Will the next BMW 3-Series get this new diesel engine?
BMW has designed a new 2.0L turbodiesel engine that puts out an impressive 204hp and 400Nm of torque. Additional benefits over the 177hp outgoing motor is a wider power band, improved fuel economy and a lighter aluminum engine block. BMW made use of a variable twin turbo system, utilizing a small low inertia turbo that spools up almost instantly off idle combined with a larger unit at high rpm loads.

The end result is a smooth torque curve with 200Nm of twist coming from just 1200rpm and the 400Nm peak not far off at only 2000rpm. This should provide plenty of urge around town without the engine even having to break a sweat. BMW is yet to release fuel consumption figures, but it claims the new engine is more economic than the previous 2.0L diesel, which used just 4.9L/100km.

Hybrid is only efficient on stop and go urban driving, but not so on the freeway. Diesel is efficient on both types of driving.

The IS220d is a good choice in my opinion. I would much rather have the IS220d than a IS hybrid. To me, diesel is a proven technology that works. Hybrid is an unproven technology at this point in time. I'm not saying that hybrid is bad, but I'd rather have diesel. By the way, diesel is not necessary a fossil fuel, it's bio-generable.

But your statement "The Lexus IS220d is the only diesel to go for if you like planet Earth!" is just going to trigger another flame war.

trueno,
Diesels are only more efficient than gasoline in the city, but not by much. Most of its gains are from the highway. Hybrids are catching up in highway mileage, and are unmatched in the city. Once you bring emissions into the equation, its no contest.

Old-world mentality is hard to break unfortunately.
