the IS has almost every goodie I would want in a car, but I wanted a shorter commute time more. I was tired of the 30-mile morning commute taking 2 hours. I test-drove a Prius and hated it -- felt like I was driving a baby bus. Besides, it had NO front seat legroom for me and the power was a no-show. I've owned 9 Hondas, and loved them all, but I did not want another front-drive car.

I'll post specific hates and loves about this car in the reviews section.

Soon after buying the Civic, California returned my application for the carpool lane stickers. The program for solo hybrid drivers in the carpool lane reached its limit of 85,000 permits issued. However, I now drive 80 miles one way to LA, so having the Civic is OK (38 mpg the way I drive).

I drove an 6-spd E46 M3 Coupe everday for 4 years. The warranty expired, the car was too uncomfortable in stop-n-go traffic and I couldn’t drive 5 minutes without running into another one. Also, I wasn’t inspired to spend money to maintain it….especially with the prospect of the new V8 looming. The last M3 straight-six was a great car, almost invincible if you have open road in front of you, but I WANTED an upgrade --- not so much in pure performance, more comfort without sacrificing the need for speed.

I considered: V8 M3, 7-series, E63 AMG, S550 4MATIC, 911 Carrera 4S.

Ultimately the BMW dealer gave me a good enough trade-in for my M3, along with a price on a brand new alpine white/black M5 I couldn’t refuse.

The 750Li was luxurious, capable, practical, but ultimately lacking for the performance-crazed enthusiast, not to mention its somewhat odd exterior proportions. The Carrera 4S was great-looking, charismatic, a spectacular drive, but with just 2 adult-sized seats, and luggage space slightly larger than a suitcase, it was just too impractical. The S550 is some kind of wonderful, no major weaknesses, except I couldn’t strike a deal with the Benz dealer. I couldn’t get my hands on an E63, but I drove the E55, and while the supercharged V8 has bone-crushing acceleration, the steering just felt too numb compared to the M cars.

Before I started the process, I had assumed all along I’d probably end up with the new V8 M3. But, I realized I didn’t want to have to wait too long for the direct-shift tranny (a MUST for me), the usual waiting list in the M-mad crowd, plus the fact that the price was getting up there.

For just a few pennies more :), the M5 was probably gonna be more luxurious (compared to the new M3), more comfortable, more practical, not to mention that spectacular V10 (and it is every bit as good as advertised). Months after getting it, no regrets. OK, I wish they had engineered a larger gas tank.
