Will The BMW 1-Series Make Its PRESENCE Felt Against The Competition?
As I was reading through the blogs , I read a comment from a reader saying that the new 2008 BMW 1-Series didn't have any presence.
I chuckled to myself because my guess is that he has never seen one close up in person.
So I decided to do an informal test with YOU, our readers, to see if he is right or he needs to get out of his Hyundai more often and get some air.
I took the 1-Series around to the local dealers here in San Diego and photographed it next to a lot of the key competitors and some cars that aren't competitors, but just to see if it could hold its own against the elite.
The are also so really nice cameo shots of the car for those of you (like me) who can't get enough of this little pocket rocket.
Is it ever FUN to drive.
I didn't want to hand the keys back to the guys at BMW of San Diego!
So, does the new 1 have presence and does it stand tall against the competition.
We photograph and report.
You decide.

Side by side the G37, C, Porsche and IS looks much more aggressive and w/better stance. The 1 looks like a cartoon car from Cars or a cute sad bulldog :-)

The negative comments ring hollow to those of us who have spent time around and driving the 135i. It looks great in person and it has its own persona, unlike many cars these days. The 135i is sculpted and aggressive, plus manages to have more usable space for people and cargo than other cars people may cross shop. The emotional power of this car is tremendous, just look at the sheer quantity of nearly instaneous responses to this article!

Hey that's a great idea Lexus12,
Let's purchase a car based on what other people will think of it!
So I guess you are a consumer who's values lie in the artificial status of owning a car that everyone will like, rather than a personal feeling which may (shock horror) be more fulfilling as an ownership experience.
Let's forget about the 1-Series for a moment (I know, you didn't know that was possible on Autospies) and take a look at how shallow that comment was.
I for one don't care for the opinions of others when I buy a car, for me it is a deeply personal experience but I guess I'm just old-fashioned....

Matthew, looks are the first thing you see and first inpression means a lot. When you see it, its not impressive what so ever, I would keep looking until I stumble upon a 3 or any of those competitors above.

Matthew,
I understand exactly what you're saying. Unfortunately, we're surrounded by shallow people who base everything on looks. But if you're secure enough to get the type of vehicle you want -- damn what anyone else says -- then more power to you.

0to60 ... I think the car has more of an old school look to it. I like it alot and the drive is something short of spectacular. In regards to presence from looks then I would say the Mercedes C-class has it won hands down. I just dont like how it drives as compared to the 135. Therefore, since I have to live with my decision for 3 to 4 years, I will always go with what is the most fun. For me, the 135 is hands down the most fun I had in driving cars in the 13 years I have been with BMW & Mercedes. I currently own a 2006 330xi sedan and a 2008 535i. I would trade either car in order to get my hands on a 135i.

if you can only view this car as "the lowest bmw", it's time to stop pretending to be an auto enthusiast. POSER!!!
...just like the elise is the "lowest lotus"?
...just like the f430 is the "lowest ferrari"?

You don't like it because it the "lowest possible BMW"? That is the dumbest argument I've ever heard.

that's funny. like saying the cheapest rolex. lol.
even the smallest bmw still has the brand's hallmarks of great handling and a wonderful engine that make it a blast to drive.
what do you get in an IS250? or a C300?

dlin ... I work for BMW. I currently own a 2006 330xi and a 2008 535i. I have driven both the 335 coupe and 135 extensively. Without a doubt the 135 is a better drivers car. Actually there is nothing on the road that I would drive in that price category. The 135 I am getting will list out at just over $42k. it is an awesome, awesome car. If you have not had the chance to drive it, then you are missing out. absolute blst to drive

You don't get a BMW just for drive. You also want it to be practical.
IF all you care is driving, get a BOXTER or CAYMAN. No stock FR can match MR in turning.

Its ugly and way to small (on the outside)! Its obviously a chic car and I doubt it would hurt the competition. Maybe the 3 series a little but not other brands. And where is the pic of it next to the 3 series uptop? Isnt that its biggest competitor?

What makes it a chic (sic) car? Do you mean a "chick" car? Because of its dimensions? Do all the "chics" you know go around driving 300-hp cars?

LOL a "Chic" car? Yeah it is chic I guess.... but now if you mean a car women like by calling them "chicks" I don't see how. This BMW is small yes, because it was created to be small and more in line with how BMW used to be, smaller compacts that performed brilliantly. Because it is small it makes it more prone for women to buy? I doubt that. Besides, around here I have only seen men driving the first few I have seen on the road and I am in NYC.

top 10 chick cars (in no particular order):
1. cadillac escalade (every stripper drives one)
2. ford explorer
3. mitsubishi eclipse
4. vw (new) beetle
5. chevy cavalier
6. mini cooper (convertible only)
7. mercedes clk (convertible only)
8. lincoln navigator
9. hummer H2
10. lexus ES
...hmmm, no 1 series. this is a definitive list, you know.

when it comes to showing off a cars presence, design plays a big role. the 1 series look plain/ok than boring after a while. the other cars its being compared to in the pics look far better and that G37 looks real sweet btw. the porsche seems a bit random though. the pricing o the 1 doesnt help either

It's "too", not "to" and BTW the 135i is the best bang for the buck AND it has that BMW ride and refinement that you will not find anywhere near this price. BMW's are never the cheapest cars in their category, but they are usually the best. Not everyone will be able have the best of the best, that is just the nature of the marketplace.
