Will Audi Release a Mini R8?
A "mini R8" with a mid-mounted 265Hp 2.0TFSI motor priced significantly lower than rival sports cars like the Porsche Cayman? Sounds like music to our ears. However, before you start checking out your bank account let us state that we’re talking about pure speculations here that sprung to life last year no thanks to the German auto press whose tendency of creating “pipe-dream” stories is renown. To our knowledge, Audi is planning several surprise debuts over the next few years, but there’s no (official or unofficial) confirmation of an Audi R4. Read Article

Would be cool if true, but I can't see that and the TT both being in the mix.

Yeah- Germany rules. Lexus/ToMoCo can't ever think about building a competition to this.

Sushimobiles suck.

Audi should just let the TT morph into one but make sure it has a better AWD system than that of the Subaru WRX STI. The STI is one of the few tiny rice burners that I admire. Audi came up with a winning style for the R8 and the cars looked great in real life when I saw a convoy of them heading in the opposite direction while driving in Nevada to get away from Alberta winter.

Agree 100%. The next-gen TT should morph into the R4. That would also leave space for Volkswagen 2+2 Coupe

I already saw one in L.A. a few weeks ago! On the road! No camo!

Others, on edmunds.com's CarSpace, have seen it, too. On the road, it was GORGEOUS. Pictures just don't do it justice! Truly blew me away.

It could've been an Audi preview car (for dealers?), but I doubt it... at least I hope not.

Yes, I saw the new R8 on Hope Street in downtown LA. It's silver. There was a receiption at Audi dealer about new TT and R8 three weeks ago. I didn't go. But they gave me invitation when I test drove the new TT.

I attended an Audi R8 Dealer Training event in Scottsdale Easter week. The R8 will start shipping this fall although the US will only get about 200 cars this year. And they're already spoken for. The R8 is amazing. We drove the cars at Firebird International and the traction in corners is unlike any car I've ever driven. The acceleration is also incredible - I'm sure the 420 advertised HP is conservative since the RS4 has the same engine (and rating) but without several performance enhancing modifications The R8 would feel right at home in daily driving. The magnetic suspension makes it very streetable. Right now there are about 20 R8's in the US. 12 of them were in Scottsdale. They're all "ZZZ VIN number" cars, so they'll be heading back to Germany. These can't be licensed in the U.S.

This looks hot... I could see this co-existing with the R8 AND the TT. Here's how:

R8- well beyond the TT and R4. They don't really need to re-adjust it at all; it has its market as a V8 Vantage/911 C4S competitor. And a very good one, at that!

TT- could use a *slight* adjustment if Audi wants it to be in the lineup with this car. They shouldn't make it super-sporty; just keep it with the Z4 and SLK, and the R4 won't be cross-shopped with it.

R4- definitely a Cayman S competitor. TT isn't quite "there," with its less-powerful engines and more easygoing demeanor. But the R4 could be Audi's less-expensive true sports car.

My $0.02.

Well said. I was wondering when somebody was going to point the large gap out.

Like I've said in a previous post, Audi should definitely build this car because there just isn't anything in the market other than the Cayman. You can kinda make a case for the M Z4 but I still think the Cayman (and potential R4) would run away with this segment because of superior handling. I guess Lotus is also in the Cayman price range but Lotus is really in a league of it's own.

Another note for our imagination's sake...what about a 3.2L or 4.2L TDI?
