The difference between the X6 and the other two is that the X6 looks like crap and isnt very practical with that back end.

After spending considerable time in the FX I can tell you that there is nothing practical about it...poor storage and the worst back seats of any SAV.

Definitely form over function on that one.

The Range Rover Sport on the other hand works great all around(except for the terrible gas mileage)

I think the X6 front end looks aggressive and definitely interesting. Will wait until the final Pics to make Judgement...but I am very intrigued.

Excuse me but when exactly did the Range Rover ever loose in the performance, technology and reliability tests.
The Range Rover, as expensive as it is, is still the best offroad vehicle. In no way shape or form is the FX a better SAV, or whatever you wanna call them, than the LR RR.

Exactly. The X6 looks like an Aztek.

The FX and RR Sport have nothing to worry about.

"Are you the genious that takes his 90 thousand dollar UV (The S is missing becuase there is no sport here) offroading???"

I wouldn't even waste 5 thousand dollars on an suv or whatever they are referred to. But i have had the privilege of taking a Range Rover offroading and nothing compares. As far as looks go the X6 and FX can't compare. And these cars are not even in the same category.
one is meant to be more agile and hence will fall apart when offroading = FX
the other is not meant to race with on the streets = RR

I like the "X" shape in the front, but the rear is awful. Isn't X6 suppose to be bigger than X5 per naming? If that's the case how comes the shape of rear? Could it actually be called X4?

Anyway, nothing looks better than FX. With the introduction of EX the future FX should get bigger to the size of X5. Therefore X6, from the point of look or size, won't kill FX.

So far, not an Range Rover Sport killer to me.

I think the Range Rover sport appeals to a different market than the X6 will. Infiniti has a good following with the FX, evem in markets it is not sold people import them. The redesign should be shown soon, so everyone shall wait and see

the X6 does look hot.

and much like the FX and range rover sport it's more about looks and performance than actually hauling around lots of people and their gear.

it'll definitely compete with both very well. however, the infiniti will likely be a lot less expensive so i doubt there will be much cross shopping.

range rover sport will be core competition.

RRS and X6/FX45

These are two completely different class of vehicles.

RRS is a real offroader with hi/low-range transmission, center locking diffs and optional real locking diffs. It has cross link air-suspension for articulation. Real approach/departure angles and wading depth to ford in water. It also has real 7,700 lb towing capacity.

The X6/FX are hot-rod station wagons with AWD. Neither can go offroad except a few dirt path. Sure, they're faster on road and probably have better on-road dynamics because of their car-based unibody construction.

if the RRS did not have all that off-road hardware and did not have a body on frame truck chassis, it would have saved 800-1200 lbs off its curb weight and go very fast. However, as a Land Rover, it has to adhere to its heritage. A RRS without offroad cred is like a Ferrari with 4 doors.

Take your pick.
They tailor to different market segments.

Sure, a few will cross shop. Mostly poseurs.

the range rover is likely the better off-roader.
but not really relevant to most buyers.

these cars all cater to the exact same market segment: well to do people who live in major cities and their immediate suburbs. i'd say 95% of these cars will never leave pavement.

Speedmaster - I agree

CommonSense - I agree, except, the RRS is 'sport' to the Land Rover brand. It provides the best highway manners of the LR family. Although most of them end up in Louis Vuitton parking lots, I would take mine skiing/snowboarding and up the logging road to my cabin.

As far as this being an accurate comparison, think of this: Before the X6, the X5 was the FX's competition. And when the RRS sport was released, the question was posed: "do you still want that X5?" Now the X5 is out of the picture.

I think these trucks, *ahem*, 'SUVs' will have buyers with somewhat different personalities.

I'm cheering for the Infiniti. I want the Range Rover. The BMW will win the comparison tests.

All have good and bad points like everything else. Consumers buy these machine for their macho look, being a very low maintance funtual soccer type vehicle is not in the picture for these kinds of buyers. These crossover look good coming and going, the new BMW will have style and that name going for it, but in the long run all three bring a flare to the table and they all will continue to do fine in the market place.

The Range Rover appeals to image seekers more than the X6 will. The FX is more of a value option in the class. The X6 will slot in between them. The Rover will be more functional (off roading and interior space) the FX will most likely be sportier though less practical and the X will be right in the middle. I'm waiting to see the rear end of it though. The front grew on me more than the X5 did but I fear an Aztekian rear end. That scares me. BMW has made some off styling moves the last few years, lets see if they keep it up.

