Why did BMW change the Steptronic transmission?
It doesn't make sense
The Spies were out testing the latest X5 (Thanks to our friends at South Bay BMW in Redondo Beach) when we noticed something strange.
In our 2001 3-series, to upshift, you pushed the gearshift lever forward to upshift (in the steptronic mode) and pulled backward to downshift.
While we were driviving the 2003 X5, we realized after thinking we had downshifted, we had actually upshifted because the system has been reversed.
You now have to push foward when you want to downshift and pull backward to upshift.
Is it just us, or is that the dumbest system, ever devised by man?
If anyone knows the reason why, please email us at rumors@autospies.com.
We'd love to know what nutball reason they came up with, to totally confuse every driver, on the planet earth.
