World Premiere: Alfa Mi.To
With the Mi.To, Alfa Romeo wishes to offer a new generation of Alfa aficionados the most compact sports car ever. An up-to-date and innovative car, a name redolent of history. The name Mi.To has great evocative resonance for Alfa Romeo, since it was chosen as a sign of a deep-seated link between the past and future of the brand: between Milan, the city of design that brought the car’s style into being, and Turin, which will be responsible for its industrial production. A decision that highlights the brand’s strong desire to consolidate its Milanese roots. Read Article

I'd buy that as a nice little commuter car.

But most likely the USA won't see it because small premium compacts don't sell very well here.

Now here is a company that makes cars with style! GM should close its design dep and give the design wholly over to Alfa!

Yea, I read that too. But like anything with Alfa Romeo, I'll believe it when I see it. First, they said Alfa was coming stateside in 2006. Then they said 2007. Last year they said 2008. Well, it's now 2008 and I don't see them at all getting ready.

Plus, I don't think it would be wise to sell a small compact Alfa in the states. I read somewhere that the Fiat 500 might be sold under the same Alfa (basically Masarati) dealerships at a later time. That would make more sense. Like it ot not, most Americans aren't like Europeans and won't spend mucho bucks for a premium hatchback. This will probably offend the Mini owners out there but the Mini brand is not exactly a "premium" brand.

The car is FWD and based on Fiat's Grand Punto. However it's been tuned to provide Mini Cooper levels of handling. Mini is a small premium car and is selling quite well in the US JoeO. This car may be built in Mexico so Alfa can avoid the currency issue. Most likely the engine choices will be both gas and diesel for the US. The car will compete with Mini and well sell like hotcakes here in the US with gas soon to be $4.00 per gallon for regular.
