Will Audi make a mistake if the A5 cabriolet does not have a retractable roof?
Here is a spy photo that is showing it with a canvas top...

Not at all, folding metal roofs are too heavy and bulky.

Please no more hard top convertibles....Im a ragtop man forever. Hard tops screw with the proportions of cars and murder trunk space. My CLK is a rag top and I wouldn't have it any other way...thats why I didn't get the SL...well and I needed 4 seats too...

They top material doesn't matter as long as you can still fit golf clubs in the trunk.

To me - the only car that a hardtop works on is the Mercedes SL. Other than that - they should all stay away from metal roofs.

Definitely agree with the proportions of the SL cabrio.
The VW Eos, Pontiac G6, Volvo C70 and even the "almighty" 3 series, all look awkward as hardtop cabrios.

I would pick a fabric roof over a metal one any day.

They should offer a metal roof to catch more sales. People in cold weather climates will shy away from ragtops. Metal roofs on the other hand, offer more versatility and usability in more conditions.

Cars with folding metal tops also always seem to require more "cut lines" to accomodate the way that the trunk has to work to fit the top...to me it ruins the look of an otherwise attracitve design...SL and Eos are perfect examples...way too many cut lines in bad places.

That is nothing more than a really bad photo shop! But Audi will most likely go with their canvas top anyway as they have almost perfected it to a stage where the advantages out weights those of an hardtop's.

no a good top will not stain
no a good top will take up less room and still be lighter
no a good ragtop will be quieter
if someone wants to cut your top they can still key your paint or smash your windos

The problem with Hard tops is that once folded you can kiss your trunk good bye. All the space is gone.
You can definitely tell which one is a 335 Coup and which one is a 335 Cab....the cut lines are not pretty and it adds so much freaking weight. The new Beemer Cab is 400 lbs heavier than the old one!!!!!!

A matter of what you like, a rag top tells the world you own a conv and some people like that, they also like black or tan as their top color not a solid body one color. Of course the metal adds security and strength and makes for a nicer experience with the top up, but on some cars the rag top just has to be there, I like the MX-5 hardtop but the rag top on the MX-5 also looks very nice in contrast. The CLK MBZ also looks good in cloth, but the SLK looks very sharp in metal just what you like either is very nice and very acceptable in todays car world.

Some new and forthcoming ragtops:
The new Rolls Royce convertible.
The forthcoming Mercedes Benz Ocean View convertible.
With company like that the new A5 convertible will do just fine. An expensive ragtop looks very classy.

I totally agree with BMW995, but I hate that photoshop! It lost the kink in the rear seat window area, and now it looks really weird. I guess Audi would have to do that to make the rag top though.
But I would much rather have the S5 coupe rather than a conv. because it's more discreet and inoffensive. That goes for all coupes as well.

RAGTOP...
I have a 328i convertible and there is zippo trunkspace with the top down. Its effectively a 3 seater in the summer because whatever would have been stowed in the trunk (beach chairs, lunch, etc) has to go in one of the back seats.
Some BMW engineer also had the lunatic idea to put a useless backseat center console which basically precludes another person from squeezing in next to the lunch/luggage, etc.
That's not to mention that the whole car rocks gently as the really heavy top gets stowed. I hope when my top mechanism gives up, its still during the warranty period. The top seems to be really, really, heavy and you feel it when it goes down.

I agree, I don't think that photoshop looks good, it looks quite bland as a convertible in that photo. I'll reserve full judgement til its released though. I think making it a softtop would certainly reduce weight and as Audi are on a huge drive to make their cars more driver oriented this would certainly aid in the handling department. I think the A4 softtop sold so well that Audi also probably doesn't want to mess with the formula.
