Will Mercury Be The Latest Casuality For Ford?

After enduring years of speculation about the future of the Mercury brand, dealers are asking Ford Motor Co. for a straight answer to a simple question: Does Mercury have a future?

In February, members of the Lincoln Mercury National Dealer Council asked Ford executives to outline their strategy for Mercury. If it has a future, they want to see the products. If it does not, they want to know now so they can manage their business accordingly.

According to dealers, Ford agreed. The Dearborn automaker told them it would discuss the fate of Mercury at a dealer meeting that was then planned for April in Las Vegas. Company sources say no such commitment was made.

NO! NO! NO! I am a former Grand Marquis customer. Ford should have abolished the Crown Vic and sold Grand Marquis cars at the lower price of the Crown Vic. Ford's cost would have been almost the same and even lower by gaining economies of scale. The Lincoln is a derivative of the same vehicle and the LIncoln name should have been used for an extra special fancy Grand Marquis. Anyway, it's all academic for me as I just bought a nicely loaded Passat which has far superior seats to anything Ford ever had.

A Lincoln is nothing more than a Ford with a different logo and grill. Good riddance.

My only concern is for the Lincoln-Mercury dealers. Lincolns sell better than Mercurys, but I'm not so sure that they can survive with the Lincoln franchise alone. Perhaps consolidation of the Lincoln and Ford dealerships is the answer. That is what happened in my town. A Lincoln-Mercury dealership that had been in existence for more than 50 years closed its doors. A nearby Ford dealer bought the Lincoln-Mercury franchise. Now that dealer sells Fords, Mercurys and Lincolns in the same showroom. Talk about redundancy!

I don't think Mercury is going is going anywhere because even though its sales volume is small, it would rather difficult to recoup the loss. Also remember that those Mercury consumers aren't going to automatically move to another Ford brand. GM lost most of their Oldsmobile customers to Toyota and Honda.

.........I hope FORD itself. It'd be good to see it die. Not one truly amazing car in the last 3 years.

TehShibbs,
Truely amazing?
Depends on what you call amazing. During the late 80's to the mid 90's V6 SHO's were borderline amazing. Unfortunately there are not many good surviving V6 SHOs. The sound of that 3.0 dohc V6 at ~8,000 rpm was really something. If you didn't enjoy that car, you are not an enthusiast period (.)