I think this is a stupid move for BMW, one that just spells "SELL-OUT" in my mind. Not only is the X6 awkard and ungainly next to the X5, but it will probably be impractical, will guzzle gas and still won't handle like a real BMW. A shame. BMW can't be everything to everyone.

I am with S4Cab on this one. BMW and every other mass production manufacturer is coming up with new niches all the while trying to keep up with ones created by competitors. "Come shop our cars because we offer everything for different families. What we have here is the 1-Series for young adults. Oh, you having children? Well come over here because we might have something for you. Would you be interested in the X3, X5 or our new X6? We really do not care about the environment. BMW just wants to join the party because we can make even more money. Yeah!" All this trying to increase and maximize profits is the world we live in.

EL34, BMW is doing just fine as is. They are, correct me if I'm wrong, the highest-profit mass-production luxury manufacturer in the world (Porsche is not mass-production). The X6 is just unnecessary and I hope it doesn't sell well, so they get rid of it.

CommonSense,

"And if you look at it from a practical point of view, YOUR BEYOND WRONG. You mention that the FXand X are poseur cars."

You misread what I wrote. I said the RRS vs FX45/X6 are two different class of vehicles. Only those who cross-shop the two segments are poseurs. Read it again.

RRS excels offroad and as a real S"Utility"V

X5/X6/X45 are hot-rod SAV/Station wagons with AWD.

I can tow with my RRS. I tow my FJ40 and soon to be Elise/Cayman. I can't do that with the X6/FX45.

Again, two different class of vehicles. If you want a fast wagon, get the FX/X series. I personally get a S4/RS4 Audi wagon or M5 station wagon if I wanted a fast "AWD" wagon.

Why didn't your friend just hire a snow plow? I think that the S4's other qualities are definitely worth its purchase over the FX. The FX45 is a hot car, for sure, but it's missing the refinement and extra engineering that makes the S4 Avant so interesting.

firstly you wouldnt compare fx to an X6. 2nd bmw owned range rover for a certain period of time. in that time they range rover had hydraulic problems and other electrical problems in there car. bmw fixed those issues, took some ideas from range rover and developed there own 4WD, then sold range rover IMO this is were bmw are better. they are able to make a better vehicle and have excelled from there. now range rover are owned by ford, and IMO range rover are going backwards from now on

The FX is plastic crossover competing with the Hyundai Veracruz and the Lexus RX, entry level luxo utes. The Range competes with the X5 4.8is and the Cayenne Turbo. Different dimension.

enough with the reliability bullshit.

per JD powers: over THREE years, land rovers have 3.98 problems per vehicle while lexus/buick have 1.45 per vehicle. all cars are reliable. period.

using your logic, if the land rover is in the shop every week, the lexus is in the shop every other week or so.

The X6 is a great idea the sercet to success is to offer a product that few rivals offer like the x3 or the 1 series coupe Mercedes has not had answer to the x3 for four years, the Infinti FX is the closest rival. Also BMW needs more profitable sales, the 1 series is not enough.

You guys forget one thing.

The RRS has a GVWR of 6,000lbs. Section 179 write-off baby.

As CommonSense said, "By the way people who make enough money to purchase these vehicles didnt make it by being stupid."
Thank You for the compliment.

I bought my RRS because I was able to write off $34,000 the first year in taxes. This year, I will write off 11,000. It will be written off in 3 years of ownership. Then to the next thing.

This is why depreciation is not an issue for me and many people. I'll trade it in within 3 years with 40,000 miles on the clock for a fullsize RR.
If I get $35,000 then so be it. Who cares. I got my money's worth.
I'm been checking the residuals and the RRS is holding up very good. '06s are still being traded-in at 53K. Not bad!!!

And since I use it for commercial reasons, I can park in the yellow zone. I cant see how I can convince DMV that the FX and X6 are commercial vehicle with a small boot/load capacity and insignificant towing.

And yes, people do take their $40-90K SUVs offroad. Just because someone of you are 'afraid' to get it scratch, I am not. I don't go on narrow trails.
In the 10 years of SUV ownership, I've never gotten serious "trail damage" Nothing that a light detail won't fix. Some of us don't go rock crawling but we sure do go the campgrounds, desert runs, and long style expeditions which the RR is suited for.

I know the FX does not meat Section 179 GVWR rules. I doubt the X6 will either.
