MUMBAI, India — Mahindra & Mahindra has launched an upgraded Scorpio in India called the M-Hawk, with an all-new 2.2-liter engine that puts out a healthy 120 horsepower. The Indian automaker had help in developing the new Scorpio from AVL, on the engine, and Lotus, for the suspension.

This new engine, known internally as the Eagle, has been branded the M-Hawk since both the Eagle and Hawk names have been registered elsewhere. It boasts four valves per cylinder and a host of other high-tech features. M&M is banking on this engine for its export models, including versions of the Scorpio utility vehicle and pickup that are slated for sale in the U.S. in late 2008.

Ride and handling specialist Lotus helped tweak the suspension, keeping the layout and design the same but changing damper settings and fine-tuning springs and linkages.

Lotus reportedly spent months testing in India to sort out the Scorpio's sloppy handling, the car's biggest weakness.
