Not so many years ago if you drove a diesel it used to mean one of two things: either you were hard up, or a farmer. If you were a hard up farmer, well that just left the horse and cart, a mode of transport considered not dissimilar to a diesel – slow, messy and prone to smelly emissions.
However in 2005, one of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers – VW, announced that 60% of all its UK car sales that year had been diesel, a figure that will be exceeded in 2006. So what has caused this extraordinary turnaround, and change in public perception?
